“Just fitted the bill”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2013

We were lookingt for somewhere to have lunch and several places were closed. The Stanley Arms didn't look all that open, but once inside it was a warm and cheerful place. We only had snack food, toasted sandwiches, soup and that sort of thing. Everything which should be hot was hot and the prices reasonable, if we are in the area again we will go back.

Stopped here recently for a bar meal at lunchtime and really enjoyed it.Friendly efficient staff , well cooked tasty food nicely served. They serve food all day including cream teas which some people were also having, and they advertise sunday lunches. The hotel is right beside the A595 in the middle of Calderbridge with its own car park to the side and a riverside beer garden for use in good weather.Don't live that far away so will be back.

Nice back ground music, nice seats, nice food, nice staff what more could you want for a good lunch.

We were looking for a dog friendly pub on our 3 peaks adventure and happened across the Stanley arms. Between the 3 of us we had squid, mushrooms and squid, lamb, curry and sweet and sour.
Had a fantastic, scrumptious meal and superb service. We will be back tomorrow night too!

We booked a long weekend at The Stanley to clean up the house I own in Millom, and brought all three dogs with us. We stayed in room 12 which was a big room in the attic with a very small door into the bathroom (mind your head as there were a couple of swear words uttered during our stay!).

The room was plenty big enough for us and the 3 dogs. It was a bit of a struggle for the old greyhound as he can no longer manage stairs well so Robin had to carry him (all 30 kilos) up 2 flights of stairs. No shower in this room, but I prefer a bath anyway. Generally cosy and comfortable which is what we like with the dogs. We hate places where you feel like a stray blade of grass on the carpet will cause the owners to go into meltdown!

It was great to see Clive and Mel again - lovely people and wonderful hosts. When staying at the Stanley once you become accepted as a 'regular' you have to have a fairly robust sense of humour as Clive is always ready with a joke or two. The steak was as good as Robin recalled and the new chef is doing a great job with the food. One night Robin had the special chicken breast in red wine and mushroom sauce, which was superb. I had the salmon in white wine sauce (minus prawns), also lovely but not enough sauce!

Things have been smartened up on the outside as well. The beer garden looks excellent and well-tended, with a few more tables since the last time.

The Stanley isn't a tourist pub in a tourist location. But it offers comfortable accommodation, good food and a warm welcome at a decent price. Dogs also allowed in the bar. It also offers a nice woodland stroll along the river Calder for the dogs, which we used in the evening to give the old greyhound his nightly potter.

Clive and Mel have worked hard taking this place on and it is 1 of 2 places we check for beds first when we come to this area.

Room Tip: Some rooms are quite small so if bringing dogs ask which are the larger rooms

Just popped in as we were passing and had a great meal. The Stanley burger is a large portion and the hungry ploughmans also very substantial. Good choice of beers and soft drinks. Would definitely come again when in the area.
