“Absolutely fabulous for snorkelers!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2014

The management arrange for the boat and crew to take you to the new reef for snorkeling everyday day.
Millions of colorful fish can been seen in sparkling clear water with variety of beautiful corals.
We had 2 snorkeling trips every day with private snorkeling guide who showed us many wonderful creatures we would have not seen otherwise.
It was magical!
Food and service and accomodation was a very good value for money.
We have visited twice so far and we plan to come back again.

Arrived back in England today after a lovely holiday at the Siladen Resort and Spa. The accommodation and location were perfect. The dive instructors Stefan and Valentina were especially helpful in ensuring that we got the very best of dive experiences including an amazing night dive - both of them are committed to taking care of all of the guests who dive at the resort.

We would recommend this resort to anyone that is looking for good food, attention to detail and fantastic Indonesian hospitality. Especially good for divers with beautiful coral reefs and dive guides who make sure guests see the best of the reefs.

Having only done a Discover Scuba Diving afternoon elsewhere, we went to Siladen to do the PADI OWD course. Valentina was a fantastic instructor guiding us professionally but always with wonderful sense of humour and despite our ages (60+57) and inexperience we successfully completed the course in five days.

This peaceful resort blends in well with the environment and the bedrooms and public areas are very comfortable without being luxurious. As there is no shower outside the bedroom, you have to rinse your swimming things in the bathroom so a clothes line in the bathroom would be a good idea. This would save taking dripping clothes through the very beautifully wood furnished bedroom.

The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful and the weekend live band was great, playing our '70s and '80s requests! The food was good and well presented. The fish, tuna or marlin, tended to be a bot overcooked sometimes and the desserts a little too sweet but there was always beautifully prepared fresh fruit. Muesli for breakfast would have been a bonus but in general a good variety considering the small resort.

When we went out to do the open water dives, as beginners we felt that we were in excellent hands. The diving expeditions were smoothly operated and the crew were professional and helpful with the equipment; encouragement and patience from the experienced divers on the boat was hugely appreciated. The reefs were all stunning. This resort is geared to divers, though snorkelling is accessible nearby.

Congratulations to Stefan and Valentina who run a smooth and welcoming operation.

Room Tip: Recommend beach front room further away from kitchen/restaurant, if possible.

This was my 2nd time here after a five year absence. What is undeniably excellent is the beauty of the area, the attentiveness of the staff and the quality of the diving and food. I would recommend paying the extra for the beach front rooms since the garden is very sparse and uninspiring.
Vendy on the bar was particularly helpful. He knocked up drinks that were not on the menu and organised a bespoke meal for me on my birthday (one not advertised and clearly available).
Whereas the dive guides are very professional I would prefer it if they tried a little less hard (finding things and then calling you over to look) and performed more of a watching brief. Personally I like to explore at my own pace which I am more able to do in places like Bonaire, the Maldives and the Cayman Islands. In all fairness the way they operate will be ideal for many.
All in all a must for those who love diving amongst the corals.

Room Tip: Go for the beach front rooms it is well worth paying the extra.

Thanks to all of the staff in the resort for making out stay an absolute pleasure. This was our 3rd time in Bunaken to dive, but our first time at Siladen. We would certainly go back as it is the best property we have stayed at in the area. The food was great and very well presented.

Two perfect weeks of diving and relaxing. The staff in the dive centre were superb and knew the sites well. Delly our dive guide even knew how I liked my kit laid out - fantastic! The centre was well run, thanks to Stefan and Valentina.

The blue bathrooms in the rooms are different! nice and clean but perhaps could do with an update. Not a criticism , just an observation,

Our family recently returned from 7 days of diving and relaxing at Siladen Resort. It's difficult to know where to begin to praise and thank Stefan and Valentina; our excellent dive masters, exceptional hosts, and English speaking, plus 4 other languages, resort managers. Communication by email was easy and all our pre-arrival questions were answered professionally and thoroughly, so we felt comfortable traveling 30 hours from the US to Siladen for our first visit to the resort.

I first check Trip Advisor and Scuba diving web sites and their blogs before we begin an adventure and had to chuckle about a past Siladen reviewer who complained about the bathroom towel bar. Really? I guess towel bars are super important to that person. Ours was teak, there were several in the bright blue outdoor bathroom and they held up everything we needed to dry and more! (couldn't resist commenting about that strange review) We had the garden suite, and rooms are modern and charming with good air-conditioning, not too noisy with different fan levels, and decent water pressure in the fun outdoor shower with enough hot water for both of us on most days. A few luke warm showers during the busier times, but it felt great and nothing to complain about. Comfy beds with nice quality linens and fluffy pillows- nothing was musty or smelled in our rooms. Had no problem with the humidity in mid March, but Siladen is in the tropics and it's different than Hawaii so it can be humid in the summer months.

We didn't have any problem with bugs in our room or around the resort and didn't notice anyone spraying, am not a fan of that and if you're sensitive, email ahead of time. The resort's grounds are well groomed, natural, green and huge tree canopies and sweetly lit pathways at night to find your way back to your room. The small island is very safe and the resort employs workers from the nearby village and everyone is very friendly to the guests making you feel right at home. Ask to visit the village school and if you can- squeeze in a few needed school supplies- the 40 elementary students and their teachers will love it. Singapore Airlines lets you take 2 bags each. Dive equipment, swim suit, sundress, sandals, math workbooks and pencils, what more does a traveler need?

The cleaning staff were always friendly, helpful and serviced your room(felt like several times a day) placing chocolates in your room at night and there was even a mini refrigerator full of beer to purchase and free cold bottled water. (BYO bottle to help reduce plastic) We wanted to know how to say a few Indonesian words and the receptionist kindly printed out a list without us asking. The resort might consider leaving a list in the room of the more common sayings for those who want to learn how to say terima kasih, thank you in Indonesian. The lighting in the room seems to have been improved from previous Trip Advisor comments and there's also a decent reading light by each bedside above your pillow that works well.

The resort was almost full, maybe 48 guests total, and the food buffet is served for the 3 full meals, plus we had a wonderful beachside barbecue one evening with Indonesian dishes that were incredible and plentiful. Everything is fresh, but I would like to see a few more traditional fruit juice options offered at breakfast, if at all possible. The homemade pastries and bread are very good and the tropical mousse deserts taste wonderful. Most food and drink has to come by boat and Siladen does a wonderful job balancing that challenge by serving a variety of international dishes like Italian lasagna for pasta lovers. I loved their watermelon ginger salsa they served with fresh grilled fish and have tried to duplicate it twice since getting back home. Cocktails and beer are expensive, but cold and tasty. You're allowed to bring your own- 3 liters per person- check the Indonesian government website. Guests won't go hungry and will find lots of lunch and dinner options; a variety of seafood and meat dishes, green and pasta salads, curry vegetables, steamed and fried rice to name but a few, and for breakfast; egg and omelet stations, yogurt, pancakes, waffles, toast your own wheat or white bread, dried cereals and crispy bacon! You may request something that you don't see as they want to try and please a picky eater. The wait staff brought a pot of steaming hot green tea every morning to our table and I didn't even have to ask. They'll also brew iced tea and this was refreshing to have after a day of diving and before an afternoon nap by the pool. Internet was decent at the lounge and by the pool, we used our laptops, iPhones and Skyped and they were adding Internet to the guest rooms while we were there. Stored our passports in the room's safe, but never carried a room key and felt comfortable leaving our door unlocked as most guests did.

One review mentioned that Siladen is not the Hilton and thank goodness for that, but some guests who are not divers might be expecting a Hilton style beach resort. Visit Siladen's website, email the resort if you have questions and find out about a place before one journeys half way around the world! We saw several families with young children and the resort treated these families with lots of personal attention and care. The beach is nice and clean and there were a few optional tours that we didn't do since we went there for the diving. Our family loved the remote feel, the tropical island charm, which is similar to Bali and Fiji with the wood burres, or guest bungalows/rooms. We do like to kayak and paddle board-don't know if the resort has looked into offering these sport activities in the future. (Hint)

There was live music most nights while sitting at the bar or swimming in the relaxing pool admiring the orange sunset outlining the volcano that looms in the horizon. The website says it's a 4 star resort, but to our family Siladen felt like a 5 star dive resort with a more affordable price than Wakatobi, a variety of friendly guests from different countries and a little easier to get to as well.

This is a top dive resort and our family has been fortunate to experience Fiji, Bali, Wakatobi, the Great Barrier Reef, Ninglaoo Reef in Western Australia, Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. Siladen is among our favorite. We did 13 dives and also squeezed in a Mandarin fish, a night dive and a muck dive. Watched dozens of elusive Mandarin fish zip in and out of the coral at dusk to feed and were in awe of their spiraling ballet mating dance. Incredible photos.

The micro life in Bunaken National Marine Park is amazing, and the Indonesian English speaking dive guides know exactly where to look. It felt like being on a treasure hunt looking into the crevices and walls . The most sea turtle life we've found anywhere, plus colorful and exotic nudibranchs, frog fish, cuttle fish, scorpion fish, crocodile fish, yellow pygmy seashores, spotted rays, blue ringed octopus(can now check that off the dive bucket list), plus a few smaller reef sharks. The day before one guide saw a hammerhead shark. (pretty rare site we're told, lucky guy)

On each dive we had one guide for 2 divers and no more than 8 divers on each boat- the guides are very safety conscious, do thorough pre-dive checks and several in our group got Rescue diver certified and also Nitrox certified while we were there (why didn't we do that sooner???) Top notch classroom for PADI courses and a wonderful salt water pool for practicing or standing in the waterfall. The dive boats are pretty fast getting you to most sites in under 20-25 minutes, clean, have ample room and are covered for good shade or go on top for some sunbathing, excellent dive briefs on land and on the boat too. We brought our own equipment, but 2 in our family rented BC's and dive computers and they were of good quality. Wore 3mm wetsuits and was warm enough for shorties. Dive packages and rental prices were average compared to other resorts, but we did go in the low season and took advantage of the better deals. Visibility was very good, with only one night of heavy rain during the end of our week that made the water a little cloudy topside, so we lucked out weather and water wise.

Bunaken isn't known for its big fish, but makes up for that with very healthy and numerous coral and large schools of tropical fish. Some of the best coral we've experienced. Most of the diving is wall diving and easily doable for all levels of divers. We never felt rushed to get in and out of the water and with Nitrox we enjoyed bottom times of 65 minutes. Stefan printed out a detailed list of all our dives, location, temps, maximum depth noted from our computers and that's helpful to have to record later into one's log book. We were very impressed with the dive crew and suggest you bring cash to tip these well deserving and talented men and women. (can't put tips on a credit card) We were also each given a complimentary spa treatment massage and that was extra special after diving- thanks Siladen!

The tides are tricky and once on the water you can see some trash that has washed out to sea that makes its way into the marine park, but the resort does an excellent job keeping its beaches clean and free from floating trash. You can't ignore it during the rainy season and it does need attention. However, the trash isn't from the Siladen Resort. It's carried by rain runoff from outlying areas and from Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi, which is about 45 minutes away by boat. One can spot it during the rainy season from Dec. thru March, however the trash is never in the dive sites and you don't come up floating in the stuff. Indonesia could do a better job here protecting their ocean environment from land run-off and de-forestation to avoid erosion. You can't blame all the trash problem on them though, one can find plastic floating by with name brand labels from American companies. It would be great to see the international business community lend a better helping hand to the Indonesian people and the marine environment.

We couldn't get enough great dives in and meals too. We were the only Americans at the resort that week, so Siladen really is a hidden gem.
