Stayed for two nights with Sister and Brother-in-law who had stayed before, and my Husband. We were on a walking weekend. Lovely bedroom, cosy lounge, welcoming friendly staff. We decided to eat in as we knew we would be tired in the evening, food very nice and reasonable choice, nothing to much trouble for the staff. Great place, perfect for our needs, will stay again.

Room Tip: All seem good rooms but state if you want shower or bath.

We booked 5 days at The Knoll and chose the 'Retreat' to stay in during our stay.
the 'Retreat' is an annexe of the hotel, attached but only just. It give you the practicality you need of being in a hotel vs a rental cottage, but the privacy and seclusion of a rental cottage at the same time!

Pros are many with only a few tiny 'cons'..

Best bits:
Beautiful setting, with a country feel. The retreat has it's own entrance and car parking. You can bring your own food, and keep/cook in the mini kitchenette, or order from the main hotel and they will bring it into your room (dining area of your living space!)
You get a kitchenette, bedroom, living space, bathroom and your own hot tub, accessed from a door in the living room.
It's easy to find and all the staff were helpful and very friendly.
It's close to the Lakes but doesn't over look them so bear this in mind. It's a short walk to local amenities and other hotels, but a drive to Ambleside and more tourist-y locations.
The place is clean and tidy and stacked with all the things you'll need while you're relaxing in the Lakes....
You are entitled to a discount on various Lake boat trips, so ask about this! It may change but ours was a 10% discount voucher.

The few drawbacks were that the hot tub area was a little 'pokey' (garden not tended) and while we were there, the neighbours were having works done to their property which is right next door, so it wasn't quite as private as we'd liked but I am sure this was only temporary. The resident dogs and cats of the hotel could be heard scratching or barking at the connecting door to the retreat, as could conversation from the staff occasionally. Watch the entrance to the parking area for the retreat, it's fairly narrow and with a large car, we had to take the entrance very wide to get in.

It's not 'cheap', but if you're looking for solitude and an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life then this is the place for you.

Just what we needed. A quiet spot with a lovely woodland at the back to walk thru. Only a few minutes from Newbie Bridge and Lakeside this is the perfect stay. Aromatic entrance to a cosy (cosy not cramped), lovely hotel. We enjoyed the relaxed feel of this place. Breakfast was a treat - no nasty big fry ups here, quality ingredients some interesting alternatives and absolutely loved the homemade granola.

A great base to explore the lakes district from. Would use again and again......

Room Tip: We had a room at the back it was quiet.

What a wonderful experience to stay at this hotel recommend it to all. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, so welcoming and beautifully clean and comfortable on suite room. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and we were recommend a pub/restaurant up the road ( masons Arms). This was an absolute delight but would also like to try the hotels restaurant next time.
Looking forward to my next visit to the lakes and staying at The Knoll.

A lovely house in a peaceful location, but with a few local pubs and hotels in easy reach for a bit of variety. As soon as you enter, the gentley spiced aroma of the living room wafts into the hallway, and the warmth of the open fire hits you. The rooms are comfortable, attractive and warm in cold weather; the staff are welcoming and friendly; and breakfast and dinner are superb! You need a car to get here, but if you have one then there is no excuse not to visit.

We've literally just come back from our weekend at The Knoll. We walked through the door to the smell of a real coal fire and the whole house was so inviting. Our room was lovely, very stylish but in keeping with the style of the house and was very quiet with a very comfy bed (we had room 1 at the back of the house). The weather was awful so we spent the afternoon at the spa in the nearby 'Swan Hotel' which is free to use if you're staying at the Knoll & the even provide you with towels. We thought we had the best of both worlds as as lovely as the Swan was, we found it far too noisy (kids & school holidays) & impersonal. We were glad to escape back to the Knoll where we had booked a meal in the restaurant. We rarely eat where we we are staying as we like to go out to eat, but the food was superb! Fantastic romantic ambience and a lovely lounge to chill in. They have put a lot of thought into everything. The decor throughout is lovely and even down to silly things like the background music choices and volume. We both loved it and have added to our list of favourite places to come back to!

There are not enough words to describe the feeling of pure relaxation that this beautiful guesthouse and its owners/staff make you feel. As soon as you walk through the door you are enveloped in a homely feeling, sprinkled with a bit of heaven! This is the perfect couples retreat with gorgeous bedrooms, cosy guest lounge with relaxing music and real open fire, and romantic meal in the vintage looking dining room where the food can only be described as sensational. Nothing is too much trouble and with an overwhelming drinks selection (speaking of which I recommend the Shiraz!) its the perfect home from home in a scenic setting. I miss it already and only left yesterday! So much so that I am booking again this week for May (it would be sooner if my partner could get the time off work). What a little gem! 10/10! Thank you Denise, Jen and the gang :-) xxxx
