Just returned today from this hotel. Now when I say this hotel it should be mentioned that this RESORT is made up of several joined hotels so you cannot rate this properly under the given title. We stayed at the Barcelo Maya Beach Tropical. We had access to all of the other premises. Our hotel was very clean, the food variety was very good, it was easy to book the other speciality restaurents at the, fluent in English, guest services and a good time was had by all, 2 adults 2 children. A couple of quick tips, the excursions are expensive, if you want swimming in the Cenotes then there are some of the best on the opposite side of the road to the resort, they are inexpensive.Take mosquito repellant. The road is fast and dual carriageway so be very careful crossing. Standing by the road you can flag down the collectivo bus (minibus), again cheap and normally air conned, half the price of the taxi even with 4 people. You can easily reach Tulum (Mayan ruins and shopping) and Del Carmen (shopping and access to Cozumel island). Beach is very good, the sea is full of fish, the odd turtle and various other sea creatures. This was our first visit to Mexico, the only reason I would not stay in this area of Mexico again is we do not visit the same place twice, the world is too big.

Room Tip: Our room was on the top floor, there was some air conditioning noise but I don't think you can a...

We spent 2 weeks all inclusive at this hotel. Rooms were spacious and the entire hotel very clean. We had a room on the main floor and I was concerned with the noise. We heard some loud guests coming home late at night but overall very quiet. I would stay on the main floor again especially near the pools/beach.

The beach was the highlight for us. Great sand, lots of palm trees for shade and a very gradual drop off in the water. One of the best beaches I have been to.

Food was excellent, with a good variety in the buffet. The restaurants had fabulous service and provided good change from the buffet. For 2 weeks we had 6 restaurant reservations and we especially enjoyed the Steak and Mexican restaurants.

Staff were all excellent, especially the concierge who provided some personal assistance.

The hotel was just starting to close down the Maya for renovations which included some of the restaurants (guests being checked into the Caribe) but this did not effect our trip.

I would have no hesitation about returning to this property.

Room Tip: Room near the beach and pool

We stayed at Barcelo for two weeks, we had a lovely sized room with a king size bed! The mini bar was filled every day and the room was cleaned with fresh towels and bedding. When we arrived we had fresh fruit and a bottle of bubbly in our room. The hotel was everything we expected. The staff were brilliant and done everything we requested. The beach was amazing white pure sands and clear water with lots of sea life. The pool area was clean and very relaxing. The breakfast was very enjoyable and lots to choose from. We ate in the buffet restaurant mornings and some evenings. In the evenings there would be different themes for food. We very enjoyed these. We were given 6 al a carte tickets to use over the 14 nights. We really enjoyed the gill and Spanish restaurants. The Mexican al a carte was very disappointing. That was only the bad point I can make. The grounds are kept very clean and tidy! I enjoyed evey minute of our holiday and would go back. We loved mexico and the hotel had everything near to it. You couldn't ask for more the Barcelo there is everything you would want. Don't be put off with over reviews it is a lovely place.

Room Tip: Request near to the pools it's a massive hotel and you would be nearer to the beach.

My family and I stayed here from April 8-13, 2013. This was our first all inclusive vacation, and we were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with nothing but respect. The pools were amazing, the beaches were immaculate. We went to the beaches and pools at various times of the day, and never really had trouble finding a spot. There was so much to do, and it seemed like not enough time to do it! Our favourite part of the vacation was searching for lizards, which run wild all over the place! We were never bothered by anyone trying to sell us time shares...actually, we never came across one at all! We spent a day in Xel-Ha and Tulum, which was amazing...I highly recommend it. We went into Playa-del-Carmen for one afternoon, and took public transportation to get there - it only took about 30 minutes to get there. If you don't mind being crammed into a van with the locals, I highly recommend it, it's quite an experience. Be careful when shopping in Playa-del-Carmen. I purchased a "genuine Sterling Silver ring" which turns my finger green :-/ Oh well, it was an experience. The food in the buffet restaurants was great, we were all able to find something, and they changed the dinner menu every night to a new theme, which kept things fun! Our servers at dinner, Charlie and Juan, were AMAZING! They made us feel like royalty! If you have kids, you're going to want to stay away from the main pool, it's a bit of a party place. This is where all of the activties take place. If you're looking for a more quiet, kid friendly place, I highly recommend going to the adjacent pools, which you have full access to, and full service to as well...and they are much less crowded. Lastly, we were told to bring American money, as well as Pesos...I do not recommend both currencies...Pesos are accepted, and appreciated everywhere. We did not feel obligated to tip the bar staff, although it was appreciated when we did. The ONLY thing we would like to see updated are the beds...the only options were 1 king bed, or 2 double beds...the option of a King and a single would be great :) Other than that, we LOVED our vacation, and we will definitely, without a doubt, return here.

I don't know where to start. This was our first vacation outside the United States, so we don't have too much to compare it to but it set the bar high for other vacations to follow. We went with family and friends but also it was kind of a honeymoon, 5 years late. I'll try to hit on the major points like customer service, food/drinks, room, activities, and misc things.

CUSTOMER SERVICE
The check in was quick and easy. There was a little wait, but not too long. We arrived right around 2 pm (local time) and there were a few couples ahead of us. When you get off the transportation to the resort the bellhops will take your luggage if you like and guard it until your room is ready if it isn't already. The front desk clerks explained everything quickly and efficiently and tried to get you going on your vacation in only a few minutes. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived but I figured it wouldn't be since check in is really scheduled for 3 pm, but I'll explain why it wasn't ready in a moment. While we waited we were given their house wine/champagne with a cherry. Wasn't too bad but I wouldn't ask for it again. We were also allowed to use the lobby bar while we waited, which was nice. They have almost, and I say ALMOST all the different kinds of alcohol you may want to drink with all the mixers. They also have popcorn and peanuts and other little snacks you may find by a bar. When we went up to our room we quickly realized the previous occupants left it a mess for housekeeping. We peeked in and there were small piles of sand and leaves in the room from where the housekeeper was cleaning up. She also had to bring floats out of the room, so I understood why it was taking a little longer to clean up.

ROOMS
After we were able to get in our room we were pleased. The king bed was nice and big, there were hangers in the closet for our clothes. They had robes we could use, the mini fridge was stocked with Corona, Coke, Sprite, Water, and juices. The bathroom looked marvelous, the bathtub/shower was huge. I'm nearly 6 foot and 185 lbs and I was pretty much completely covered by the water when it was filled. The balcony was nice, we had the garden view, which was pleasant to see the birds and in reality even the ocean view has trees and the pool area to look through to see the ocean. The towels were huge and had plenty of towel to dry off with. We watched TV sometimes and there were some decent channels with decent movies on. Be aware that after midnight there were 1 or 2 channels with some soft core adult entertainment on, so if you go with your children and they stay up late be warned.

FOOD/DRINKS
The buffets were pretty decent. Nothing to brag about, but it did what it was meant to do. They really put work into their food and nothing I had tasted bad. They had something for everyone and even the dinner buffets had themes and the staff went beyond to make the decorations match each theme such as seafood night, Mexican, Spanish, and Oriental. Even if you don't like those foods they still had the hamburgers and hotdogs and such for you. They keep good hours for the buffets, so you won't go too long without having the opportunity to go get some food to eat. The Al A Carte restaurants were delicious. Some of them were under construction while we were there, so the choices were a little limited as far as nights. But since we wouldn't be able to get one we wanted while we were there they worked with us and got us into one we weren't originally offered as kind of a apology. The whole experience was amazing, the food, the staff, the ambiance, just everything down to the table clothes immersed you into the theme for the night. If you go the all inclusive route you can drink whatever you want, whenever you want. The pool bars close at 7pm but the lobby bar is 24hrs. They do have a manager of sorts that walks around to make sure no one is getting too rowdy and if they seem to intoxicated they will cut them off if they can. There did seem to be a little bit of resistance from very few bartenders as far as what alcohols they would give you, I guess they felt certain ones were premium and should only be offered to those with the upgraded bracelets. But for 99% of the time you could request the top shelf liquor and get it. The only beer I think they had was Corona, and most bars that was self serve. The pop machines were self serve as well. Most bars only had 2 or 3 bar tenders so at busier times they could get overwhelmed, they may not have always had smiles on but they were always nice and helpful if you couldn't decide on which drink to get.

ACTIVITIES
There was no shortage of things to do for all ages. Tons of pools and kids spots all over the place. Even in the big pools they have a shallow end that is blocked off for the kids. The beach is marvelous. Plenty of places to lay out and catch rays or shady spots to read a book. The water is warm and clear with some good sea life to see. They do beach activities throughout the day on the beach like volleyball or soccer. They have workers that will bring out the music and teach you dances or water aerobics by the pools. Coco Bongo comes down to sell tickets but they bring some dancers and drums to add a show to it. They have putt putt, a soccer field, tennis courts, a chip and putt green, and non motorized water sports for free. The Jaguar Disco was fun, but they overused their smoke machines most the time. The VIP area is upstairs and only costs $15, but you don't get much extra except faster bar service. At the Jaguar they have about 4 girls that come out from time to time, get up on little podium type things and dance with the music. During certain days they have little performances in the little market and they have nightly shows at the theater, which I thought were pretty good. The dancers and singers are semi-professional, by this I mean they were obviously trained and practiced a lot, but they aren't like broadway caliber. The Michael Jackson night was amazing, they did a real good job. The only negative was on Circus Circus night they had to cancel it and resorted to karaoke again due to it being broadcast live or something along those lines. Also as a little extra picture opportunities they have a baby lion, toucans, parrots, and monkeys you can pose with.

Overall, we had a really fun relaxing vacation without the children. We are thinking about taking them back with us next year because there is something to do for everyone. They even have a kids club and you can get a babysitter if you give them at least 24 hrs notice. Was well worth the money, and never had any problems what so ever.

SOME TIPS
-You have to leave a room key stuck in a little thing to keep your A/C and lights working. The idea was that during the day you take it with you and it saves electricity. We kept ours in the whole time so we could come back to a cool room and they had no issues with it.

-If you want, leave a small tip for your housekeeper. We left at least $2 every day inside a small thank you card. We received extra little things such as origami animals made out of washcloths, small chocolates, and fruit plates while the other 4 couples we came with did not. The housekeepers for the rooms are the same everyday, so I think she was trying to show her appreciation.

-The safe they provide works and we used it everyday. Never lost anything. We changed the code everyday, just in case, you never know what can happen.

-We brought $100 (US) in singles as tip money and used almost all of it. Every other drink we received we tipped $1. At the end of the stay we left $6 for the housekeeper. The buffet dinners we left $1 if the waiters were actually helping us. And the Al A Carte meals each couple left at least $3 for the waiter because they actually did a lot. The drivers and bus boys got between $1-$2 depending on how much they had to lift and such.

Going to Mayan for 4 years and 1st time, Jan 2013. This place was awesome, close to beach, pools entertainment and restaurants. A la cartes were great, buffets were excellent and loved the fact could walk to all other resorts within complex. Also access to snorkling, sail boats etc without cost just reservation was good. Everyone was nice and frriendly, rooms were very clean and housekeeping staff very accomodating. I would highly recommend this place without hesitation. Did i mention that the beach area was the best of all the places i had stayed before and not very rocky in the water either. Can't wait until next January to go back.

Room Tip: We had rooms on ground floor, found it to be very easy access and not noisy at all. I would get gro...
