Late Review(stayed Feb 2005)
This was my first time in Mexico and fell in love with the country... we've been back many times. The Oasis beach is now gone but the memories remain. I truly enjoyed the friendly staff, the clean rooms, the quiet little beach, the the great food & drinks.
I would go back to this hotel if it was still around.

We had pre-paid reservations at the Oasis Akumal (OA), but when we arrived, they had no rooms, and so gave us a room instead at the Oasis in Puerto Aventuras (OPA). We complained bitterly at the time because we had chosen the Akumal for its reputation for great snorkelling and diving. However, in the end, I have to say I think we were better off at the OPA. We visited the OA later in the week and although the snorkelling was great, the facilities did not look as nice. (The snorkeling at OPA was also excellent, though it wasn't as protected as was the snorkelling at OA, since the latter has a fringing reef about 75 yards offshore.) OA is a much smaller propoerty than the OPA, with not as much to do, so the OPA was better for the kids. (Our 15 year old girl and 11 year old boy both had a great time.) We only had one meal at OA, which was good, but no better than OPA. We didn't see the rooms at OA, so can't compare them, but at OPA we got a very nice large airy room with a great view after we comlpained about the room we were assigned the first night. For our tastes, OPA has excellent food, though not luxurious (but you can buy a lobster dinner for $25, incl wine), and has a very good tequila and anejo rum, neither of which are in the bar at OA. We enjoyed the fact that there was almost always some great Mexican food, not just American stuff. Oasis also gave us a certificate for a free stay at any of their propoerties around Cancun (except the Oasis Grand), and we just made plans to return to the OPA in August. Our request was confirmed within one day. Overall, while I do not condone Oasis's overbooking policy-- which seems to be a clear policy, judging from other reviews--I have to say that it worked out well for us.
