Barcelo Maya Beach Resort was truly a reflection of the good and the not so good detailed in the reviews. From the reasonable perspective of a family of 3 including a teenage girl, the good is all what you read about so let’s look at the darker side. We stayed at the Caribe Hote, one of the five hotels on the Barcelo site. Starting from what I think is the lower end, Maya Beach, Maya Caribe, Maya Colonial, Maya Tropical and the Palace. Upon arrival at the hotel, we diligently booked our restaurants for our evening meals. Full bookings meant we could only eat out 3 nights out with limited time options. One of the meals was an upgrade, the Japanese Restaurant, well worth it! We found that the ping pong tables and volleyball court were too limited in numbers. The excursions are expensive; we only did 2 local Cenotes on our own: Eden Gardens and the Kantunchi Eco Park (www.kantunchi.com). There are actually 3 Cenotes across the street, the Kantun Chi, Crystalline and Eden Gardens. Kantun Chi overcharged us 20$ US each. But do not miss out on the Eden Gardens, it is a beautiful site. Someone recommended the visit of another Cenotes between the Barcelo Hotel and Tulum, called Dos Ojos. Back at the Hotel, we also found the waiting time at the bars too long. In our seven-day stay, 4 days were yellow flags and 3 red flags. So be warned that the sea is rarely flat. The access to Internet... remember 56 kb?..
If you can appreciate Mexico for its beauty but also for its differences, you will likely not have more complaints then we did. Remember the do’s: book your restaurants with your hotel concierge upon arrival, return daily to him to book empty nights, drop by at the restaurants without reservation and hope for no-shows. Use a private transportation service, as we did – www.cancuntransportationfamar.com, you will be pleasantly surprised from the right beginning. At $130 US for a total of 2.5 hour drive, it is good piece of mind – it is well worth it. Arrange to pay every purchase in Mexican pesos, not in US $, you will end up saving bundles. Windy days are good for excursions and you can walk the beaches the next day and collect sea shells. Make every effort to speak Spanish; Mexican will not let you down. An 8-hour work shift provides a lucky Mexican $20 US, so tip a 1$ or 2$ or more as often as you can.

The Barcelo Maya Caribe was great!!!
It is an hour bus ride from Cancun Airport.
The food was great but certain dishes tended to be cold which would be one of our complaints. The rooms were very clean the bar fridge gets filled every other day.
Modelo Canned Beer, Coke, Sprite, Bottled Water, Juice etc.
There are free bottles of water available all over the resorts
Corona and Corona Dark on Tap all over the resorts. It was cool because you are able to serve yourself in all of the restaurants if you wanted.
The 3 resorts are huge there is a shopping mall in the middle that has a free bar.
$15 cab fare or there is a bus to Playa Del Carman for $2 every few minutes
We were there for New Years eve and they put on quite a spread. Lobster Tails, Prime Rib, Lamb, Several types of Fish. All of which were fantasic.
The servers do not speak much English but they were very friendly and the service was excellent.
The shows were ok the mexican music got annoying but the Michael Jackson show was fantastic.
We were give 3 passes for a la carte restaurants but they were all booked for the week so that was a bit disapointing. I would have like to have tried the steak house or the italian restaurant but the buffets has a very large selection of all types of dishes
The beach was huge and very clean. Bring a mask and snorkle there is a reef that you can swim to. There were so many different and cool looking fish and you don't have to go on a boat.
We went to a Sandals two years ago and it was easily comparible but the Barcelo is half the price.

My wife and I stayed at the Barcelo Maya Caribe resort over the Christmas break in December 2010... We loved it.

The resort was extremely clean, well maintained and modern, despite being about 10 years old. The resort is very large, but easy to find your way around. Check in was smooth and fast.

The rooms were relatively modern. The rooms have flat screen tvs and are well maintained. The showers heads had excellent water pressure (I hate low-flow showers in hotels).

We found the buffets to be better than the a-la-carte restaurants. We had a selection of 3 restaurants to go to. We tried the Spanish restaurant, but weren't impressed. The staff were great and very friendly, but the food selection on the menu is a bit limited. On the other hand, the buffets are very large with lots of food selections and the staff were always making sure to replenish empty trays. Every night had a different theme which made every night's dinner unique.

The Maya Caribe and Maya Beach resorts had the best beaches. The entire resort has white sand, but these two resorts have swimable beaches. The other hotels had lots of rocks on the shore which make them unswimable. However, for those who enjoy pools, the pools are huge with a swim-up bar. There are also pool areas for kids, which is a great idea.

The nightly entertainment was outstanding. The resort brought in professional acts to perform. We've been to resorts where the performers are in-house entertainment staff, not here. The performance centre had professional lighting and sound, and the acts were all amazing - different show every night.

We've travelled to various resorts in Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Mexico. This is the one resort we would come back to again. However next time, I would stay at the Barcelo Tropical or Colonial hotels, only because they are a bit newer, but thier beaches are not as good as the Maya Caribe.

Don't believe the bad reviews on the food. I travel a great deal for my job and eat in some of the best resturants throughout OH, PA, and NY. The quality of the food throughout this entire Resort is cosistently great. If I have one comment on the food, it would be that on cool days the plates are cold and it zaps the heat out of the food quickly. The selections are many. If you can't find something to satisfy your taste buds there is something wrong with you.
The staff is super friendly and very accomodating. The hotel and grounds are immaculate. The beach and pools are clean and beautiful beyond belief. A couple suggestions for you that I learned on my first visit... (yes we are going back).... #1.. Don't rent a car unless you have plenty of extra money or need it to do a lot of sight seeing. The cost of the rental seemed reasonable at little over $200. for 9 days, but after taxes and insurance it was almost $550 for a sub compace (junk). I would not rent again and especially from ALAMO... JUNK CARS and a dump of a facility in Cancun.
#2. I would not buy the extra upgrade package for the exclusive resturants. It seemed like the same food in they serve in the buffetts. Also the service was poor and the food in 3 out of 5 of the resturants was cold compared to the buffet. I will say that Captain Morgans and the Steakhouse were by far our favorite. I would pay to eat there again.
We had no problem and not for one second felt unsafe inside or outside the resort. Even when we wondered around in the little village shops. People were very friendly and helpful. I'm from Cleveland Ohio area and feel much more concerned for my safety there.
Oh, one last thing I would do differently is pack less clothes and just buy a couple more T shirts there and take my best camera not my little cheapie.
For you FISHERMEN AND WOMEN, I would not recommend Captain Rick's Fishing Charters which we booked out of the resort. The cost was reasonable, but the captain and first mate were anything but friendly. Once we got on the boat they treated us like we had some kind of disease, not to mention we only caught three little fish, two of which we used for bait. Their equipment was second rate and in fact didn't even have enough rods for everyone on board. WHAT A JOKE THEY WERE. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY... Captain Rick needs to talk to his boat captains about their attitude and inspect their boats for proper equipment. My wife and I have been to many vacation places and this one is top of the list and a MUST DO AGAIN.... THANKS BARCELO KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK...

Wife and I just got back from Barcelo Maya Caribe resort and loved it. The Caribe/Beach, Colonial/Tropical; and Palace are all very nice and share two big beautiful beaches in tranquil bays, and the same water sports. European and some US guests. We preferred the more natural jungle vegetation in sections of the Caribe/Beach and the fact that unlike the other Barcelo hotels adjacent, the Caribe/Beach lobby, buffet, and theater were open with breezes flowing through. We asked to be moved from the first floor to get a balcony and were accomodated. Pros: buffet food is ok and large selection. Food, drinks, and most water sports including hobie cat sailing are included. Room was nice though no water view. Resort has good snorkeling off pier or in corner of swim area near pier. There are dive boats as well. You dont need to leave the resort to see tropical fish and the occasional turtle. Theater shows were fun though way too loud. Temperature was ideal though water was a little cool. Was fine with bottled water from resort. Staff was usually very friendly. Cons: Check-in was slow, buffet food was mixed quality. Restaurants were heavily booked up for the week, though tables were empty! Theater shows were way too loud!! Could only get a sailboat for 1/2 hr at a time. Got crowded just before Christmas. A few items like wifi/internet and beachside coconut drinks were not included for some reason. Concierge in our building was never at her desk! Had to wait on line for booking sailing. In summary, its a gorgeous spot and all inclusive resort with fun for the whole family and no reason to leave the resort to go anywhere. Just find a hammock and pina colada and enjoy!

After reading many reviews about the Barcelo we booked our trip for Dec 10-15th. We initially were in a King regular room with the all inclusive use of the Maya Caribe and Maya Beach but upon arrival upgraded for an additional $250 (for the 5 nights) for an ocean view room with premium alcohol and food/ala carte use. This meant we could have any alcohol we wanted (with the regular all inclusive you could only have local alcohol) and we could eat at any of the resort buffets, grills or restaurants (except the Palace) With the upgrade we could also eat at a restaurant instead of the buffet every night instead of just one night for our 5 night stay. Let me say the resort is impeccable and offers a large variety of activities including 2 theatres, spa, gym and child/teen programs. The beaches were beautiful with a mile of sand and sun and no problem finding lounge chairs in sun or shade. Snorkeling off the pier was amazing, and you could kayak, as well as do a number of other water activities for free. There were numerous pools throughout the resort and my only complaint for the resort is that they were not heated and the water was cool. The bars were plentiful, and we took large travel mugs so we could take drinks to the beach and not have to go back often for refills. The food was overall very good with a great variety, the only grill we did not like was the Capt Morgan Grill which was really not good. The restaurants we ate at had great service and the food was also very good. The service we experienced was excellent, language was sometimes a problem but we were moslty able to bridge that. I would definitely recommend this resort to anyone, we loved it and will definitely go back!!!

My 13-year-old daughter, myself and 10-year-old son stayed here spur of the moment after our Costa Rica trip via Mexicana Airlines was aborted (Mexicana is in reorganizational bankruptcy).
[Flew Spirit Airlines. YUCK. They came with the package I bought and would have paid extra for better airline. They charge you for EVERY bag brought on board.]
Luckily, in January 2011, the time-share people in the Cancun airport (blue-shirt guys) will be removed from their primo location just inside the exit. Sweet deal for these scumbuckets, meanwhile, the legitimate guys outside have to wait for you to come out to transport you to your hotel.
Back to Barcelo Maya-it is a lovely location and very large property, all along gorgeous white sand beaches with crystal blue water, palm trees and plenty of reclining chaise loungers. Staff generally very friendly, but not very specific when being asked about amenities, times, inclusions, restrictions. Some of it seemed a language barrier, so if you know Spanish, it's a great help. Times are all suggestions, and there is a lot of homework you need to do to get the most from the resort including Restaurant reservations and their locations, water sport lessons and reservations, and lists of activities for the day and their locations. The adjacent property lines are not clear, and the grills and bars may not be included in your particular resort. Just ask, and you'll likely get the correct answer. If not, they'll charge your room, but first ask to see your ID bracelet.
The resort has great pools, great tennis courts with towel and cold water service, mini golf, putting, a small game room with ?Nintendo?, snorkeling including a coral reef with fish and manta rays (careful!), kayaks, wind-surfing, catamarans, rentable jet-ski's, scuba trips off-property (in pool they have scuba trials to see if you'll like it), a theatre with live performances and movies, a lovely church near the shops (ask for this location - it may be a few days until you find it, otherwise), a disco (didn't go), some dance lessons by pool daily, large outdoor chess board, kid's playground and splash pad, beach-side massages for fees (you may be able to barter when they are slow). My kids particularily loved the slushies at the lobby every day.
Great place if you love all-inclusives but I suggest leaving property if you want cultural experiences.
