“Definitely need to come back!”
Reviewed 1 February 2014 via mobile

Absolutely fantastic vacation and my reasons why are:

- huuuuuge clean sandy white beach. A definite advantage. Not overcrowded, you get a chair without having to wake up at 7am and racing against other beach-goers.

- beautiful and extremely well maintained hotel grounds with pools, hammocks, fountains, romantic walkways and cute tropical-hut inspired bars on every corner for when you get thirsty :)

- attentive and friendly staff (so friendly that a friend of ours even hard a big crush on one of them, but that's another story ;)

- night entertainment was truly....entertaining....you know how sometimes your get those groups that are trying really hard, but only end up getting the applause for effort and because you feel bad not clapping? Well, Barcelo's staff was able to put up an unforgettable show every night!

- good selection of free of charge sports. Kayaks, little sailboats, windsurfing, beach volleyball, fitness classes, basketball, ping pong and beer pong of course....but the last one is given ;)

The resort is really huge, it comprises of four hotels, Barcelo Maya Palace, Beach, Caribe and Tropical - the last one is where we stayed. So if big resorts are not your thing, you may reconsider, but to me it only added to the excitement as I didn't get the claustrophobic feel of smaller resorts and seeing same people over and over again. Also, as I mentioned before, the hotel grounds are beautiful and we never had a dull moment strolling around.

I stayed there with 3 of my cousins for 5 days, one of wich was New Years.
First impression is that the hotel is beautiful and quite big. But then we had to check in... and it wasn't a really peasant experience. We waited for about 20 minutes to do the check in, and when we were done, they told us our room was not ready until 3 pm. Okay, not a big deal, we took our bags with the bell boys and then we headed to the buffet to get comething to eat. Staff on the buffet was great, they were taking plates and serving drinks. Food was quite good, not excellent but not bad and with good variety. Drinks were well served. After our meal we went to get our rooms, it was past 3 pm. We again had to wait at the lobby since the staff was busy, but finally they got us our keys and we were on our way (bell boy was gonna get our bags in a little while they said). So we go to our room, and it wasn't finished yet. Door was open but maid not in sight. We got in, used the bathroom, and we still didn't got our bags. They took another 20 plus minutes to get them to our room. The maid entered the room and stared finishing it. Can't complain about her, lovely lady, chatted with her while she finished. Then we got to explore the hotel. The pools are huge and clean, lots of lounges, swim up bar, beach was "clean". In the sence that there is always staff picking up glasses, but you can see quite a lot of cigarettes spread here and there. Water was beautiful.
The hotel is very very big, wich is good, because after a big meal you can just walk around and "get lost" on the place (you don't really get lost, there are maps everywhere). We took walks at night and it felt like we were the only ones there. Also you get to see a lot of stars.
I think what I'm trying to say is that the hotel is quite pretty and big and I would return just because of that. But, and here is a big BUT, the service is not that good.
After the first day, for some reason, the flipflops were missing (brand new, two pairs we never used) and even when we complained we only got one pair back. I swear the first maid was not the one doing our room the next day. You could tell on small things, like the towels were not properly folded or the bathroom mat was just there where we left it. We didn't got another bottle of body lotion even when we were out of it. Room was clean, but not as neat as with the first maid.
Bartenders are nice and friendly, but it depends on who's asking for the drink the amount of alcohol they put in. (meaing if you are girls, don't expect a well served drink)
Buffet was nice. But they had a "mexican night" and I'm mexican and I'll eat it because it's my kind of food, but I saw a lot of foreginers not quite happy with the menu.
Hotel is clean and you see staff working on keeping it that way all day.
You can walk around the other hotels and check them out. There is also a bus driving around to take you where you want.
Only one 24 hour bar, kind of a bummer and they didn't have much food late at night, unike Barcelo Tucancun.
There is no bar at the beach so you have to walk to one to get your drinks.
There is no free wifi, not even in the lobby so... lot's of 3g usage there.
TV's are old, not LCD.
There is a mini bar with 4 beers, two bottles of watter (1 lt each), some sodas, mineral water, and i think potato chips. Also a coffemaker.
There is also a safe on the room.
Nice balcony with place to put your wet things, couple of chairs and a small table. Nice view of the gardens.
Shows every night, and they are good. Not amazing but not bad and the dancers are good, and so is the staff on the circus night. On the down side, not every waiter there will acknoledge your presence, so we had to go to the bar on the theater to get our drinks. Also, for some unexplicable reason, the waiters will start cleaning up the place BEFORE the show is over so they WILL block your view on the show!
Eveytime you need to go to the lobby for anything, you WILL have to wait 20, 30 even 40 minutes. It happened to us more than once. Only time it didn't happen was at 2 am.
Check out was AGAIN a long wait. We saw a family that was in such a rush because they couldn't finish cheking out and the transport was already waiting for them. So we waited and waited and waited to finally check out...
And finally and maybe the reason I wouldn't stay at this hotel again is that they keep dolphins. I don't know how many, maybe 5. Their pool is SOOOOOO small. We really felt bad for those guys. They don't have enough space and they shouldn't be kept on a place like that. It is really sad.
I did had a lot of fun, and again, the hotel is very beautiful, but the long waits on the front desk, the dolphins and the not so nice cleaning maids will make me think twice about retuning.

Room Tip: If you are someone who goes to sleep early (9-10) make sure your room is not on the side infront of...

We stayed at this hotel from 1/22/14 through 1/29/14 in the Yucatan building closer to the pool. We stayed with 3 other couples, ages 24-34.

PROs: Plenty of activities for the guys such as shuffle board, beach chess, volleyball, ping pong, billiards, bowling, mini golf, tennis, bocce ball, and too many water activities to list. Plenty of chairs and space on the beach and by the pool. Captain Morgan spiced rum was included, which was a nice bonus. Jack Daniels and Absolut are available if you upgrade to the premium club, otherwise you can pay for the upgraded liquor. There is a mini fridge in each room that is included. It was nice to have a bottle of water or soda occasionally without having to go to a bar/restaurant. The four restaurants were delicious. There is free entertainment every night at the theater. The staff near the pool is very motivated to get customers involved in daily activities such as cooking lessons, yoga, water aerobics, beach volleyball, water basketball, water polo, etc. The room was extremely quiet for the most part. There is a night club with dancing that was a lot of fun. Staff is on the floor teaching you how to dance and security is swift in making sure everyone is safe. If anyone gets out of line security immediately escorted them out. There is a bar that is open 24 hrs a day which was perfect for the first night or two while my body adjusted from working 3rd shift.

CONs: Wait staff and bartenders were extremely slow compared to the Barcelo in Puerto Vallarta and there were only a few employees that seemed like they cared about you. Only one couple in our group received a room with a king size bed and that was because they upgraded to the club premium suite. We were told to check back in the morning for a room with a king size bed. We checked for three straight days and were told no rooms were available. After day three, I gave up on my request. Instead we pushed the two double size beds together. The deadbolt lock did not work and our phone cord was disconnected by cleaning staff. It took over an hour and two trips to the front desk for maintenance to respond and fix the problems. The dead bolt was fixed, but then the regular locking mechanism stuck and I had to shoulder the door open the rest of the week. Wash clothes were unavailable all week, and we were told to use the 3'x2' hand towels as wash clothes. The rooms also smelt musty when the AC turned on. Besides the four upscale restaurants (which you need a coupon from the hotel and a reservation), there is no where you can eat and order off a menu. Every other restaurant is buffet style and the food gets repetitive quickly.

The resort is extremely large and I felt that we did not have enough time to do everything we wanted to. We also did a few excursions throughout the week. In my opinion, do not book through the hotel. There will be employees walking around the pool area that will approach you. Their prices were $5-$15 cheaper than the hotel guest services prices. We set up massages, catamaran party boat, and deep sea fishing. I do not recommend deep sea fishing for women or children. The two females that came along on our trip puked for two hours straight. We also took city transportation to Playa Del Carmen to shop at the flea market. The cost was $3 per person one way, or $6 round trip. It was safe and inexpensive compared to a taxi. The transportation picks you up on the major highway just in front of the resort and will drop you off right at the flea market.

BOTTOM LINE: The friends that came along on this trip made the trip. I felt like a kid again being able to play a large organized game of volley ball or water polo. If this trip was just my girlfriend and I, we would look to book elsewhere. Despite the cons listed above it was a positive experience and we would return in the future.

Room Tip: You get what you pay for. Upgrading to premium comes with perks, but I suggest trying to get a room...

We visited this resort Jan 11-20.
We're limited to very few direct non stop flights from our city except for the regulars like punta cana, montego bay, cancun, cuba, and a very small handful of others. We've booked vacations both on-line and through a travel agent however this time, we went through our travel agent and they were able to set us up for a 1 week vacation for much less $$ than we were able to on line with any carrier. Air Canada Vacations - No complaints, great flight both was, and amazingly efficient through the arrivals & departures in the airport. Although the airport transfers are included in the vacation package, as we typically do, we elected to book a private VIP car transport to the Maya Tropical from Cancun Airport.I t was through Cancun Shuttle, booked on line at the Cancun airport website ($75-85 one way per car). Again, the private service, terrific. We were greeted by the private shuttle rep as they held they're sign up outside the terminal, once we identified ourselves to them, they quickly took care of us with personal service, whisked us into the private car, and away we went well ahead of the regular resort shuttle service.

Over the years, we've visited many of the island resorts through the West Indies, Jamaica, and Cozumel as well. We did as much research on Barcelo Maya Tropical as we could prior to departure, and were somewhat concerned about the size of the resort as a whole.
Once we arrived at the resort, we were greeted with champagne, provided fast and friendly service at the lobby check in, and shown to our assigned room without delay.
The room we were assigned was 3rd floor directly in front of the Entertainment Theatre where nightly performances are shown between 9:30 - 10:45. The performances we took in during our week stay were enjoyed however, if you wanted to hit the sack early, and unless you can sleep through a mardi-gras volume party just outside your balcony door, then I'd suggest upon check in, you make sure your room is not facing the theatre. We did request a room location change after two nights and the bell / lobby desk staff very happily moved us into the quieter area overlooking the gardens on the second floor.
We are not travelling to a warmer climate more than once per year but we truly look forward to each and every winter vacation as an adventure. Yes we like to be pampered a bit more the "wiser" we get. We've stayed at what we believe are average & above average resorts, and to this day still hold Sandals Grand Riveria in St Lucia W.I. as the Benchmark that all others are compared to, but here are some quick points on Barceló Maya Tropical:
- The staff - Wow - very hard working and always eager to please. Please tip them (not non-stop or excessively but $2-3 / day for maid, and whatever you feel comfortable with for the staff in the buffet & specialty restaurants), they work incredibly long hours, 6 days a week, for wages that are not great. A couple or three bucks per visit to the buffet waiter is very much appreciated (more if someone like Alejandro in the tropical location buffet is at your service!)
- The specialty restaurants - you receive 4 reservation tags when you check in - we booked at the usual restaurants our first day in, but ended up canceling 3 of them since the buffet restaurants were fantastic. We did visit the steak house, it was above average.
- The beach - very nice. Lots of loungers available, lots of palms @ the tropical section of the resort to get some shade if need be. Unlike sandals resorts, but not unlike many other all inclusive, there are no waiters walking up and down the beach (but the do PU empty cups).
- The grounds - we walked through all 5 of the linked sections of this resort. Fantastic care throughout. The beach changes texture and terrain as you walk along a mile long beach. Bring some popcorn with you fro the tequila bar in the lobby and save a hand-full to toss in the air for the sea gulls at the end of the pier. They are not shy.
- The food (buffet) - far better than we anticipated in a big way. Something for everyone, even if you were a vegetarian. We did try out the Caribe/Beaches resort buffet as well one evening and it may be my imagination, but it was noticeably "less" calibre than the buffet selections at the Tropical/Colonial buffet. I guess you do get what you pay for, but both locations were good.
- The rooms - absolutely no complaints, we had a 3rd floor room and a 2nd floor room s well - both were received and kept very clean. Great showers, large comfy beds, restocked bar fridges with no shortage of beer, pop, juices stocked daily, Air Conditioners were very high quality and efficient.
- Size of resort - after some hesitation pre-booking here at home, once we figured out the best routes to where we wanted to go, it was an enjoyable short walk and we would no longer consider this resort " too large ". If you just had a knee replacemet, you may want to select a smaller more intimate resort until you can without complaint walk at least 2-3 city blocks. There are elevators in the multi-level buildings.
- Drinks - No complaints - Also lots of safe bottled water at any bar or in your room well stocked in the fridge - I didn't over-indulge this trip (maybe age setting in lol) but every cocktail and cerveza was enjoyed. If your on the beach, there's nothing like a warm diluted gritty margarita so bring a sealable thermal mug to keep colder longer and sand out of your glass.
- The swimming - you can rent snorkel equip there - we bring our own. Have an underwater camera with you whether purchased or disposable. Lots of fish (fish food is $1.25 in the gift shop near the beach towel bar), We swam with small sting rays, and best of all, in front of the maya palace we swam with two very large green turtles (40" diameter shells and just as curious about us than we were of them). That was only 50' off the beach, and still just inside the perimeter buoys.
- Extra marine experience - go to Yal-Ku Lagoon in Akumel. Save your money from a "tour" and just work with the bellboy to hook you up with a taxi that can take you right to the lagoon. That's about $20 one way. There are places to eat there, lockers. They want you to use bio-degradable sunscreen if swimming (why else would you be there).
- Sunscreen and other pharmacy goodies - if you think your bringing too much from home, play it safe & bring a little more, or prepare to pay 5 times the price of it on the resort.
- The shopping mall on site between Tropical and Caribe - was larger than we expected. They have everything there that you will find in Playa. Unless your heading into Playa for something else other than shopping, save your cab fare and pay the small premium to purchase goods at the Barceló Mall area. And Barter my friends Barter (my wife is good at it, I am not). You can always walk away and come back later.
- The pools - we are not pool people, but they were lots of them, continually being cleaned by staff, swim up bars, aqua-size classes daily, lots of hammocks and loungers to be had.
- This resort was in general, better than most of the resorts we have visited including Sandals Ocho Rios if that's any kind of perspective comparison.
- Lastly, we would return there again and highly recommend this resort to others..... IF it were not for the "Come swim with Dolphin" enclosure. We are not "tree-hugging vegans" by any stretch but do not believe in the Exploitation of Animals for profit. Just stumbling across this enclosure while out for a walk one evening made us truly sad. The enclosure is very small, you can hear the dolphins breathing heavily as they huddle together, sleeping facing the direction of the ocean in the shallow water of the pool. I have not researched this further but unless someone can prove otherwise that the animals cannot (with a little work) be released back into the wild, for this reason and this reason only, we would not return this resort. Very unfortunate, otherwise a wonderful resort.

Room Tip: Do not get a room placement facing the Theatre. Unless you want your towels / swimwear to have an...

I just returned from a vacation tied into a Wedding. There were 50 people and it was a fun vacation.

PROS: Loved our room. We were in building 72. Ground Floor - looking at the jungle. It was a great spot to enjoy coffee in the morning or a cocktail in the afternoon. We were close to the beach. We never had an issue getting a seat at the ocean or the pool - although there is a bit of a challenge finding shade if you need it. The food at the restaurants was delicious. We had 4 tickets - and booked the first day we were there. If you want to book Japanese show - do it right away - as it is tough to get that slot - and it is amazing. Loved the Italian, Seafood, and would say the Santa Fe was good - not outstanding. Drinks are not bad at all - they make a great cosmo. The blended drinks are standard all inclusive fare. If you want them stronger ask for a side shot to put in. If you want premium alcohol upgrade your bracelet when you get to the hotel - not through a travel agent it is cheaper. We didn't do this and we were fine. The beach is lovely - lots of fish, sting rays - however you may want to wear water shoes as it is a bit rocky. Not unbearable - but just a suggestion. The staff was pleasant, the rooms cleaned quickly. The stretch of beach is long and you can walk and walk. I also liked the fact there is a shopping mall area on the property to pick up a few little things to take home. More expensive than if you leave the property but a good addition.
Obviously the highlight was the wedding. The wedding was on Captain Morgan's beach and then an amazing dinner poolside. The setting was gorgeous (as was the bride and her maids). The people attending to us were attentive and a good time was had by all.

CON - The dolphin enclosure. I wanted to cry when I saw them. They looked so sad at night - and should not be kept in that area. Absolutely NO NEED to have them there at all. I would definitely no support going in and paying money to play with them. They belong out in the ocean - which at night they could hear, because all of them faced that way - almost crying to be out.

We enjoyed our time and would recommend a visit, if the deal works for you.

Room Tip: If you want to see the ocean - get a room higher up. I loved our walk out King Bed Suite looking ov...

First off I want to say I was a little concerned because I had read quite a few bad reviews regarding the beds being very uncomfortable and hard. I must say I had no problem with the beds being hard or uncomfortable and I have a back problem. We found the beds to be very comfortable. The resort and grounds are beautiful and the staff are all friendly and easy to speak to. The food at the buffets are average but the specialty restaurants were very good and worth going to. The drinks were also average and not very strong but we would just ask for doubles and they were fine. The beach is very beautiful but is rocky in a lot of places. The day we got arrived there was a beautiful spot in front of our resort (Tropical) but it was quite rocky. The second day a young girl had moved some rocks and cleared out a path to get in the water which everyone took advantage of. By the third day all the rocks were gone on that section of the beach and it was wonderful, although I don't know what happened to them? There was a nightly show which was different every night and usually entertaining. Had a very nice pool and one of the largest swim up bars I've been to. The only problem we had was that we are not very fond of air conditioning unless it is really hot, which it wasn't. We could not adjust the temperature setting of the air conditioning. We would raise the setting but it would default to the setting it was at. We usually just shut it off and left our balcony door open. My husband thought the resort was to big, which it is very large but I didn't have a problem with it. All in all I would definitely return again. It was the best resort I have stayed at in all our trips to the Cancun/Riviera Maya area.
