“Great for activities, but questionable layout”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2009

We went down to the Barcelo at the suggestion of a previous guest and our group of 30 got upgraded to the Palace instead of the Colonial. I'm always up for the free upgrade.
Pros: Great food in the reservation restuarants, although we heard the evening buffet was that great. People with kids will love the family pool. The rooms were very nice and had the expected flat screen TV. The adult pool was very nice, but if you are going to put out signs stating no reserving, then you need to enforce it. The beach is nice and long for walking and snorkeling right off the beach was great.
Cons: Unfortunately, the layout of the Palace is such that if you are in one of the sections closer to the street, it is a hike to get to any of the restaurants/lobby/bars. I understand the desire to have upscale restaurants right on the water, but they should have considered a different layout of the rooms. The service was questionable. Clearly they didn't have enough employees for a 5 star resort. As mentioned in other comments, watch for the drunk high school kids starting in early March.

What was supposed to be our Silver Anniversary, was a nightmare. Nothing went right from the booking on. Our travel agent quit part way through the booking of this trip. Bells should have gone off right then. We sent out 46 invitations and people were not able to get the info from the new travel agent. We were charged for one of our bags in Toronto. The bag did not arrive in Mexico until almost 5 days later. Our "Suite" as described in the brochure, was not as it was described. The sofa was broken and NEVER fixed for the two weeks. The TV in the bedroom was broke, it took almost a week to get a safe that locked and the lighting fixed. The suite was never cleaned properly. We couldn't get the bar fridge stocked with what we wanted, mainly WATER. Snacks were hard to get and supposed to be available. We paid a PREMIUM for the vacation and did not receive premium service. Couldn't get into the ala carte restaurants every night like we were supposed to. Did not receive a discount on anything - Supposed to. If we tipped we received good service, but only when we tipped and only when the money was up front. English was not anyone's second language. When we asked for something to be fixed they just nodded, then threw the notes away. This was like the vacation from hell.
The only thing I will recommend at this resort is the Spanish restaurant and a waiter named David. This guy went out of his way to make dinner enjoyable.

This place is great! Great Landscape, great service, great beach. Everything is in order. The thing I loved about beach was that 3 Hotels - "beach" , "caribe" and "palace" are part of the Barcelo. and you can go to any 3 beaches without any problem. Which gives you huge beach area.

Food in Italian buffet was mediocre, but we were having lunch in Beach Steak buffet.

The Barcelo is the second resort we have stayed at in Playa del Carmen. We really loved the property! It was great having access to several restaurants and bars and the beach was ENDLESS! There were a few things we were not impressed with: the location was a little too far out of Playa del Carmen. We had to pay $40 round trip for a cab ride to go into town to go shopping. Also, MOST of the staff were great, but we had one bad experience where a waiter was mocking a tip that we had left him a few days earlier. He was speaking Spanish, but pointing over at us and laughing and we could understand him. It was a dissappointment, especially since the resort is all-inclusive and tips are included. The management handled it by sending a bottle of tequila to our room. :(
Very nice place though, I would reccommend it.

Our family just returned from a 10 day holiday at the Barcelo Maya Beach. This was our second time at an all inclusive hotel in the Maya Riveria. We chose this complex becuase we were traveling with another family and we thought there would be lots of activites for our teenaged girls. Usually we like to travel and stay at small hotels and do our meals at local restaurants, however this was an easy trip for 2 families. I believe that we must have arrived during part of spring break, as the first bit our our holiday was spent with lots of young adults (teenagers) whopping it up. Actually we found them quite rude, yelling at the bar tenders for more drinks when others were waiting etc. My husband also noticed at the buffets, people were quite pushy selecting their food. (Not too sure but i thought there was enough fries to go around for everone, they could have waited their turn).

We stayed in the Uxmal building which was great for location. Close to pretty much everything. We had a ground level room which i usually do not like but this was okay.
Patio, with table & 2 chairs, and a drying rack. I think we lucked out as we got afternoon sun and our suits always dried. Patio door had a secure bolt. The room was average size, and house keeping always did a good job cleaning and re stocking the mini frig. No Complaints. Safe in room. Bathroom had a hair dryer, and was supplied with soaps & shampoo. Iron & board were also provided.

Buffets were a bit repetitive for breakfast and lunch, every night there was a different theme for dinners and i'm glad that we used all of our passes for the a la carte restaurants. We were given 4 with our resevation, another 1 with our travel company and another 1 from a guest who was leaving and didn't use theirs. I would suggest that you book your dinner resevations as soon as you get there as they do fill up quickly. Both the Spanish & Mexican restaurants were good. Long pants a must for men!!! The steak restaurant i could pass on, poor service and pretty basic food. (mine was cold) Another option is to book a reseveration at one of the other hotels in the complex. A $15 to $20 fee per person to use these restaurants. We never got around to it and by the time we decided we couldn't get a reservation.

Pool and beaches were good, lots of chairs in the sun and shade. We went out around 8 AM and picked a spot for our group of 7 everyday and had no problem. The beach at the Maya end was the best of all the complex. Actually the other guests had to come down to this end to rent/ sign out non motorized equipment. Sign up started at 9AM. The hobby cats and water tricycles were the first to be booked. Kayaks, windsurfers, beach volley balls were plentyful. Tricycles only went out if it was calm on the water and some days the hobbycats couldn't go out if it was too windy. Snorkling was GREAT right by the pier between the Caribe and Colonial. Thousands of fish, especially under the pier.

Drinks were okay, I kind of got tired of the tropical ones and ended up drinking the white
house wine, which was pretty good for a house wine. (i'm really picky). As for the others that i was traveling with, they said no 2 drinks were the same as the bartenders do not measured anything. Sometimes they were good and other times they needed to be fixed up. Oh well you can have as much or as litlle as you want. Extra Tequila & rum bottles were located next to the bars so you could add if you wanted to.

The staff was great, had no problems with anything, (other than the agressive teenagers)
I think the bartenders could have made them wait their turns. Remember to tip the hotel staff as they make $15 per 9 hour day. A dollar or 2 goes a long way for these workers.

All in all if your looking for a good holiday in the sun and you are not too picky you will have a great time.

Let me begin by saying we travel to Playa Del Carmen every year for spring break with two other families and have always enjoyed our vacation. This year, however, was different. It was our first experience with a Barcelo resort and we will never stay at one again. In a nut shell, my daughter got food poisoning and the resort would not let us cancel our dinner reservation which cost us each $20 us dollars. Why was it extra at an all inclusive? Anyway- my girlfriend tried for over an hour to get our dinner cancelled and our money refunded. she had no luck.and in fact was called a liar because "no case of food poisoning had been reported." Once my daughter was feeling a little better my husband and I decided to try and get the money refunded and after another hour and filling out a form we were finally told that our group would be refunded the money. Upon check out the charge was still there and ERIKA at the front desk could not have been ruder about it ,in fact she no longer could speak English!! Except to say the dinner was no refundable. Anyway I know its a relatively small thing but considering we all spent close to $15,000 dollars on this vacation they could accomodate us the lousy $80 bucks. Not to mention my daughter was throwing up for 12 hours!

With all the choices in and around the Maya Riveria I just could never imagine staying there again.

Some other negatives: Kids Club closed at 5. (no evening hours)
Drinks had very little alcohol content
Absolut and Baileys were an additional charge.
Staff extremely unfriendly
Additional Charge for two of the specialty restuarants.

We got upgraded to the Palace from the Beach/Caribe and it was a wonderful surprise. The rooms are great and the entire grounds are beautiful. The entire resort is very clean and well taken care of. We arrived on Wednesday and were having a wonderful time until Saturday when all the obnoxious, rude kids arrived. After that, we were not able to find any chairs by the pool or get close to a bar to get a drink. The swimup bar was packed with kids doing body shots and throwing up in the pool. Staff could not keep up with picking up after all these kids who continually left empty glasses, cigarette butts and their clothes laying everywhere. Thank goodness there is an adult pool because that is the only place that we could find any peace and quiet. We are 2 middle-aged couples who like to party and have a good time but a bunch of drunk teenagers is not something we care to be witnesses to. There was also alot of running down the halls and banging on doors between 1-4 am after the disco closed. Alot of these kids had black bracelets on (that means they're under 18 and shouldn't be allowed to drink) but we heard from several people about hotel staff selling bracelets to the young kids so they could get into the disco and drink. Hopefully this hotel will get a handle on this problem because it was really a shame to have such a beautiful place to vacation be ruined by underage drinkers. We would definitely return to this resort but never again during spring break time!
