“Perfect Vacation & Wonderful Resort!”
Reviewed 12 November 2009

Our stay at the Catalonia Yucatan was a perfect vacation! We are going back to the Riviera Maya this year, but don't want to go back to the same resort twice in a row. So we're looking for another resort... with ALL of the same amenities and pluses that the Catalonia has!

FRONT DESK: Not overly friendly, but you only deal with them for a few minutes. Not bad. When we first arrived, the manager said "WHAT?? WE DON'T HAVE YOU IN THE SYSTEM!!! NOPE! NO RESERVATION!" ... and he was joking... we realized after a very scary and awkward few minutes. Not really a good joke to say...?? Especially to travelers after an 8+ hour day of traveling.

FOOD: Very good. The variety in the buffets were great. The a la cartes were also very good. The service was good. All who worked in the restaurants were very nice and helpful.

BEACH: PERFECT! A long regular beach part with nice white sand, great for walking on. And the best part - a lagoon. It is gorgeous, a nice place to sit in front of every day and great calm waters. The ocean here was calm and perfect for swimming. The snorkeling is EXCELLENT, right on the resort. Tons and tons of fish to see. Bring bananas or breads to feed them & they will swarm around you. There is also a beautiful pier to walk on.

ACTIVITIES: Beach volleyball, snorkeling, kayaking, etc. They also had bikes you could borrow for free. That was nice. There is a small little town/area called Puerto Aventuras that is a 5 minute bike ride from the resort. There are shops there and a marina with dolphins. It is free to go into and fun to visit!

ROOMS: Rooms were okay. I would suggest they buy alarm clocks or clocks for the room - it's nice to know what time it is when you wake up, or to set an alarm if you tend to sleep in! So I would suggest bringing a travel alarm clock, or your alarm clock from home. The beds are pretty hard - but I always had a great sleep and you get used to it. Nice balconies off of every room. Sliding glass doors onto the balcony. Air conditioning worked nicely.

GROUNDS: Nicely maintained.

SWIMMING POOLS: Beautiful, but a bit cold for my taste. And besides, I much much MUCH prefer the ocean...!!! I spent all of my time on the beach or in the ocean.

WILD LIFE: There were NO iguanas inside the resort grounds. There were some over a fence off the property that you could see... but I never saw one inside the resort, which was nice. There were no other animals either. We only noticed mosquitoes one night, and we were up late right by the ocean. Nothing worth complaining about, though!

NIGHTLIFE/ENTERTAINMENT: When we were there, there were the usual dancing/singing shows in the theater. Those are not my taste, so I did not go to any. HOWEVER, in the lounge, there was a singing act "Lupo and Sylvia." They were WONDERFUL! So talented and interesting and entertaining. We went for their show every night we were there & bought the CD!

If you have any questions at all about the resort, feel free to email me! I will answer your question if I can.

Have been here 3 of the past 10 times I visited the Yucatan and highly recommend it. Great for kids, couples, or just going by yourself for a get away. Close to Telum, Coba, and Playa Del Carmen. It is nestled in a private community off the main highway and the community has a marina, shops, and a few restaurants. Can't wait to go again.

I went to Catalonia Yucatan Beach with my boyfriend from the 12th till the 16th October and it was my first time in Mexico.
This place is so amazing, so exclusive, so perfect that i dont even know where to begin. Theres not even cons, i`ll just leave here some advice that might help: upon arrival we were given room 122, which is on the lower/street level. We were so exausted after a 10 hour flight that we didnt really care. Also what we ddnt know was the that the staff starts working at 6am so at that time all of them were laughing and chatting loud, and passing by our door and balcony which those noisy metal trolleys. So dont take a room on the lower floor. Also the view is non existent. Though the room is standard it has all the comodities you need and it was always spotless clean. It always smelled so good when the ladies finished and they always left those lovely tower art work. Amazing!
The food was oh-my-god-is-it-meal-time-already? :D it was definitly the hotel with the best food i have ever stayed in. Specially breakfast. You have everything there: from churros and pancakes with a few different sauces, freshly squizzed juices with your choice of fruits/veggies, omollets or fried eggs done by the chef in front of you! Fantastic! Im sure we gained a few kilos this week! ;)
We tried 3 of the 4 "A la carte" restaurants: the italian, the mexican and the japonese. The italian wasnt bad, not its wasnt great either. The mexican was a lot of fun (it was my bfriend's bday and they made it really special). But the japonese i definitly recommend: everything about it is unforgivable: the classy atmosphere, the so talented chef (ours was Mario) cooking in front and for you, the ladies dressed like little cute japonese girls. I was a very special night for us, also because it was our last.
Also wherever you go, dont miss the drinks! Im a marguerita fan so i must recommend it. Although i must confess: the quality of them really deppends of the person who made them .We found the drinks in "Margueritas bar" the best.
The hotel gives you plenty of free activities to try: snorkel, catamaran ride, kayak and free scuba diving in the pool. We did them all and obviously we have to recommend them all. Dont miss a close up of those amazing, colourful fish! It is to die for! And to do so go to the rocky passage. Its where you see the most. Also if you like thake a bread roll with you and give it to them. You`ll see rainbow of fish! ;)
We went to the sea a few times but definitly prefered the lagoon: its much more private, it has sand (the beach is rocky and sandless) and you could just sit there with your drink or go for a swim because there are areas where the lagoon is pretty deep.
We havent seen many of the shows. Only had the chance to catch mexican night. Which was pretty entertaining with really talented artists.
Has it was October some of the areas were closed: the disco, the kids area, one of the restaurants. But we rather have it like that! The hotel was pretty quiet and we never had queues for anything!
Our mobile phones didnt work and the cabins were a nightmare! So have plenty of "pesos" with you.
We took an afternoon to visit the centre of Puerto Aventuras hich is basically a 5 minute walk from the hotel (you can also take a bike from the hotel). It is lovely: very pituresque with plenty of little shops and restaurants. Also if you like dolphins you can swim and interact with them there! Great for kids!
Catalonia Yucatan Beach is the PERFECT place to go! Doesnt matter if you are a family, a group of friends, honeymooners, singles, parters! It doesnt matter, just pack your bags and go! Just leave a kilo left to bring the typical sombrero (i bought mine for 20 bucks so dont pay more than that)!
Also we had a visit of a cockroach one morning! But hey its mexico, you gonna see many animals and with the tropical weather and rain they all come out!
The staff was fantastic and we are forever greatful to them for making our stay so amazing!
People, dont hesitate book Catalonia and have the time of your life. Just beware of those "mature" druken americans! ehehehe ;)

My wife turned 30 so I wanted to take her somewhere nice. Researched mayan riviera resorts and the Catalonia came highly recommended. She'd been to the exclusive Bahia Principe Akumal before and I considered this a downgrade but I thought I'd go with the reviews and take a chance and I'm glad I did. She loved it...I loved it, it was really set up for entertainment and laughter. Not stuffy at all...plenty of Euro's in speedo's and plenty of Canadians and Americans as well. Food was ok, nothing special but the location, beach, and most importantly THE STAFF were increadible. We are going to the Mayan again this fall and are seriously considering going back because if we try another place and it doesn't live up (which it likely won't)...we'd be disappointed and we KNOW we wouldn't be disappointed here. Neither will you. It's not a 5 star but it's well worth the money. Check it out for yourselves, lots of vids on youtube as well. Good luck!!

We just came back from Catalonia Mayan Riviera (Catalonia Yucatan) – Oct10, 09
Very good resort. Solid 4 may be 4+
Pro’s:
- Very good resort layout – pools, restaurants, beach, theatre in 2-3 min walk distance; variety of different types of beaches (rocks(waves), little sand entry, nice sandy lagoon); very good location in terms of any trip around; very good service and animation team – very friendly; very good shows; descent basic rooms (without iron and bar, but clean/quiet); very good food (nothing extraordinary, but lots of variety and different every other day), bars and restaurants are very close to the beach and pools; bring you own mask and snorkel if you like do it more than one hour a day(free); bring water shoes
Con’s:
- Lots of sunscream …Manager of the Water Equipment rental (lady) is very rude, actually the only one person at service we found.
Go to Akumal (turtles) for snorkel; go to Tulum ruins (have very nice beach); go to Paraiso Beach (close to Tulum ruins); go to underground river tour (cave river) – HAVE A GOOD TIME!!!

We visited the Catalonia Yucatan Beach Resort for the week between Christmas and New Years, and it was a wonderful vacation.
The food was good, and we were happy with the variety offered with the ala carte restaurants. We didn't have trouble booking them. We had a party of 7, which included 5 adults and 2 small children, ages 5 and 2. We didn't always get our first choice of a night, but we were able to use all 3 vouchers for restaurants. We did Italian, Mexican and Japanese; we especially enjoyed the Japanese restaurant.
Each day we basically planted ourselves in lounge chairs and used that as our home base for the day. We swam in pools, used the kayaks, and rode the catamaran.
One day we walked to Dolphin Discovery in Puerto Aventuras, and another day we hired a driver to take us to Tulum; this was a wonderful excursion.
Yes, the beds are hard, but I was still able to sleep. The room service was good; prompt, thorough, clean rooms. I never saw bugs, and I am thoroughly creeped out by bugs. Rainy season had ended, so perhaps that's why we never had mosquito issues, either.
We were happy with the staff, service, and beautiful grounds.
I was concerned about the rocky beach after reading reviews, but we really didn't have a problem with it. We took water shoes, and just avoided the rocks. No problem. It was great for families with small children. The pools have large sections of shallow water, and we even used some sand toys from the play area occasionally.
I recommended this resort to a friend and they booked it for next spring. I would definitely go back!

Just back from our second stay at the cat rivieria maya yucatan and the second stay was just as brilliant as the first one. Our first visit was in September and before we’d even got home we knew we would be going back and not long after booked to go back for new year. We flew on new years eve and arrived at the hotel about 6pm, check in was fast as we’d done it before we made sure we were first in the queue!! Our room was nice, basic but all you need and clean. The room was always cleaned daily and we have no complaints at all about the housekeeping the do a brilliant job and most days you get a lovely towel art. New Years eve at the hotel must have taken a lot of effort from all staff, a stage was set up on the beach and tables and chairs everywhere there were so many people there. There was a band and dj playing music throughout the night and the staff put on a show and there was an audience involvement show which we had the pleasure of taking part in!! The shows at the hotel every other night are also fantastic they had introduced a new show since last time we were there, the Evolution Show and it is really good. Be sure not to miss the comedy show or music hall they are both absolutely hilarious and had us doubled over with laughter. The food and drinks are all really good. We hadn’t tried the Japanese restaurant before but went twice during this trip the food is delicious and the show the chef puts on is very entertaining. They also have the Italian, Mexican, the grill, snack bar, and 2 buffets. All the barmen are fab and never see your glass empty, it got to the point that we were going to the bar and having our drinks waiting for us without even having to order, (even though sometimes we were wanting something different!!). All the barmen, waiters, waitresses, etc are so nice and friendly. One good thing about mexico now is the smoking ban has come into force so you cant smoke indoors so all the restaurants and disco are smoke free. The animation staff are what makes the holiday so special, there were lots of new staff compared to when we went last time but they are all so nice and go out of there way to get to know you and be friendly. We didn’t spend a lunch time when we ate alone there was always staff asking to join us. The work so hard day and night and barely get any days off and are so appreciative when you take part in their activities. There are so many activities to choose from daily and the crazy game each day is always a good laugh. We didn’t do any trips this time as we had done previously but we went into Playa Del Carmen a few nights. If you pick the right nights to go its really busy and they have just newly opened a coco bongos there which is exactly the same as cancun just slightly smaller. And there are lots of bars and clubs to choose from but be warned some of them are on the beach!! The hotel hires out bicycles and we often went for a cycle round Puerto aventuras all the houses are absolutely gorgeous and so many new apartments, etc are in the process of getting built its such a lovely area. Also the beach further along from the hotel has no rocks on entry so is a lot easier to get into without hurting your feet! Again the holiday was absolutely fantastic and we are considering a third visit we love it so much!! To see our first review check under the catalonia Riviera maya, you can only put one review up per hotel so that’s why this one is under the yucatan.
