“Excellent Stay”
Reviewed 26 December 2012

My wife and I stayed for 5 nights over Christmas. We were very pleased with the location in the area and it's proximity to the places we wanted to see. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. We found the best waitress in Mexico at this resort, Abdi, who was working the Beach Buffett. She was unbelievable. The food was all good.
Great choice for a family when it comes to the beach. The resort beach is Somewhat nestled in a cove. The beach is excellent, and the water doesn't get deep for quite a while. Lots of chairs, no need to worry.
The only criticism I can offer refers to the terms the resort uses. We booked in the Premium, which we assumed would give you a little extra, yet Premium gave you the least services! This really only affected us when it came to picking a la carte restaurants, which only gave us 2 choices. And the restaurants are chosen by the resort for you, so that wasn't very good.
We would return to this place.

Room Tip: Pick 3rd floor for more privacy and better view.

This resort was amazing the food was good very clean and it would be great for family's or couples. My wife and I like it so much we want to take our little ones back with us. All the staff that we encountered were so friendly. Some of the most hard working people I have ever met and always smiling. Love this place

I booked this trip a few weeks before departure not knowing what to expect, as it was my first time to Mexico. We had a great time. The resort is large and beautiful. Completely walkable, unlike what some other reviewers have said. The food and bar was good. We ate at the buffets for lunch and one or two dinners. We arrived late (around 10pm) and found there was nowhere to eat. That was a little disappointing, even if there had been a snack bar or something it would have been nice. The beach at our hotel (maya beach) is quiet and nice, always an abundance of beach chairs. Further down at the other resorts (caribe and tropical) is where all the beach activities are. We found out pretty quickly that we could eat and drink at all the resorts during the day (except palace which we never made it to) so we didn't have to go back to our resort for lunch or drinks. We ate at the spanish, mexican and steak house a la cartes. All of them were very good. Not really anything negative to say about this resort. It takes about 2 hours from the airport if you take the bus provided by your airline with stops at other hotels. If you get the chance, go to Xel-Ha as an excursion. The hotel is really good at pricing and suggesting excursions targeted to your interests.

Room Tip: Ask for building 2. We were on the ground floor and didn't find it very noisy. Walked off our ba...

This is the first time we have been to Mexico and the first time we have stayed in a Barcelo Hotel and would definately go back.

It took us an hour to get to the resort from the airport (we did not have to make any other drops), we were greeted with a drink and the check in was easy and pleasant. The receptionist gave us lots of information about the resort, outlining the different areas and advising that we could use facilities in the Beach and Caribe areas.

Our room was on the ground floor of the Labna building. It was large with two double beds, a large flatscreen TV, large bathroom, plenty of clean towels, fully stocked minibar (coke, sprite, fanta, corona, joice & peanuts) free safe and slippers and bathrobes were provided for your use. There are also ice despensers dotted around the building for your use.

The room was clean and was cleaned to a high standard every day. We also had fresh towels every day as well as a knock on the door about 4pm to see if we needed any more towels. The minibar was stocked up regularly. If you want clean sheets you have to let them know by hanging a notice on the door.

The beach at the 'Beach end' of the resport was brilliant - white sands, blue sea, nice sunlougers. This was also the quiter end of the beach which suited us perfectly. The middle part of the beach is busier and is where they do the activities. Other parts of the beach seemed to be a little rockier.

The pools were great and were clean. Around the pool area there are lots of sunbeds and hammocks. It's really sunny and hot in Mexico and there were shaded areas around the pool which I thought was good.

We mainly ate in the buffet areas. Food was a good standard and there was always plently of choice. If you can't find something that you like here then you won't anywhere! We found it always to be well cooked. They have a different theme every night - spanish, mexican, itialian etc. In the evening they always have a big fresh join of meat cooked which always looked great.

We did go to the Spanish restaurant a couple of times and the food there was awesome. Would definately recommend.

The staff generally work really hard to please the guests. As soon as your drink is empty it is being filled up and they really can't do enough for you, even if you're not leaving a tip that day. The staff around the hotel generally work really hard and always greet you with a smile.

The grounds of the hotel are beautful and immaculate.

In the evening they put on a different show every night in the theatre which we thought was really good for guests. We didn't see any but didn't hear any complaints about them.

Finally, we found this to be an excellent hotel and would definately return.

Room Tip: Ask for one on the second floor as sometimes it can be noisy on the ground floor with people walking...

Just returned from our one week stay and wishing we could be back. Having travelled to this area a number of times, this was our favorite place with the kids for a number of reasons. Although a bit dated, the property was exceptionally clean - I have never seen as many housekeeping staff and wait staff (at the buffet restaurants) before. We arrived to find our room was exceptional clean (and thoroughly cleaned each day). The bathroom in particular was well cared for and there was hot water (not lukewarm as with other properties) for baths and showers. The room smelled fresh and not musty. There wasn't sediment in the bathtub coming from the taps as we have found in other locations. The property had all the activities it possibly could including mini-golf, tennis, and a nearby outlet of shops (not just the typical gift store). Jose at the theatre bar was amazing. A couple of reviews mentioned that the staff was not friendly but I disagree - many could not speak English well which may have created the perception of unfriendliness. We found the staff more than happy to accommodate our large group of 8 adults and 9 children. All staff name tags listed their first and last names and everyone was focused on working hard - it is a big place but designed well with little walking distance from any of the amenities or neighboring buildings (beach, caribe, palace, etc) that are all part of the Barcelo name. We missed the al la carte dinners but happy with the buffets. Ate salad, fruit, and the typical buffet items all week and no one got sick. Kids waterpark was a hit as was the kids pools adjacent to the main pools. Always able to find a spot on the sandy beach and we didn't require water shoes as the ocean had a nice sandy bottom and was shallow to accommodate kids or swimmers in the water. We snorkeled off the beach and loved the pier. Others in our group went kayaking and enjoyed themselves. Exceptional property for families - always able to get food, the fruit and popcorn at the main bar was a hit. The few downsides included - theatre shows didn't start until 930pm which was too late for the kids. But they loved the kids minidisco that happened before that. The kids club is geared for 4-12 year olds with lots of activities including wall climbing, water polo, ecological walks, trampoline bungee, splash park, playground time, etc and it would have been nice of they had a daycare for kids 3 and under (including an area for babies and toddlers to nap as other properties have). The room we had just 2 double beds (hard ones as usual for Mexico) and it would be nice if they offered a separated area for the kids to sleep instead of one big room. Theatre shows were entertaining but started too late for our kids. Check in and out was great - we needed an adjustment to one room as it wasn't adjoining to the second room (2 rooms are needed for families of 4 or more) and the staff accommodated our request.

We heard great things about the Japanese restaurant but didn't book early enough to secure a reservation. Also bookec a free family photo session which turned out great and the kids loved getting their picture with the animals - Jerry the baby lion, the two monkeys or the parrots. The gift shop prices were not outrageous - minus the cost of sunscreen. We ran out and paid 40us at the gift shop. The prices for the kids spa was too high but a cute experience.

We always felt safe and can't wait to return. Highly recommended for those wanting a family-friendly hotel.

On a different note - we booked with Sunwing and got a great price. Spend more and reserve your seats and we may consider upgraded to Elite Plus next time for immediate checking at the airport.

Great trip!!!!

I feel perplexed she people write "long walk to restaurant", "pool not clean", "food not good". I wonder if I somehow got low standard of quality. Well at least in early December, the pools were sparkly clean and beautiful. Just don't drink water from them, ok?

Long walks, hello? Are we on vacation or what? I don't mind 2-3 minute walk amongst beautiful gardens.

Food quality and selection was excellent to me. They change the menu in a la carte restaurants every day. I stayed in the past at Barcelo Palace and didn't find much difference in food quality with Beach, but Palace offers more selection of fresh juices for breakfast, something I noticed. And you can visit all Palace's restaurants for just $20 USD extra per dinner.

There is lots of activities for children, small, and teens: water slides, ball games, and of course pools. There are dance classes for adults.

Speaking of the actual ocean, the water entrance is not that good, lots of sharp coral. But you can patches of good sandy bottom as well.

Kukulcan theater deserves special mention. There are pre-show activities for children on the stage. And then the show itself. We attended "Pareja Ideal" show and it was a riot!! Very funny!

Overall I think the Barcelo resort is an excellent place for a typical middle class family, or honeymooners, probably too expensive for students, and too laid back for an adventurous types.

I visited the Barcelo chain twice and both times during off peak season so I can't really speak for busy season like holidays or summer, I would not be where the crowds are anyways.
