Our family (with two teenage boys) stayed at the Barcelo Maya Beach the week commencing Nov 6th. It is our 9th all-inclusive and our 6th in Mexico and this tops the list.

It truly is a fantastic family resort, what ever the age!! There was always an abundance of activities to keep the boys busy, from swimming in the pool to swimming with the fish, snorkelling, water bikes, beach soccer, water polo, water volleyball, ping pong, scrabble, giant chess, air hockey, billiard table.... to playing on a full size grass soccer pitch with lights and a stadium. (The list goes on and on) There were many families there with young children. The beach is fantastic for building sand castles for the little ones. For me, I enjoyed the warmth of the beach.

Our room was great. We had adjoining rooms, one with a king and the other with two doubles. It's the way to go. We were in Tulum Building which is the oldest section. I would NOT pay any more to be in a newer section (Colonial/Tropical or Palace). Even thought the Tulum building is older, you'd never know it... and you don't go to Mexico to be in the rooms, anyhow. We peaked into some rooms in the Colonial/Tropical and Palace section and they are no different. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. We never had any hot water issues, we couldn't hear noises from the adjoining rooms, the air conditioning was great, there was a ceiling fan, the fridge was refilled daily with water, pop and beer. You could, however, hear noises from the hallway but it was brief as the guests moved down the hallway.

The beach is the best, best, best in front of Maya Beach and Caribe Beach. There are no rocks in the water or on the beach, unlike in front of the Palace. The beach is just like all the pictures with warm water and lots of soft white sand. We never had an issue with getting loungers, but we were there in low season.

The buffet food, we thought, was only OK (selection wise) .... but none of us starved, I didn't have to cook or do dishes, so there are no complaints. The boys loved the fresh fruit, waffles, pancakes, hamburgers, pizza, pasta, ice cream and desserts. We didn't eat at any of the a'la cartes (Mexican, Spanish and Steak house). The steak house was closed while we were there. They charge $20US per person to go to an a'la carte at either the Colonial/Tropical sections. You can eat at any of the beach front buffet restaurants in the other sections. They are open until 6:30ish and are more for the lunches and late afternoon snacks.

The service within all the hotel was great. There are lots of little shops within the Barcelo complex. You can wander into the shops of all the sections. The shops tend to all sell the same stuff. There is a little shopping centre in the Complex. There is a shuttle bus to transfer you around complex (we walked all but one time). We didn't go to any of the shows. They charge $5US for 15 minutes of computer/internet use.

Taxi rides are approx. $20US one way to Playa del Carmen. We did not leave the complex as we've been to Playa Del Carmen before and the resort offered all we needed..... relaxation!!!

Would I go back.... YES!! Would I recommend the hotel... YES!!!

My husband and I (we are 32 years old) went for our 1 year anniversary in June, 2011. We had a fantastic time! Met a lot of great people and some of them, including us, are actually going back next June. It seemed like all the guests were nice and we enjoyed meeting new people. The rooms were always clean, they come twice a day, that was great! The buffets were good. Breakfast is the better of the 3, but they were all good. The beach is gorgeous and it's not overcrowded at all. Try to take advantage of the entertainment provided at night in the theater...it's actually pretty good and can be fun. We didn't go every night but a few, and it was a good time. Take a ride into Playa Del Carmen/downtown at night. It's cooler so you can walk the main stretch and not be miserable, and the bars/nightlife is pretty fun.

We felt very safe at this resort as well. That was comforting. And the staff is friendly and helpful. I have heard of AC issues after reading other reviews, but ours was just fine, and when we were there, the people we met, none of them had any AC issues either.

Hope you aren't afraid of lizards! :) I tend to be a jumpy person and they can definitely surprise you, but they run away from you, so don't worry about that.

All in all, this place is a great price for a really good trip! You don't have to spend a lot of money to enjoy a week in Mexico. I higly recommend the Barcelo!

a very big resort, you have to like walking to stay here. we stayed in the building "tulum" the rooms are very clean and comfortable. they may say that rooms have an ocean view, there is only about couple rooms that do. we could only see trees and lots of birds. there is lots of pools (very cold). the beach and ocean are perfect, lots of fish by the beach very cool !. lots of beach chairs.if your looking for nightlife there is a lobby bar, and a disco and beach bars(close at 6 pm). there is a nightly show, not bad some nights better thann others.the resort itself in a forest of trees and shrubs very cool, paths leading everywhere. you see lots of geco and iguanas. met a crab on one trip to the beach.did notice one night that they have people spraying and fogging certain areas of the resort. maybe to keep down the bugs. not sure. the staff are very friendly and helpful. one thing more take usa transfers from the cancun airport! private van return was 120 usd. for 3 people. its nice not stopping at alot of resorts on the way to yours.

Just came back. Definitely will go there again. Excellent food, very clean beaches, fantastic tours - what else can you dream of?! And the Canadian reps Gerry and Alex were very helpful.

We were there Oct 24th to Nov 7th. I can't complain too much about anything. The buffets were good. The Mexican and Spanish restaurants are excellent. I recommend the tortilla soup and the fajitas at the Mexican restaurant. The menu at the Spanish restaurant was missing about 3 of the mains but they had short ribs that they sometimes called roast beef that was so tender. I recommend the Mayan desert coffee they had at both of these restaurants. It has Mayan liquor they set on fire and pour over coffee and ice cream.

There is great snorkeling right off the beach. We saw so many fish The angel fish will eat right out of your hand. Lots of sting rays and at least 5 turtles. All in the swimming areas. I suggest the left side of the Beach swim area at the outer line there is some nice corral, and the left side of the Palace swim area always seemed to have a couple of turtles.

We went with West jet and found that the tours they had were very expensive and the same price as the lobby Concierge. You can get a much better deal on tours if you walk directly across the highway there is a hut that sells tours. You have to Give Alfrado a deposit and he books the tour and you pay the rest when they come get you to take you. At first i was skeptical about giving a guy on the side of the road money but it worked out great. When the tour we booked got postponed Alfredo personaly contacted us and made other arangements. We went on a Sian ka'an jeep tour for $110 instead of the $165 Westjet wanted. Another example is a Tulum tour for $60 instead of $100.
THANK-YOU Alfredo!!
We went to 2 Cenotes places just across the highway from the entrance to the left 5min walk. Chikin Ha had 3 the first one was the nicest open Cenote we went too. But my Favorite was at the second place Kantun Chi. They have 4 Cenotes and the last one was the farthest you could swim into. It was like swimming in a cave with light holes in the ceiling. I suggest a water proof flash light for all of them. We paid $15 for each place. They were one of the best parts of the trip.
