“Top of the line resort”
Reviewed 9 October 2009

The resort is located about a one hour drive from the Cancun airport. Two other sister hotels are located here as well. The Barcelo Maya Palace is the 5* hotel of the 3. The resort is all-inclusive and all of the rooms are very spacious suites with beautiful furnishings. The beach here is awesome, excellent for swimming and snorkeling. All of the restaurants have ocean views and the cuisine is stupendous, with a wide variety of dining options.
The nightly shows are good and the theater is air conditioned, which is a plus. Overall, I definitely would give this resort an excellent review.

Helps if you know Spanish, but you can still do all right without. Grounds are beautiful, large complex. Alot of walking or riding trams. Best pool and pool bar.

We stayed at the barcelo resort in July. The hotel is absolutely beautiful. This is our first trip to this area and will not be our last. The grounds are beautiful, very clean, amazing food. The beach is only about 100 yards away from the rooms, beautiful white sand, plenty of chairs. The pool is perfect, huge never crowded, they also have tons of activities pool side and also on the beach during the day to keep everyone entertained.

We actually had a beach wedding and it was beautiful, the wedding coordinater was great and took care of everything that we needed. The wedding was 3 feet from the ocean with chairs wrapped in ribbons, rose pedals on the ground. The ceremony was great. After the wedding we had a reception with our 18 guests that flew down with us. The food was amazing, cake was great, they had a wait staff on hand for any drinks/food that we needed. The wedding was an perfect experience and could not have been better.

We were a bit worried about food at the resort but dont be. The buffets are huge and there is plenty of choices even for the hardest to please. The restraunts were great, they have a number of different restraunts. The thai/japanese was extremely good as was the steak house. We ate at 5 of the restraunts during our stay and every one of them was great and we never had a bad meal.

Accomodations at the hotel were very nice. The rooms were bigger and nicer than expected. Any time you needed your fridge refilled they would immediately come up and fill it. The rooms were also extremely clean also, daily housekeeping was excellent. The hotel staff was very warm and friendly.

We cannot wait to go back next year!!

We stayed at The Barcelo Beach report for our honey moon in 2007. As this is the early hurricane season, the resort was not very busy, which we loved. We had entire stretches of beach, pools, bars, to ourselves. The occasional fellow traveler encounter was always very laid back and lovely. We hoped from restaurant to restaurant, theater to theater with ease. I would go back there at this time of year in a heartbeat. One day of an hour long afternoon rain, otherwise, the weather was magnificent. The food was amazing at the specialty restaurants and pretty good at the buffets too. You can access the pools, theaters, bars, and beach at all four of the "resorts within the resort" - I think the Beach resort was towards the lower end of luxury, but having access to the others made it matter very little. The grounds were beautiful and there is a shuttle to town right outside the gates - Just ask the front desk. Much cheaper than a cab (the locals use it) and only a few dollars. I mini-cultural immersion is nice too. A few tips - 1) when you book, ask for a mattress pad - the bed were a touch stiff but really I had a great night sleep every night. 2) bring an insulated mug - the bars will fill these with beer or pina colada or whatever you want and it saves multiple trips to the bar as the plastic cups they serve in a pretty small. 3) Day trips to Xel-Ha, Talum and Chichen Itza were well worth it. 4) if you are going for a honeymoon or anniversary, tell them when you book. I didn't do this but I think they upgrade you and leave a bottle of champagne (or so I heard).

I can't say enough good things about the Barcelo Maya Palace. It is one of five resorts in a strip. The Palace is the nicest of all, but you are welcome to use the facilities on all four other resorts. There is so much to do and see - we didn't even make it to the other end of the complex. (We missed the water sports!) Two and only two disappointments, but they are pretty major. Internet access was complicated. We had to keep going to get pass codes. Some patrons had to pay - something new, I think. This is lousy. Internet access is not a luxury. It is a necessity and they really dropped the ball on this one. It should be included. Very annoying. Next, SKIP THE TOURS! What a tourist trap! One day of a tour threatened to ruin an otherwise great vacation. That credit card bill came in a month after I arrived home - $ 600.00. It hurt - big time. What a terrible day. If we had gone ourselves, it would have cost about $250.00. The "tour" was a bus ride that stopped at ten different resorts to pick up passengers - 1 1/2 hours. The ride home? 20 minutes - direct - one stop. This is a tour? Not at all. We were cheated. We had problems at the gate too - our admission tickets were not correct. The driver left us standing there for almost an hour. Arguing did no good. Very poor, very terrible, and when we requested a refund, it was not granted. Don't do it! Beware of the tour company within the hotel. These people are scam artists and the hotel does not stand behind them. The porters at the front gate can arrange for a taxi to take you where ever you want to go, and back, for much less. Do it yourself. It's not scary.

I had the most amazing week of my life. It was my first vacation and it was a dream! I would recommend this resort to all my friends and family! I went with my boyfriend and two friends, it was the perfect place to go, and im so glad we choose it!!

Its really neat beacause you can travel through 5 of barcelo's propertys, (they are all in a row) eat at different palces, see differnet buildings and meet tons of different people. There is a train that goes through constantly to take you from place to place if you do not want to walk.

The resort was beautiful, beach was perfect, food tasted great, pool was clean there was really nothing to complain about.

There is so much fun things to do while in Mexico, we did two day trips and spent the rest of the time at the resort.

Words can't explain how great this resort was, i would go back in a heartbeat and encourage you to go as well!!!

We enjoyed our stay here but the front desk staff were not helpful at all. We checked in late evening and the girl on the front desk was not helpful at all...here is your key and off you go. No direction. There are multiple buildings and it took awhile to find our rooms.
The pools are beautiful. The bartenders at the pool could be incredibly rude, yet others were so nice. I ordered a drink once and the bartender looked like he was so inconvienced, throwing caps; it was laughable.
The food is okay - I've had much better at the Riu's. They have champagne and orange juice in the morning and that was a nice touch.
Housekeeping was probably the worst. Bring a facecloth with you. You get one when you check in, they take it the next day, and you never see one again. We even asked repeatedly for another, and we never got one.
We had to call to have a bar re-stocked on a daily basis; they don't automatically do it for you. They never cleared old glasses ... we eventually just put them aside and waited to see how many days it would take for them to clear them. They did on our last day. Gross.
The one thing this resort offers is a mini-mall; and it was wonderful. They have a train that will take you from one part of the resort to another and that was really handy. The shopping at the hotel was just as good as going into town for the day. Fifth Avenue was fun, but we found the same deals at the hotel.
We paid such a good price for our stay - so monetarily it was worth it. If the deal hadn't been so good, it wouldn't have been worth it.
The beach is nice and the pools are beautiful and clean.
My only advice is to not pay top price to stay here...you could do much better for the money elsewhere I am sure.
Biggest downfall was definitely the staff.
Happy travelling!
