“2 weeks on a building site”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

we have just come back from 2 weeks at this hotel, which was booked within 8 weeks of our travel. It cost £4,500 plus. There was extensive building works where the hotel was demolishing a complete apartment block and one of the hotels two pools. All you could hear from 9 in the morning until 7pm was cranes, bulldozers, jack hammers, generators and noisy vehicle reversing sirens. The noise was loud everywhere and it was impossible to relax on the beautiful beach because of the building noise. The staff in the hotel were more than lovely. The food was good. The rooms had a cramped balcony so I would say they were nearer a 2 star than 4. Cleanliness was exemplary. Of course all this is immaterial because of the horrible building works noise that completely ruined this once in a lifetime holiday

I'm glad I read reviews and got advice before going to Barcelo Maya Caribe, because it helped us (My wife and I, and another couple) make the most of what these resorts have to offer. If quality of food, or general dislike of buffets is a concern, upgrading with a Premium bracelet is a MUST. Having sit-down dinners at some of the amazing restaurants on property was the difference in liking our food experience overall. The Japanese restaurant Kyoto was amazing, so book your reservations when you check-in! It's a good idea to book a restaurant for every night you are there right away, because they do fill up fast and are well worth it.

There are some great reasons to stay at one of the cheaper properties (Caribe or Beach) or even at the medium-range (Tropical and Colonial) as opposed to the expensive Palace. If you care about a quality of beach, you will appreciate being closer to the soft white-sand beaches that the Caribe/Beach resorts offer. While I would have preferred to stay at Tropical or Colonial to be closer to the restaurants, good snorkeling and beach activities (catamaran, kayaks and water bicycles), the deal we got on the Caribe was simply too good to switch.

What impressed me the most about this resort, was the staff. They were constantly working hard keeping it in immaculate shape. There was always people sweeping sidewalks, mowing and grooming the landscaping etc. At night, they cleared all of the beach chairs off the beach and smoothed the sand out so it was pristine the next day.

The resort was also so big, that you could always find a quiet place to lay by one of the pools or beach.

There may be fancier resorts in the area, but for a great value, this one will be tough to beat anywhere!

Room Tip: Add the Premium bracelet to make your food experience much better. Also sign up early in the morning...

Flew to Mexico with Hubby and Friends on 22nd April 2013 for a 2 week holiday, good flight, long 2 hour transfer to our hotel. Check in was about 15 mins per couple/group where they gave you a run down of the hotel and whats available etc. Once we got to our room we were happy with it lots of space, big bathroom, lots of wardrobe space too. We were over looking the gardens. Towels and Toiletries all provided, mini bar restocked daily, coffee machine and a flat screen TV and Air Con. There was a cake and bottle of champagne waiting for us too upon arrival a lovely touch.

Our Maid was lovely, very friendly and couldn't speak much English, i always had a laugh with her trying to explain things to her to make her understand me, it never worked but she did laugh a lot and was always smiling.

The Hotel and grounds were looked after very well, very clean and tidy. We had to walk though the gardens everyday to get to the beach and after a slow stroll we were there in 10 mins.
The beach was very clean and very big, the sea was a beautiful turquoise colour and so warm to swim in. Never had a problem getting a Sunbed, lots of shade too. The Beach Bars were close by and never much of a problem getting a drink.

The Restaurants were clean and tidy, plenty of staff attending the tables, making sure you had a drink and asking if all were ok. Food choice was good plenty there even for a fussy eater. They have an ice cream corner for the kids but most of the adults were eating it, us included.

The Al a Carte Restaurants were excellent, service 1st class, food wonderful, we ate in the Steak House twice, Spanish Restaurant, Sea Food Restaurant and we ate in the Steak House at the Barcelo Colonial as it was our friends Birthday and we paid $20 each and the manager greeted us on the door and sent a bottle of Champagne to the table for the Birthday Boy...a lovely touch.

The Bars around the Hotel were always busy especially the Lobby Bar and they did the most delicious Cocktails, The Mud Slide was to die for....!

We did a few excursions, Boat Trip to Isla Contoy which was full of wildlife, we got the local bus from outside the hotel to Akumal and went swimming with the Turtles, the beach there had powder white sand and was very beautiful, when we went to leave we tried to get a Cab and the driver tried to rip us off, a police man came over and spoke to the driver who then drove us to the bus stop at about a 100 miles an hour with the hump....needless to say he never got a tip lol....

We were unaware but there was a problem with our bathroom from day one, the maid must have found the problem and reported it. Maintenance came in several times in the first few days as the people below us had noticed the problem. We soon forgot about this and thought all was ok then 4 days before we came home we were asked to move rooms but as we didn't want to pack and unpack we said we had no problem with our room and after this we were given gifts galore, free meal, free internet, flowers on the bed, fruit, Champagne and much more. We thanked the staff but there really was no need to do this for us.

The weather was fantastic....sunshine every day, we all came home with golden tans.

We all had a great time, the only niggle i can talk about is that the long corridors did echo noise and some guest were very loud late at night coming back to their rooms, slamming doors and shouting...not nice at 4am.....

Room Tip: My advice would be to request a top floor room close to the beach.

We would have given this resort possibly four stars had our camera not been stolen from the pool deck. Within the span of a few minutes (15 minutes) someone staying in the resort went through our bag and took our camera. When we told management about the theft, they refused to do anything until we threatened to give the resort a terrible rating. After that the most they could compensate was an incident report and to allow to stay in our rooms until check out. The upper management was very unapologetic. While having traveled to five continents, the danger of theft is always present and we understand the liability, yet we never thought it would happen at a very highly praised resort. If anything that is the standard of guests the resort allows into their complex and unfortunately we have no pictures to share with our family and friends about our trip.

Up until the theft, there were noticeable struggles in the resort. One of the big things we noticed was the workers seemed very overwhelmed and often service at the restaurant or pool was very slow. Upper management at these services spent more time berating the servers in front of customers rather than helping out their guests. We thanked the servers for their time and their patience, but this resort needs more employees, especially in the pool area. Two bartenders is not enough coverage for a bar that has two needed locations. The upper management could stand to be friendlier.

We will not be returning to the Barcelo and we would not recommend this resort.

Room Tip: Choose a different resort. There's your tip. Might I suggest the RIU?

Very nice hotel and one of the best all-inclusives. Property is well maintained, clean, we stayed in one of the updated rooms. Swimming pools are clean, beach is very sandy- no stones. There are no beach umbrellas, only palm trees what is unusual for properties in Mexico.Sometimes it is hard to hide from the sunny sky. There is a pier - fun for the family by watching fish and swimming among it, nice corals not far away. Restaurants are good, but not Mexican - servers in it have been not of the most polite. The only complain about restaurants- they try to sell you their bottled wine so bad - it becomes too pushy. Food in buffets is average- of course, you will find something to eat. We have an upgraded package for vacations- but not all of the group members received correct wristbands (fault of Funjet), so after changing them to the right ones we had some problems at the Colonial or Tropical Buffet - every time we walked in , one of the servers had to go with us to the manager's desk to clear that we are allowed to eat there. Would stay there again(after construction is over - too many machineries are working - try to think about clean air at that time).

Room Tip: Second floor - nice view, less traffic.

Well this was; as the title says, the best all inclusive I've had in years. I have visited Egypt, Crete, Rhodes, Maldives, Jamaica and Antigua on all inclusive and this was by far the best.
The trip started off with a 2 hour delay but we then left as rescheduled. We had the Dreamliner and this was so spacious. We did have the premium seating and booked our seats to ensure we were together before leaving. The service on board was exceptional and the flow of drinks was a little too attractive.
On arrival at the airport we were greeted by the rep who directed us immediately to our transfer and we left once the bus was full, nicely air conditioned and a not too in your face guide by the rep during the transfer.
The Barceló was the first stop and took just over an hour to get there.
The welcome at reception was low key but pleasant and we were dealt with efficiently by friendly staff. We got to the room and it turned out to be a TWIN room!!! On calling reception and complaining politely we were guaranteed a double bedded room the next day. This was probably one of 2 negatives I will comment on. The next day we had to check out at 12 and then go back at 3pm to check back in………. once this hassle was over we got on with exploring the resort. This is actually 5 hotels on one sit and has about 2500 room overall.
Each hotel has its own pools, restaurants and the 2 long stretches of beach are shared. One end (north) of the site was more populated by families and lots of kiddies, there were 2 waterpark styled pools which must have been heaven for these kids and families, not so much for those seeking a quieter couples/singles holiday.
The south end, Maya Caribe, was much quieter, though there were some wedding groups who enjoyed the cocktails a little more than expected and couple of times the pool bar became loud and a little annoying, but this only happened a couple of times and I suppose the live and let live motto applies here. The pools were enormous though and a quite spot could be found without too much difficulty.
The hotel did have quite a bit of construction going on right at the south end of the resort; this was probably quite disturbing for those in the rooms near the site. The other area was near the water sports centre where they are building another restaurant. The noise did carry with the wind on the beach but the expanse of beach was quite impressive and it was relatively easy to find space away from the noise. The number of sunbeds on the beach far out-numbered people staying on the beach.
The staff in, all the restaurants and bars, were very polite and happy to serve. The restaurants were exceptional, you had breakfast in the main restaurant and if you hit this at the wrong time you could end up queuing for a few minutes before being shown to a table. The food and juices served at breakfast was top notch and I could not fault the offering or the quality being served. For lunch/snack we had the main restaurant and then the Rancho Grande a grill restaurant by night and Captain Morgan’s, a Mexican specialty by night. Evening times only; we also had Don Quixote a Spanish restaurant. The policy is that on arrival you are given 6 vouchers/coupons which you can use to book these restaurants. There is no extra charge except for the bottles of wine if you decided to not have the house wine. The food in all 3 additional restaurants was great during the day where they served, pastas, burgers, salads, various grilled meats and fish, and egg station, French fries, ice creams, desserts, quesadillas and more than I can recall.
The evening meals had a reasonable offering and the food in all was as I keep saying, first class. The Rancho Grande Steak house offered some of the best steaks I’ve ever had. The Mexican was tasty and the spicy sauces all come on the side so you can test before succumbing to too much jalapeno sauce!! Men do have to wear long trousers and shoes, which was pretty uncomfortable on the humid evenings.
The grounds of the resort were constantly being maintained and cleaned, the only mess there was that left by ignorant guest who just couldn’t be bothered to take a few steps towards one of the many rubbish bins.
There are quite a few iguanas around some small and then some large ones, they do come up to the restaurants as they obviously sense the food which guests try to feed them, this is a little annoying as it is clearly expressed not to feed them!! All the outside restaurants have netting all around them to stop the birds flying in and making themselves a general nuisance.
Evening entertainment, for those who wanted it was held in a massive theatre, the shows were amazing, the ones we stopped to watch and catered for all tastes from Karaoke in-front of 600 odd people to a circus night a variety night and so on.
The rooms was very clean and a decent size too. The air con worked well but we tried not to use this and keep to the fan which only worked on max! But that was good for us. The patio doors have the option of a mosquito panel to have the room open without the risk of being bitten to death. The drinks in the fridge included soda’s, water, juices and beer and this was all part of the all incl. deal.
All in all, I would go back and probably will soon. This is a fantastic place and is located 20 mins from Playa del Carmen by the Collectivo bus and 30 mins from the Tulum Mayan ruins. Also if you feel adventurous and want a special experience you have the Rio Secreto Cenote at 15 mins from here too.
I hope this helps you in deciding on your choice in Mexico and Enjoy wherever you end up.
