“An enjoyable time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2012

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 girls (8 & 6) and we had a fantastic time (11th - 25th August).

The food was actually impressive for an all inclusive. Japanese and Tapas restaurants are a must. Snack bar is actually very good as was main buffet.

I can understand some of the frustrations voiced by others as the resort had a major air conditioning failure during this period, with some people being sent to other linked resorts as one block was out of action. A shame really.

Akumal beach to snorkel with turtles is a must and we also spent all day at Dolphinaras swimming and interacting with Dolphins for the day. It is a must, especially with children.

Mini club for the children was very well organised. Sharon and Mara (apologies if got name wrong) were excellent. Lion King show was very good, even without air con working.

We had a fantastic time and yes, there will always be niggles, and some people were affected more than others, but overall what a very pleasant and safe hotel. We felt very relaxed about our children going off around the hotel(s), as they were quite confined.

Would go back again.

Room Tip: We went for a privileged suite which gives you that extra room as a family and also slightly better...

We recently stayed at the Catalonia and I have few things positive to say. The pictures on their website are very misleading, the beach is very rocky and the area that we could swim was very small, so we paid a cab $18 one way to the beach at akumal(very nice beach) Several people had to have their feet bandaged from cuts from the rocks. The rooms were clean yet needed severe attention not going into much detail, our roof leaked in the evening and had to call maintenance because our water was off. The staff very friendly and the food was some of the best we've had at an all inclusive. Overall good vacation but not the best we will go back to what we know which is the gran Bahia resorts!!

Didn't ever need to leave, but it's nice that it's within walking distance from the marina. And one other day we trekked to Xcaret. But besides that, hunker down, enjoy the pool and the beach, try every single tequila you can during dinner, and enjoy yourself.

Room Tip: We did have to change rooms, but it was because of a surprise plumbing problem from the room upstair...

My husband and i stayed at this resort from July 19th thru the 26th. We have been vacationing in Mexico for the last 12 years or so, so we have had the opportunity to stay at several resorts (always all inclusive) over the years. I was skeptical about the resort because of some of the negative reviews, but i am one that believes you have to see for yourself. So i booked our trip thru Funjet with our travel agent Sharon Petty (Farmington, Missouri) who by the way is absolutely the best travel agent that you find anywhere.

Now onto the review: I booked us in the Privleged Suite
Transfer from the airport took about 1 hour and 20min there were 2 stops ahead of our resort
Check in was fast and easy we were greeted with a drink and a smile, our room was ready so off we went with the bell hop. Don't forget to tip.
Our room was wonderful, clean, and spacious we also had a double patio with 2 loungers on one side and a table and 4 chairs on the other side with a big soaking tub. Our room was 8202. The bathroom was large, with 2 double sinks, a separate toilet area and a very large shower with a rainforest shower head and a hand held shower head as well easily could fit 2 people in this. The area was quite and a little secluded from all the hub bub, but quick walking distance to every thing nothing more than a couple of min away. Our room was cleaned everyday and we came back to a different towel creation that was fun, we also had a turn down service at night with chocolate on the pillows. Robes are provided and a large amount of storage in the 3 rooms. The housekeepers were fantastic, we left valuables out and nothing was every missing, we tipped everyday and got what we wanted and needed in our room with out asking after the first day. We lost power in the entire suite one night when my husband turned on his over bed light, it was about 11 pm we called the front desk and in less than 5 min a maintenance person was there and had it fixed.
The resort grounds are beautiful and well kept, they work everyday to keep them this way. The fountains from the pool area to the main lobby were not working. There are 2 lobbies both small but service was never an issue.
There are several bars and swim up bars. Drinks non alcoholic or alcoholic drinks were always easy to get. Tip the bartenders and they don't forget you or what you drink. We take insulated mugs so that we don't have to make so many trips to the bar.
The Chill out is an open air bar with a awesome relaxing view of the ocean we spent a lot of time here watching people and just relaxing.
We stayed for 8 days so we got 4 dinner vouchers for speciality dinners, we ate at the steak house 2 times, the Italian 1 time and the Japanese 1 time. They were all wonderful and staff were great, Japanese cooking show was great and fun. There are 2 buffet restaraunts one that is open air and the other is air conditioned we ate at both and preferred the open air again the staff work very hard and always very helpful. Again don't forget to tip, also by going privilege you get special setting.
The pools were somewhat large there are 3 of them, plenty of room to walk around or just relax on the ledges and drink.
The beach is very small, and rocky so bring water shoes, there are a few areas that you can get into that are sandy but the shoes give you more options for entrance and exits to the sea.
Snorkling equipment are free and i don't think there is a time limit but it is fun and we seen a lot of tropical fish and different sea creatures, we did the catamaran ride which is also free and it was fun the captain does all the work (go early and book your time they fill up fast). Don't forget to tip the captains work hard to make sure you have good time.
There are all kinds of loungers around the pools but not all have umbrellas for shade to get one of these you need to put something on the area you want by 8am. There are plenty of loungers facing the ocean with umbrellas we never had a problem no matter the time of the day to get these as we were not early risers every day.
The entertainment staff are okay, we have seen better with more going on around the pool at other resorts and the shows at night start a little late around 9:30pm and go for about 45min to an hour in the air conditioned theater. The shows are a little below what we have seen else where but we enjoyed a couple of them. We did visit the disco as it didn't open til after the show was done for the night and truly by that time we were beat from being in the sun all day.
This is a family friendly resort so there were children there and from what i seen the staff in the kids club did a great job, with that said there were parents that did not send their kids there so at times it was noisy and you did have to watch out for little ones around and in the pools. No big deal for us because we raised 2 of our own.
We always felt very safe at the resort and the walk to the marine which is about 7 minutes at a regular pace, this is the area where you can rent a boat to go out and fish or whatever, there are shops and restaraunts and you can swim with the dolphins and manatees sorry don't know the cost.
Almost forgot about the spa - since we booked privileged we got 1 day free at the spa massages or body treatments were extra. We had a good time, for most of our time we were the only ones there, there were some of the jets not working in the pool and water was cool but that didn't stop us from enjoying ourselves.
I hope that this review has helped, we will be going back to this resort for our next vacation this time we will be traveling with family and we know that they will have just as much fun as we did.
Vacation is time to relax and have fun, don't sweat the small stuff, ask if you need something but do so nicely because you want to be treated the same way.
If you have any questions about the resorts or amenities you can email be at brector0176@gmail.com I'll do my best to answer your questions.

Though the Hotel experience was very good the standard room is very poor. Rusty hinges plugs hanging off wall corner broken off tv infantile pictures and old shabby paintwork.
Don't think it is good enough to be told $15 or $25 PER PERSON PER NIGHT to upgrade to a better room with fridge. At that price you could buy a fridge for the room and have change to take home. Twisting towels into funny shapes does not compensate. $3 per night for room safe!!!!!!!!!!! Also beware the souvenir sellers that are in hotel grounds every other night. 2 expensive souvenir sets with little tequila bottles actually contained water!!

This hotel could be rated much more highly but not if it continues to offend customers with 1 star hotel rooms.

I stay in this hotel because I visit family living in Puerto Adventuras. I stayed from the 12th August until the 19th. This time I travelled alone. Normally I travel as a couple with my husband.
I chose to stay here because it is such good value for money and the staff are truly amazing. Some of them I know very well and they always greet me like a member of their family.
The food as usual was up to the excellent standards as it always is and the service especially on the beach, when you need a drink is brilliant, Rapheal must get a mention.
But have to mention the lack of shade on the lagoon side of the property. If I had gone with my family, young children especially, I would have been disappointed. The lagoon is a safe shallow area for young children to paddle and play, there are very small areas of shade that allow for this. I'm not sure if the minor hurricane that came that way a few weeks before is the reason for this, blowing down some of the palapas, but it would be easily rectified. It is such a lovely area of the hotel and seems to be wasted because of this.
Apart from this minor nit pick, all is good.
