“Small treat in the village of Orton”

The village of Orton is tiny so it is a suprise to find this litle gem in the middle of it. A fully blown luxury chocolate shop with a large cafe. There is a good range of all kinds of exotic chocolate related treats. You simply choose which ones you would like and they pop them into a box and even add ribbons and gift cards if you wish. Prices start at 6 for £5 so not cheap, but they are all hand made. There is a cheaper selection of small pre-packed chocolate figures such as owls, sheep, cats, dogs etc which are fun and would make great gifts. The shop also stocks a range of sweets, cards, small toys, preserves and loads of other things You can even see the chocy delights being made through the hatch at the serving counter. Can get very busy thoughat peak times/holiday periods but otherwise well worth a visit.

We have visited this chocolate shop on numerous occasions to purchases Kennedy's fine hand made chocolates. Their products rival most fine chocolates produced by the elite chocolatiers. Not surprisingly, they come at a cost but you get what you pay for. They sell a wide range of chocolates and are freshly produced on the premises. The chocolate production which can be seen through a viewing window from the cafe.

The cafe is less impressive although the two free chocolates that came with the bill were a nice touch. The rest of the fair is okay but nothing outstanding. The main big disappointment came with the state of the tables. The cafe was largely empty but nearly all the tables were full of dirty plates and cups left by previous customers. The waiting staff made no effort to clear any of the tables during the entire period of our stay. Service was also very slow.

Stayed near the Lake District with friends recently in a lovely 5 bedroomed cottage in Maulds Meaburn and found this place practically on our doorstep.
The chocolates are all handmade to the highest standard possible in the tiniest of places. The shop offers 92 different individual chocolates as well as pre-packed selections. There is a small giftshop and a wonderful tea room where the food is just fabulous. I'd recommend almost anything but particularly liked the toasted sandwiches and the milkshake which comes in a chilled glass decorated with dribbles of chocolate on the inside. Yum!!
Special mention has to go to the staff who are very knowledgable and patient as it takes a while to complete a selection from the wonderful choice on offer.
If you're a fan of chocolate this place is definitely worth a visit.

I went thinking I would visit a factory, in fact it is so tiny, that that is impossible. But, they have a very informative film running in the café, although you might have to ask the staff to turn up the volume. You can see people working in the factory through glass windows into the café - the same people will serve you lunch or a coffee or tea and serve you from the chocolate counter. Make sure you have a bit of spending money - the chocolates are up there with fine Champagne and worth every penny, and suddenly you understand why Kennedy's supply Fortnum & Masons in London.
Delicious and well worth the cross-country haul to get there.
