We show up at the resort and to our surprise we find out Barcelo Maya Beach is CLOSED with out letting us know from either Barcelo or Expedia. They try to cover it up buy saying we are staying in a upgraded hotel the colonial and tropical we (2 couples) finally get into our rooms after many problems with the front desk my room has absolutely no electricity my sister walks into her room and turns out there are people already staying there they have their money and jewelery out on the table and my sister was given a room key to someone elses room REAL SAFE let me tell you nice to think it could happen to us.
The New Yorker in me came out and it was NOT pretty, we demanded to be upgraded to the Palace Deluxe which is the highest and most expensive of the Barcelo hotels where we had a much better experience after lossing an entire day finally getting into a room at 9pm after dealing with this for 10 hours.
I found that the food wasnt great and any of the resorts that your able to go to being at the Palace which is sad.

The place was fabulous. We stayed in Feb 2012. The food was great and 6 onsite restaurants to visit. we were there 7 days and always something to do ...many amenties 4 pools and pools adjourning the 5 Barceló hotels. and beautiful beaches. will hopefully be staying @ the one in Punta Cana in Feb 2014. The only problem we had was the cleaning agent they used everyday. left a overwhelming bleach odor to our rooms. we had them not use it and the odor went away.

We booked it through expedia.com last minute deal and I didn't expect too much due to price. what an amazing place and huge property! I booked Barceló maya Beach but due to construction, we stayed at colonial without any extra charge. they have 3 huge swimming pools and you can use them all. I went there in September and the weather was around 80F and rained one day during our stay. I've been to cancun hotel zone but Riviera maya is a lot nicer and it has white sand beach. Overall it was an enjoyable stay and i'd come back again!

We have been going to Nassau the last couple of years after a disappointing stay at another all inclusive in Cancun and another in Puerto Rico. We decided to return to Mexico and booked a week at the Barcelo Maya Beach. What a pleasant surprise we had as we entered the resort. It is beautifully landscaped and decorated. It is a very large resort but the way they have it divided, you never felt as if you were in a sea of other people. We were scheduled for the Maya Beach but ended up at the Maya Tropical. Again, it's just their way of separating people so you're never crowded. There are two large buffet restaurants, five specialty restaurants and two grills that we ended up eating lunch at each day while there. The excellent food was plentiful and the service outstanding. The rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. The mini bar is stocked with soft drinks, beer, candy and other snacks for round the clock snacking if you don't want to go to the 24 hour grill. The beach and very large pool are outstanding. Again, you never feel as though you are in a crowded resort the way they have it laid out. There are bars everywhere so you never have far to go for a nice drink, on the beach or at the pool or elsewhere on the property. There is nightly entertainment in the theater which is professionally done, unlike many other resorts. There are bars within the theater and service is
very quick, at your table or at the bar. We tend to go back time after time to a resort we really like. I have no doubt we'll be returning to the Barcelo Maya many times before we can find another resort that tops it. It's an excellent value. I can't wait to return to the Barcelo Maya Beach next year.

Room Tip: Rooms are located within buildings with a walkway in the central court area of each building. Courty...

I stayed in this hotel for three days before starting my voyage through Mexico and I can say it is a very good hotel. It is far from Cancun, about 50 minutes away by car, but if you choose to stay here you probably don't need to go to the city, anyway Playa del Carmen is nearer. The rooms are clean, well mantained, although they don't give a feel of luxury. The compound of the hotel is huge, with parks and enormous pools, and the All-Inclusive formula allows to drink and eat almost all day long. The buffet restaurant has good food, with plenty of choice, we tried also the a-la-carte mexican restaurant (in the all-inclusive formula allows you to have one diiner at one of the a-la-carte restaurants) but I can say we had better meals in other restaurants throughout Mexico. The beach is wonderful: white sand, turquoise sea, many fishes in the water. It gives the exact idea of a tropical beach. Just outside of the hotel you can enjoy the experience of taking a bath in a cenote (cenote Chikin-ha) for about ten dollars. We didn't try the excursions because we rented a car but the travel agency near the reception can organize trips almost everywhere in the surroundings. Above all it is a very good hotel!

We booked our vacation through ITravel2000 (another big mistake). We wanted oceanview so, we paid $600 extra for the Club Premium just so we could have an ocean view room, we were told that was the only way we could get it. I also contacted the hotel and expressed how important the oceanview was to us. Arrived to find no ocean view, actually no view of anything but trees. Front staff tried to upsale to another room for only $1200 more which after asking 3 times, we were finally told it still had no ocean view and then they told us to come check back the next day to see if anything else is available, had to do this once before at a different Barceló and wasted almost a whole day. The shower faucet was broken off, they came the next night at 11pm to fix it, we were already in bed, so asked them to come back. Fortunately, my husband was able to fix it enough that we could get water, but not change the temperature because they came 2 days later and only took the faucet handle from the sink. After cleaners left one day, our toilet was plugged. After all that, we still never received any of the Club Premium advantages that we paid $600 for. We decided to try to enjoy the rest of our vacation because they were not assisting us at all and then when we got home we emailed our disappointment and stated we'd never stay there again. so to compensate us, they offered us free VIP at the same hotel for our next visit. We don't want VIP treatment, so we remain very disappointed.

Room Tip: Goodluck, don't expect to see the ocean.

This was our first visit to Mexico. We were very nervous about going because family and friends kept saying Mexico is very unsettled right now.
Well let me begin by saying that we couldn't of felt more safe in this resort. Yes there are areas in Mexico that are extremely dangerous, but this was not one of them. We felt safe in the morning as well as night.
This resort is soooo well taken care of. The employees are super friendly, and hardworking! It's absolutely beautiful.
I read reviews all the time, and a lot of people posted negative comments on the food. My husband and I are not picky eaters, but our younger daughter is. She never had a problem finding something good to eat at the buffets. We made reservations for 5 restaurants. All of them were great.
One of my favorite parts of any vacation is the ocean. Unfortunately this ocean (for me) was not that great. Too much coral and because the time of year we went, A LOT of seaweed!. But I got spoiled when I went to Cayman Island. This will be the ONLY reason I won't return.
The beach is beautiful though! And they do a great job cleaning it in the morning. There was always plenty of chairs on the beach as well as the ocean.
Make sure you bring plenty of sun tan lotion. It will cost you about $30 (american dollars!) for a bottle.

Room Tip: We upgraded our room and got pool front. Liked it so much better than the orginal garden view we had...
