“Good....but could do better”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2014

We stayed at the Seaside Suites for two weeks over Christmas, returning on New Years eve. We booked through Thomsons but knowing that there is usually a long wait at the airport for the coaches to leave, we arranged our transfer with Canada Transfers and can highly recommend them - they were there waiting for us with chilled cans of Corona (1USD ea) and took us straight to the hotel. If travelling on the 787 then Premier is a must but also take a cushion as the seats are very hard.

Upon arrival we were welcomed with 'champagne', quickly checked-in and taken to our suite - we were pleasantly surprised to have been up-graded to a Premier Suite - these are more modern but a little soulless/characterless and could really be a room in any upmarket hotel. The rooms are clean and the mini bar re-stocked daily with 3 types are beer ( 2 local & Heineken), soft drinks and water. The standard of cleaning was excellent - after an initial hiccup. The 'Concierge's' were quite helpful.

The restaurants were all very good with tasty, well presented food and generally very good service - with the exception of one waiter in the 'Sandwicherie' who, when we asked for coffee with the lunch, pointed and said 'the coffee machine is over there'! The Asian and Italian were probably our favourites. The restaurants are also clean and well furnished with the exception of 'Arricife' where the chair seats are badly stained. The 'Gourmet Pub' has to be pre-booked (before 2:00pm) but there is no pre-booking required at the others and the wait - with a buzzer - was generally 15-20 mins so OK. One thing that did surprise us was that even though the resort calls itself 'Gourmet All Inclusive' steaks were extra - not really on for this class of resort.

All of the restaurants have a dress code for evening meals:

' 'Gentleman: Recommended: Long pants, collared shirts, casual shoes.
Permitted: Formal bermuda, dress sandals''

but don't worry as this is not adhered to unless denims shorts, round necked t-shirts and flip-flop sandals fit in to it. Karisma should either have a dress code and enforce it or not have one at all.

The main bar 'Guacamyas' should really be re-named 'The Football Bar' as football and, occasionally, American football & baseball is on continuously with the sound not turned off even when bands are playing. The seating in this bar is showing it's age and is not really comfortable. The main plus with this bar is that it serves 'amber' beer on draught which is very nice! There are 5 different beers on offer plus a range of branded spirits. Service is again very good.

The beach is white sand and clean/raked regularly. It is, however, covered in sun loungers and day beds packed very closely together. We found that you had to be on the beach by 7:15 to get a day bed. The resort appears to have grown too big with too many rooms for the size of it's beach. The bar service on the beach was, yet again, very good.

Whilst there you will get the 'opportunity' to go to a 'presentation' of the 'Exotic Travel Club'. You will probably be told that it will last about an hour and you will be offered various incentives. If you decide to go you will be asked to sign a form saying that you agree to a 90min presentation but this will turn in to 2hrs plus at least.

The resort also has WiFi but this is an extra cost - surprising for a resort of this class.

Bearing all of the above in mind, would we recommend this resort and Karisma hotels, well yes.

Back yesterday from another wonderful holiday this time over Christmas and New Year at the El Dorado Seaside Suites, Riviera Maya, Mexico (EDSS). This was our third time at this resort and the reason for coming here again was as it was going to be over Christmas and New Year we wanted to make sure we knew what to expect, and it did not disappoint. Firstly the resort has expanded since 2012 to include a new Premium Suite block and new swim-up rooms, a new Gourmet "Pub" (Restaurant - this is the only one you have to book a table for), watch out not to order too much here, the appetizer is a meal in itself, and a Theatre (called Piccadilly Circus) where the team put on shows, tribute acts, etc. In addition they have added a extra small Bar on the beach (to help out the hard working beach waitresses, Janet, Anna, Lucy to name a few) along with a new toilet block, all these additions are good news. The new premium suites are not to our particular taste as we prefer the older ocean front rooms, and at first appear to not really fit in with the rest of the resort, but that is just personal opinion, and we didn't look round them so cannot comment on the insides, although the pool area looked good with the new swim up rooms and its own bar area. Even though the resort has expanded, it has not detracted from the attention to detail with regards to the absolutely spotlessly clean and well kept resort beach and gardens, toilets and restaurants, they are still so well maintained to a high standard and beautiful. The restaurants (Mexican, Italian, Asian, International, Pub, Sandwich Café, Garden) are all still great, well presented and tasty food, lovely and attentive staff but not overly so. Dinner early say 7pm to 8pm is no problem, getting a table later on may require a slight wait, but no more than 10 to 15 minutes, and with the swing bars to wait with a cocktail, its not a problem. Again, they have invested in more beach loungers and beds and as you look at the beach the sea the right side towards the main bar is busier, the left side more quiet, so options to choose from. Fabulous outside BBQ each day, unless its rains when that moves inside, Everything from the usual burgers, hotdogs, to paella, other fish dishes, spicy pork, chicken, salads, sweets, cold drinks. Some of the other restaurants are available at lunchtime so there's plenty of choice and more in the evenings. Also, the personal concierge's are there to help or advise on anything you need so thanks to Alexandra, Raul and Marceleo. Would like to thank all the staff at EDSS for making our Christmas away so great (Mercedes, Brenda, Wilberth, Matteo to name a few again) and congratulations on the New Years Eve party on the beach, which made it our best new year ever. We had a room in "block" 30 (28, 29, 30 at quieter end of resort), kept clean and tidy by Rosario. The usual large canopied bed bigger than a king, so comfortable, big pillows, and the greatest air conditioning unit ever which was so required. Would also recommend the Thomason Airways Dreamliner Premium Class experience along with a taxi transfer rather than coach. Garcias El Dorado it was wonderful.

Room Tip: Ocean Front (not view due to palm trees) are in original part of hotel, looking from the sea, to the...

Not sure where should we start…with people or with the facilities. Every staff member & facilities has exceeded our expectations every single time. We simply couldn’t have asked for more. The overall experience was fantastic, we are going to cherish the time we spent at the resort for our lifetime.

We have had few other luxury holidays in the past, however one and the only thing which motivates us to give the number one rating to El Dorado Seaside Suites, is its people/staff. We come from an Asian background and used to think that Asian hospitality is the best. However after staying there for 8 nights, our views have changed. We have never seen a team enjoying their work so much, starting from the entertainment team (Lulu, Aldo, Cesar & Martin), Personal concierge (Angie), Restaurant staff (Antonio from Mia Casa, a lady in short hair style from the Pub Gourmet, middle aged male from Sandwitchery and many more), front desk staff, staff used to make our bed (specially the towel designs) and the Spa staff. We would also like to specially thank Thomson Travels (Lots of hugs to Sam) for organizing and managing everything for us in such a friendly though very professional manner. I still remember the sight when our return flight was delayed due to some technical fault; one of the Thomson lady staff was actually serving water to all the passenger waiting in the queue (even most premium airline’s first class lounges doesn’t provide such personalized service). Each one of these has contributed a lot to make our holiday so memorable. They were very successful in passing on their happiness and commitment about their work to our stay and the overall atmosphere. It’s very rare however since we are back from Mexico we are actually missing the place so much that both my wife & myself had few dreams about the time we spent there.

As far as facilities are concerned, resort designers haven’t left any chance to disappoint us. The restaurants were fabulous (I really liked the concept of having à la carte menu rather than Buffet), rooms were great and spacious, and overall layout is very efficient. We really loved the small bars in the swimming pools, swings in the lounge, a very long and beautiful pathway to the Spa, small details like changing the Christmas story behind the main reception on daily basis, the night shows & live DJ (though my wife used to dose off due to jet lag), various activities during the day time and the unlimited supply of everything (including the smiling faces of the staff members). We were actually amazed by the seating/relaxing options and their availability near the beach area (from sea beds to actual double beds, bean bags, and the list continues). Only one thing I wish can be improved is the main entrance from the highway. It doesn’t actually reflect the image/quality of the resort.

I am sure I can write pages and pages of praise about the El Dorado Seaside Suites and it would never be enough. Now whenever we will plan our next holiday we would surely want to visit other resorts of the same group. However I know for sure inside we would love to come to El Dorado Seaside Suites again and again. Finally big thanks for making our experience a lifetime sweet memory.

Room Tip: Though the premium rooms looks fantastic, however I like to recommend the beach view suits as there...

We travelled here on the Dreamliner cant say I was overly impressed,
we booked extra legroom seats but the width of the seats are very small.
The flight took over 10hrs which was a bit of a drag.
Got through customs pretty quickly but then had to wait an hour and a half for the coach
to leave we where exhausted.
Finally we arrive at the resort and couldnt wait to get into our rooms. We booked a premium
room and where allocated one on the 4th floor which was very spacious and had a great view of
the sea. The block had its own pool and a great wee snack bar in fact it was the only place we
found where you could get a sandwich instead of a full meal. Meals at the resort are quite formal
sit down affairs but we did not mind that and tried to eat in every resturant. The best being
the gourmet pub (shepherds pie) and the worst being the sandwicherie one night where i ordered
pasta with a cheese sauce which was vile, however they redeemed thereselves a couple of nights at
around 12 when they opended the grill and served hamburgers to die for just what you need
to soak up the cocktails. Entertainment really lets this place down, the venue they use for
the acts is tiny and claustophobic so we used the main bar on the beach most nights.
We didnt use the concierge apart from getting towels so cant really comment on them. Our housekeeper
came to our room at 5pm to do the room on the 2nd day and we turned him away as we had been
on the beach all day and it was now dark, I think he used that to his advantage and came at that
time every night so we only had our room done twice i

We visited EDSS over Christmas and New year for our honeymoon. We had never been to Mexico before and absolutely loved it. We didn't want to leave, the resort is lovely, stunning landscapes, trees, gardens, wildlife and beach. When we went out of resort we found the area to be fantastic and the people so friendly. We will definitely return to Mexico. This is a long review, sorry.

Room - swim up suite, very spacious, huge bed, table and chairs, dressing table, flatscreen tv, mini bar with your choice of beers, water and soft drinks, robes, Jacuzzi bath and bathroom with good shower but tiny toilet room. Random sofa and stool turned up halfway through holiday. Swim up was fantastic, loved having our own sun loungers and a dip in the pool or swim to bar whenever we wanted.

Concierge - very helpful, no mention at all of meetings, tours or time shares. Arranged our honeymoon package and helped when I needed the doctor.

Honeymoon package - free WiFi (was rubbish so wouldn't be happy if we had paid), dinner on the beach (worst meal we had at EDSS but nice enough), breakfast in our room (amazing, so much food!), decoration of room (towel art, petals and music) and a massage (but we didn't arrange to have this in the end)

Restaurants
The food was lovely and the quality and presentation was good. We regularly had to wait for dinner at all except La Carreta and we tried all restaurants at least twice except trattoria
Breakfast favourite - Arrecifes
Also tried sandwicherie and Vida
Lunch favourite - Beach BBQ or Vida
Also tried Arrecifes and sandwicherie
Dinner favourite - Mia Casa, Gourmet Pub and Vida
Tried all except Arrecifes, didn't like La Trattoria because of the poor pizza but all others were good. Gourmet pub menu is difficult to understand but the food is good.

Staff - the majority of the staff were amazing. There are so many staff everywhere you go always saying ola. Special mention to Lorenzo at our swim up bar, Luis at gourmet pub, Juan Carlos at sandwicherie and trattoria, Gasper in Arrecifes and Anna on the beach who were all amazing.

Beach - you had to be up before 730 to get a Balinese bed on the beach and not much later for a lounger. Regularly saw people reserving beds for majority of day and not using them. Loved the tree lined beach and seeing the wildlife and fish.

Bars - I mainly drank soft drinks, mojitos or Cosmos but did try other ones. I think husband tried them all. Unfortunately the milk based cocktails made me ill. Our favourite bar was the small swing bar by the quiet pool and our swim up bar.

Entertainment - the entertainment team are brilliant, they don't bother you but if you do see them they're very friendly and enthusiastic. The Piccadilly theatre is funny, it looks like a church hall, we watched the Christmas Eve show but it was hilariously bad and left. The bands at the main bar weren't that good but at least there was some music. There was a marriachi band one night. The dorado idol (karaoke) was funny to watch.

Christmas and New Year - there were special menus for Christmas eve, day and New years eve although we didn't try them. New years eve was brilliant, party on the beach with rock circus, disco, drinks service and a late night taco cart!

Shop - extremely expensive! £14 for 2 bags crisps, and a small packet of mini cookies when I couldn't stomach hotel food.

Illness - I was ill for over a week with an upset stomach, not sure what was causing it but I was worst the day I had the milk based cocktails. I ended up seeing Luis the on site medic who sold me some tablets for US$40. They worked and I was able to enjoy rest of holiday. I avoided milk and cheese though. My husband wasn't ill so I think it was down to my own tummy not handling the different foods and dairy very well rather than the resort.

We'd love to go back one day.

My husband and I were very impressed with the food and service at El Dorado Seaside Suites. Our travel agent, Jennifer at VIP Vacations, recommended this resort after we stayed at the El Dorado Royale last year. The Mexican and Italian restaurants were our favorites and the portions were a good size. There was never a long wait at the restaurants. The rooms were spacious. We also did spa treatments - I did a deep tissue massage and my husband did the hydrotherapy. We both loved it. We would definitely go back to this resort.

My husband and I enjoyed our third stay at El Dorado for the week between Christmas and New Year's. When I mentioned this was our third visit while checking in, we were upgraded to one of the lovely new suites, in room 311. We keep returning because of the excellent service, wonderful food, beautiful grounds, and fabulous snorkeling right from property's beach. The atmosphere is relaxing and elegant, with romance the over-riding theme.
What to pack? The resort seems to be going for a slightly more formal look for the evening meal, which I welcomed. It's a special place with many guests there for special reasons, and I enjoyed looking my best in dresses, while my husband wore shirts with collars, lightweight slacks and casual shoes for the evening dinner. Of course, during the day it's all swimsuits and casual wear. And since the guests are mostly couples, I never felt like a bikini competition was going on at the beach or pool, only a comfortable attitude of acceptance.
This trip we spent all our time at the resort property and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment and beach activities. Although we were told the place was fully booked, there was never a long wait at the restaurants and we always found a great spot on the beach. The staff was excellent, as always. I would love to return again!

Room Tip: Don't worry about not having a beach view, the entire place is beautiful!
