“Our new "local"”
Reviewed 27 February 2014

Though we diidn't actually stay at The George, we did partake daily for the duration of our week break in the beautiful village of Orton. So for a week this lovely pub became our "local" The welcome was as warm and friendly, as was the pub itself.
Hazel, the landlady,is lovely. She made us feel as if we had been invited for supper every night! From our first lunch of fabulous sausage bagettes to Hazel's curry special we couldn't fault anything. Home cooked food, quick and caring service made every meal there special. The Jennings beer was spot on and yes, we diid sample a few glasses!!
The pub was spotless, and important to me,, the toilets were sparkling! We even left with a parting gift of two special beer glasses, these from a lady who said she had a reputation for not giving anything away! We will definately return for more!,

We travel often and having read many reviews decided this looked like a lovely, quaint, old world style pub/restaurant/hotel. The food reviews were what tipped us in favour of staying here en-route to Aberdeen as dining is part of the entire traveling package for us. Sadly, we didn't get to sample anything for dinner as the restaurant apparently closes at 8.30pm during winter months (9pm in summer). We arrived at 8.40pm and when we enquired about the restaurant, at check-in, we were offered pizza or soup which just didn't appeal at all, so we declined. (It was then suggested that a couple of packs of crisps and a pint would fill our bellies until morning!). We'd read the hype about the local produce and were really looking forwards to a 3 course meal so were extremely disappointed and very hungry but pizza, soup or crisps just weren't what we were expecting!

We'd been on the road almost 7 hours, as we'd been held up by a traffic accident, which meant our journey time had almost doubled and had we known the restaurant closed at 8.30pm we would have stopped at another restaurant on our way to the hotel. We wrongly assumed that having a check in time of no later than 9pm, the restaurant would still be open especially as we've never come across an 8.30pm close anywhere else. Not knowing the area and not wanting to get back in the car, after our long drive, we just went to bed very hungry.

Apart from that, the double room and en-suite shower room were basic but decent enough for one night and the full breakfast was fine. We didn't receive the 'friendly' welcome mentioned by lots of other reviewers but it was polite and courteous.

We regularly visit Aberdeen and were hoping to find a 'gem' tucked away, where we could return to often but sadly this isn't it.

Room Tip: Not a room tip but a very important tip nonetheless! The restaurant closes at 8.30pm during winter...

The George Hotel was a real treat when we stayed in mid September 2013. Our room was spacious and extremely comfortable for four people. It had a recently renovated bathroom and the room looked out over the village. All our bookings and enquiries were responded to quickly and efficiently by Hazel and it was very nice to be greeted by name in such a friendly, welcoming way when we arrived. We would highly recommend the George Hotel to anyone travelling through Orton – a particularly pretty village.

Staff and customers were all very friendly.
The food was lovely, everwhere was clean, the beer was well kept and service was excellent.

We got to spend two nights at The George, one after walking to Shap and the other after walking from Shap to Orton. We had the family room, so there was ample space to spread out and dry our things. The bar is cozy and popular. The food and service were superior.

The hotel is in a lovely village, complete with old fashioned telephone box on the junction out side the hotel. The staff were very friendly, the beer was excellent and the food was fantastic. My only gripe (not really a complaint) was that my room was tiny, and didn't even have a hook to hang a coat. When you're doing the C2C you do need to air coats etc. However, the hospitality of the staff in getting stuff dry more than made up for this omission. Breakfast was also very good.

Room Tip: I think I was in Room 2 -- -try to avoid it if you need space for clothes.
