I loved this place - we got upgraded to the palace and enjoyed everything about it. The food was great, the snorkelling with sea turtles was fun and the adult bar and bartender made one rainy day the best day at the beach. The only thing I can say that was not the best was that our room was the furthest away from everything and it was a walk to get to the main area. But It was great in the sense that we can take the trolley to any other locations! Great place and is what you expect from an all inclusive!!!

I'm so confused as to why people were not as thrilled as we were by this hotel.
We (my partner and I both aged 26) thought the hotel was beautiful! We arrived in the evening and the hotel took our breath away, so romantic and beautiful.
Our room was cool, clean and spacious, air conditioning worked a treat, fridge always full, lovely rain shower, two double beds - very comfortable - it made my own bed feel hard! I haven't slept properly since I came back!
Great big tv on the wall (lots of english films always on!) We used the safe and made sure we always locked things away as sometimes the catch on our patio door would slide down! But if you don't leave valuables out they cant get taken. We felt very safe and secure though and the staff were wonderful.
Pool was clean and huge, lots of space and shady hammocks were great! Beach - fantastic! Snorkelling by the Jetty is great, watersports are included.
Food was lovely - lots and lots of choice and the al a cartes were fantastic - men - take trousers fro the al a carte nights!
Grounds were gorgeous!!! Romantic and beautiful.
Go to xel-ha and get a taxi to Ackumal Beach (10 mins away) if you love snorkelling!. Oh and take and underwater camera! We snorkelled with loads of fish and manatee's at Xel-ha and Ackumal beack is out of this world! Snorkelled alongside 3-4 huge turtles! There are lockers to keep your things safe there and a lovely little beach restaurant - so spend the day there!
The Spa at Barcelo is fantastic! Clean, modern and worth every penny! Ask them for and deals they have. We had a massage and they did us both at the same time - oh my god it was fantastic! I was worried about a man massaging me but they are very professional and knew exactly what they were doing! Felt great after!
Location is good - your about 10 - 15 minutes away from all the best sights/parks etc! Not that near to playa del carmen though so if you want big shops, coco bongos etc you'd pay out on taxi's. That wasn't our thing really. We went to the Shopping Plaza on site and that had plenty of lovely little shops and stalls and a night club if you fancied it!
The resort is nice and big and it was nice to see all the different hotels. you can walk to each one or jump on the little bus that goes every 5 minutes and goes up and down between all the hotels all day and night!
We had a fantastic time here, I can't see why any one would say differently. The only thing i would say was that the entertainment in the evening was a little cheesy but we preffered the bar or our lovely cool room with a book and the free mini bar!

This was my first time to this part of Mexico. We stayed at the Barcelo Premium resort, we had the white wrist bands. And its worth the extra pay! The food was GREAT, fresh, warm and made to order. Anything and everything for food you can think of. Great service on the resort to the dining experience to the hotel cleaning service. Upon arrival we were given a drink, check in was easy. Internet is $5 for 30mins???( i don't remember). The choice of restaurants were great, Japanese, French to Mexican. The beach was clean. The room were extremely clean and roomie.

We traveled with 40 friends and family in early June of 2010 for our destination wedding and it was spectacular. Everything was perfect and everyone had a wonderful time. Everyone is still talking about it! Food, views, activities, drinks, room, etc were all better than I ever imagined. The only complaint that I have would be that the beds were a little hard. We did take the advice of others; however, and took the comforter that was under the mattress (between the box spring and mattress) and put it under the covers and it helped a lot! A little lumpy, but it did help!

I would definitely recommend this to others looking for a destination wedding location or traveling with a big group. They definitely provide activities and food for everyone! If you are looking for a more private location, this is probably not your place.

The Barcelo Palace is a beautiful resort, large spacious accommodations, ours was very close to the beach and pool, however the restaurants were a bit of a walk, not that I mind walking too much, but it was uphill. We stayed for two weeks and never ate at the buffet once in the evenings. The a la carte restaurants were really outstanding, we had a bit of a problem with the food at one of them but returned for a second visit at someone's recommendation (earlier in the evening) and found it to be great. We truly hated the main bar in the lobby, very cold atmosphere. The shows were good but did not start until late evening and there was absolutely no music of any description played around the resort, nothing to make you feel you were in Mexico, seriously could have been in Florida! The very large pool at the Palace was very very very cold, I walked down to the other resorts and swam in their pools and they were a lot warmer. The beach was extremely rocky and lots of coarse sand in patches. We love Punta Cana and walking the beach there so of course you cannot really compare it. However the snorkling was terrific and my husband loved that. All in all it was not the worse trip but definitely not the best. In the last few years we have stayed at the Paradissus and the Melia in Punta Cana and loved both of them. This coming year we intend to return to the DR and give Mexico a miss,

Went at the end of September. The entire complex is very nice and clean. That is the first time that a bed at an all-inclusive is comfortable and didn't come home with a backache.

Beach in front of Maya Beach was very clean and not rocky, but to the right or left it was quite rocky.

FOOD: We are not picky eaters, but some of the food was not to our liking. Breakfast was good, you can never go wrong there. Lunch was good. Dinner was hit or miss on some nights. For the specialty restaurants, men must were slacks.

The pool was huge ,not kept as clean as we would've of liked to see but they were trying.

The grounds were gorgeous, they were immaculate.

We stayed at the Barcelo Maya Palace last Fall 2009 and had a great time. The staff in the upper lounge were wonderful and kept our drinks flowing. The food in the buffet was very good and always had something for someone in our group. There was a shuttle train that picks you up at the front and takes you over to the shopping in the next complex. We would definitely return to this resort. The pool was great. The beach always had chairs for us and lots of fish in the sea.
