“Can I go back nowwww?"”
Reviewed 25 January 2010

Stayed at the Barcelo Caribe in Dec for 10 nights. As luck would have it we had incredible weather. Will try write as much as I can remember here so I may be here and there with the review so bear with me if I am hopping around with advice lol.

We are in our 40's and love traveling and have done punta cana, cabo, puerto Vallarta etc as well as the r.m. several times. This was our first time to try out the barcelo and we loved it. We usually choose an all inclusive and beach is our priorty when choosing a place followed by clean and secure and then food choices.

we were booked at the beach and caribe thru funjet vacations but unfortunate for us at the time the beach was completly closed while we were there so we didn't get a chance to try it out. Dang guess we will just have to go back.

we were placed a the caribe in sayil building. and thought it was a great location as we are total beach people and found this to be a good point to be at. we weren't concerned about being close to the lobby.

rooms had recently been updated with fresh linens pillows and an awesome mattress the best I have ever had in Mexico including the adults only resorts we have tried. New , flat screen tv in room. The fridge was useless as it's stuffed inside a little cubby hole w/ a door and no air to circulate and let the fridge work. Fridge was never cold in our entire stay however the ice machine was near our room so we kept soda and beer in the ice bucket and were fine.

The maids did an "ok" job in our room nothing special...most days they forgot the washclothes and we would have to flag them down in the hall later in the day for some. Each day they either forgot a bottle of water by the coffee machine or the coffee itself so again we flagged down a cart and got some. One day walking past the cart we helped ourselves to about 5 bags of coffee put them in our dresser drawer for the days they forgot. We love our coffee in the morning and easily used two bags a day. Coffee maker in the room, two chairs and a table on the balconey. We utilized the balconey each a.m. and loved the birds and other critters that were there to watch while enjoying our fresh brewed coffee.

Big robes in the room nice to have. Slippers provided were kinda useless. Shampoo and soap in the shower but no conditioner. Hair dryer in there mounted to the wall. Suffiecient but not if you have long hair ladies. Takes forever. Wash clothes good luck with this, they are nice if they remember to leave them. Towels were brand new fluffy and large. Large closet with lots of hangers and the safe that was keypad programmable in the closet. Use it.

the gym had awesome cardio equipment and was very clean etc but while we were there at least for some reason they had the music just ridiculously loud and I mean loud, loud loud.. Just techno beat pounding loud that some people came in and walked right back out. seriously you couldn't even carry on a conversation with the person on the equipment next to you. It totally drowned out my mp3 player with music I like listening to. hopefully management will make them tone this down I am all for music but this was out of control. free weights area was kinda open air with no ac but very nice stuff. overall great gym area. the sauna steam bath area very nice and right by the gym.

captain morgans ahh it is our fav. great little place for a late breakfast if you are a late riser or early lunch as it opens at 10:30 and it's the only place we ever did eat for lunch during our entire stay. Yes, do plan on or expect to put on a shirt guys and ladies a coverup as you cannot go in there barefoot and drippy from the pool and expect to sit on the fabric chairs etc. We laughed as people were dripping wet on the tile and looking like dughh at the poor manager when he says "sorry, you cannot come in here like that". They will ask you to observe the signs and rules posted to be wearing these.

Also don't expect to fix a glass plate of food inside there, or anywhere on the resort and take it out of the dining area by the pool it's not happening and dugh it's because of the glass in the pool is a bad idea thing and also the problem with birds and critters when you take food out of this area. I saw some people getting huffy with the management when they asked them to please dine at the table instead and they didn't like that, get over yourselves people can you imagine the mess they would have if everyone just took food whever they wanted. nuff said.

beach ahhh wonderful I would go back soley for this reason.

the grounds are beautiful and lots of hard working people make this happen. while we were there they had the ground done up wonderful for the Christmas Holiday. there were thousands of palm trees decked out with lights breathtaking. They did an outstanding job decorations everywhere. Big huge trees in the lobby etc

love the hammocks near the pool and beach great way to catch a breeze or relax in the evening with the ocean as your background music.

dining . yum. we loved captian Morgans for lunch for dinner we did mostly the buffet which was always good with plenty of beef, fish, pork or chicken choices along with pasta bars, salad bars, fruit bars, bakery bars, dessert bars, etc. if a person has nothing to eat here you are never going to find anything anyway sister. Free flowing champange at every meal and I mean every meal. yum. Did the don quioxte for dinner one night. great atmosphere and wonderful wait staff and meal. Now men, on the website it will tell you that long pants are required for these dining places, also on your reservation ticket they will show you that it says right on it "long pants" required so don't show up for your 7:00 p.m. sitting in shorts because they will ask you to go change! We sat in the lobby and watched moron after moron play dumb and give the cute little hostess grief when she was just trying to do her job. Wear the long pants here and the other reservation places or just go to the buffet. SImple. And yes, you can wear shorts to the buffet.

we toured the colonial and tropical and palace for something to do and for some fresh air and exercise. We found all of them wonderful but we liked the beach caribe area the best for the beach and the fact that the majority of sports and activities were not happening here it was more low key. we like that. we watched a couple weddings a day on our little stretch of beach.

we cracked up about the music choices at the caribe pool there would be cat stevens of all people playing and maybe john denver? then a filthy dirty rap song would follow strange choices and didn't really flow. not really a tropical vibe of music by any means.

The e team did a good job of involving those who were interested with pool bingo, water polo, water volleyball etc...most of the beach game action was down by the colonial tropical tho if you are looking for it. Nice Tennis courts on the grounds as well as mini golf and a soccer field.

the lobby bar was great all the young gals saw your drink getting low and here came another. great place to hang out before and after dinner to people watch and listen to the fountains etc. we loved Oscar who worked here and also upstairs in the Sports bar. the sports bar is like a hidden treasure. Adults only and there is pool, air hockey, cards, football on the flat screens etc...it's upstairs from the area where the tours are booked and the internet. shh hidden treasure with oscar there. haha

internet grr it's $3.00 for 15 minutes and it's slow and they charge it to your room. you have to use all 15 minutes at once or lose it. you do not get a code like other resorts where you can buy time and just log in and off etc...use up your minutes when you want. it took awhile to log in and connect etc.. and that burned up like 5 minutes alone of the time I paid for. there also is a phone over by the Don Quixote that sells phone cards. $20.00 us for 20 minutes fast connection and really not that bad of a price. a buck a minute. do not use the phone in your room if you are on a budget very expensive to connect from there. be smart buy a card with $20.00 cash right out in the lobby area!

Lobby gift shops were nice and really not that bad of a price. There is an entire shopping plaza over by the Colonial and a few gift shops over by the pier.

use the collectivos $2.00 per person to PDC each way! lots cheaper than taxi's. They run until about 11 p.m. shopping in pdc is good and they are way down in biz so they are willing to make a deal.

take a collectivo to Akumal bay and swim w/ the sea turtles. $2.00 per person each way for the van. it will be a five minute walk from the highway where you take the steps over the highway in but was a great deal! have lunch at the lunch counter for authentic mexican food for under $8.00 us per person. you cannot buy beer at the lunch counter just go next door to the super market buy it while they are cooking your meal and enjoy. It's common.

have a great vacation. don't forget to bring a stack of ones $$ and tip where you find good service and don't hesitate to fill out the survey cards on the checkin desk of the front counter. we did and always do. Definelty give credit to those you feel are due.

Front desk gals were just ok. We had a nice gal who was just learning her job check us in but a few other times we had to use the front desk for various reasons and I have to say for such a top notch resort these gals were not all that friendly, not that I expect them to be gushing but a smile and "how can I help you" or "how is your stay" or "how is your day" etc...is pretty standard and goes a long way. Nope..nutting like this from them nor the young guy who actually was rude.

There are self serve Beer stations, great idea and Tequila Stations even better idea lol. A mixer of dajuri slushy stuff with out alcohol then you add your choice of rum or tequila. Love it.

If the barcelo folks are reading this manager Samuel in the restaruants was very good as were his waiters: Juan, Bellasario, David and Freddy. Favorite waiter/bartenders: Oscar and Lilianna.

My wife and I stayed here for 7 nights. It was our first vacation like this, so we have nothing to compare it to. I must say, the reception was fantastic, the front desk service was very good-despite the other comments i've read-, and yes, it was difficult to get reservations for the a la carte restaurants, but there are a lot of people on this resort. This place will make it very easy for me to book my next vacation. The buffet was always good with something different everytime we visited. Abil, our server was fantastic! He may even have bought a new house with the tips we left him. The rooms were good and room service was good. For those of you complaining about your rooms, maybe you should get out of them and enjoy Mexico and the resort a little more. You didnt pay all that money to sit in your room. The resort is BEAUTIFUL! Anyways, I am in the process of booking a 3 night stay there now, and have committed to going back to Barcelo Beach/Caribe at least twice a year. They got me hooked!

I read this blog prior to my stay and was cautiously optimistic because of the negative comments; I was pleasantly surprised by the overall experience. I agree that the front desk service needs to be improved, in particular they should provide a more detailed map of the room or ideally the bellboy should take you to your room with the luggage as this billed as “4 ½ star” resort.

The room and the grounds were very well maintained. The room safe worked well contrary to other posts, and the air conditioning worked well particularly if you keep the ceiling fan running at a slow speed to help air circulation.

We found the food to be very good with the exception of the “Rancho Grande” steakhouse where the steaks were wafer thin and not up to North American standards. The buffet was actually better than the steakhouse and changed their menu daily, this was much better than the average all inclusive or cruise ship buffet.

The need to book the selective dining on arrival is a chore with line ups, we only found out later that there is a concierge desk at each block of rooms that can also do this without a lineup. We paid extra for 2 dinners and both were worth the extra $15 -20 charge, the Brazilian Rodizio Steakhouse at the palace was of the same quality as a $150 dollar meal in Canada. The house wine is drinkable – not great, and they overcharge massively for their bottled wine selection.

We liked the variety provided by the 5 resort in one area concept and did not find the beach overly crowded allowing that we there for one of the busiest weeks of the year between Christmas and new year. Beaches are not as crowded as the Mediterranean on the average summer day. You should look elsewhere if you want an intimate holiday on a deserted beach.

The entertainment is not up to the quality of Las Vegas shows or the cruise ships but is a lot better and more varied that most of the all inclusives that we have stayed at in the past.

Overall we felt that the hotel lived up to it’s 4 ½ star billing, we will go back as it is ideal for a quiet lazy week and escape from the cold. There is enough variety of act ivies and food choices so that you do not have to leave the compound.

The Barcelo Maya resort is five quite large hotels that share a beach and other amenities. The resort is all-inclusive, with most of the dining buffet style. For our five day stay we received coupons for two of the many a la carte restaurants. Unfortunately, despite seeking reservations on our arrival, only the Mexican restaurant had a vacancy and that was at 9:30 Jan. 1. It was pretty clear the staff had had it by then and wanted us out as soon as possible.

On the other hand, the buffets were varied and of high quality. In fact, the food was some of the best, day-in and day-out that I have eaten in perhaps 15 trips to Mexico.

The staff also is very helpful and friendly, with the bizarre exception of the front desk.

Regarding the resort's size: the property is very large and it is easy to get lost. The provided map is minimally helpful and signage is sparse. When the hotel is well-occupied, as it was for New Year's, beach chairs and seats in the entertainment venues are very hard to come by.

The resort is especially family-friendly, with lots of play areas and other activities for children.

In summary, we ate well but not in venues of our choosing. We felt crowded much of the time. While we enjoyed our stay we would not ever return.

It was OK stay. We had a good deal so it was right on money but with regular price I'd though we didn't get what we paid for.
Pro's:
The best part is it's association (though limited) with four other Barcelo hotels - it seemed like hotel property was enormous - we haven't traveled even half of grounds.
Christmas decorations were absolutely astonishing, magic sight,
Food was pretty good and different every day.
Beach is great for little kids and for those who afraid deep places.
Con's:
Air conditioning in the room was noisy and not quite outdated.
Snorkeling in the area sucks and nowhere near of the Holguin on Cuba (though there are tours available).
WiFi Internet is not free - I have no idea why it is that, when even small coffee shops can afford it.
If extra person stays in the room and you are missing some bedding - you are up for a long negotiations unless you know how to say it in Spanish. I am surprised why employees wouldn't know English words for the hotel items.
During a check-out guy on a reception tried to cheat me for an extra dollar when I was paying for a phone calls (mind that calls to a local cell-phone is 9 times more expensive - they don't tell you that).
From our encounters with hotel stuff most people were helpful, few useless and couple - completely inappropriate, which you wouldn't expect for this kind of money.
Half of a waiters in a buffet not really up to the work.
There are just two a la carte restaurants available for Caribe guests - and you will have to pay extra $15 per person for 5 others.
I would imagine that place will be incredible boring for teenagers younger than 18, unless they enjoy just laying on a sun.

We loved our stay at Barcelo Maya Caribe! The food was fantastic at the buffet plus we also had the opportunity to eat at the seafood, Spanish and Italian restaurants. Make reservations as soon as you arrive for the restaurants. We were not there at a peak time (around 50% occupancy according to the newspaper) so there were always lots of deck chairs and beach chairs available. The beach was wonderful for walking along. We took the collectivo (local bus) to Tulum and to another beach area. You just need to stand out at the main road and it stops to pick you up. Also took the collectivo into Playa del Carman for some shopping - be prepared to be harrassed by the shopkeepers but they are willing to bargain.
The resort was incredibly clean at all times and staff were very helpful and friendly.
The only thing that wasn't great was the nightly entertainment. It seemed to involve more audience participation than actually being entertained. Otherwise, the holiday was perfect and we would definetely return.
