We've stayed here once before, and there's nothing bad you can say about the place. The rooms are clean and everything you need is provided. The meals are superb, especially the buffet breakfast which is amazing, so don't stay here if you're on a diet !!! There is also a superb leisure centre. But for us, what really made our stay was the staff. They are so friendly, and nothing is too much trouble. We will definately return at some time in the future.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are quite small, so ask.

We booked our stay after watching the Channel 4 series about this hotel, from which it looked like a pleasant, unpretentious and comfortable place to stay. It exceeded all our expectations and we shall definitely be returning. It had a warm atmosphere with nice cosy areas to read the papers and relax. Our dog was made most welcome. The gardens were pretty (complete with ducklings on the pond) and there were seating areas raised up from the grounds to enjoy a drink and the views across to the wooded hills. The staff were extremely friendly, polite and attentive and could not be faulted. Wayne invited us to a viewing of that Sunday's edition of the TV programme and we sat with our dogs and had a good laugh. The three-course evening meal included in our offer was superb and beautifully presented, as was the breakfast. Compliments to Paul the chef! With the dining room windows looking out over the Cumbrian hills we could not wish for a nicer place to enjoy our meals.

How fantastic to hear that you decided to book after watching the TV programme and have taken the time to write us this great review. All the staff will be delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay, in particular that the hotel and service exceeded expectation and that you are planning to come and stay again. We hope you continue to enjoy watching the programme.

After planning a trip to the lakes, we decided on this hotel after seeing the tv series. Just to have a little brush with celebrity! We were a bit nervous of what to expect! But it was fanastic. Looks much better in real life. The staff are very friendly, especially Wayne the manager who could chat for England (or Wales) but is very funny and makes you feel at home. And even the other staff must have seriously improved their English since being on tv. Had no problems with communication. The star attraction for my daughter was the broods of little ducklings (and Wayne kept us supplied with bread for feeding). Would definitely recommend

We booked two nights here prior to it being on Channel 4's 'Hotel' programme. I must admit if I'd seen the programme first I would have avoided it. We were, however, very pleasantly surprised by the hotel. The facilities were good with a decent swimming pool, sauna & steam room, clean rooms (though quite small) and very good food. The cost was extremely reasonable and the staff could not have been more helpful. The area around the hotel is great for walking with several towns a short drive away.
Don't be put off by the TV - it's a nice place!

We have stayed at this hotel before, and we have enjoyed this on both occasions. The hotel's setting is lovely. The food was excellent and well presented, the leisure facilities good, and the staff need a special mention. They are all very kind and obliging and nothing is too much trouble for them. We will definitely be coming back for a return visit later in the year

We accept that age deteriorates a property, but lack of cleanliness is unacceptable in the hospitality industry.

We would never write a review like this about any establishment especially as we are both hospitality professionals and have trained and travelled the world working for some of the finest hotel and restaurant companies. However, this place is a disgrace. Irrelevant of the aged state of the entire property, the whole place is filthy dirty. I have uploaded just a taste of some of the pictures that we took while we sadly had to suffer 2 nights in this disgusting establishment. We were in the area for a wedding and all the surrounding hotels were full and we sadly could not move location.

In the room we found: dirty bedside tables, dirty desk unit, stale water left in the kettle which was covered in dust, a rotting window frame, mould entering the room around the window, pubic hair in the stained bathtub, and a thick layer of dirty and dust on every surface about 5ft in height, dirt and rot around the door hinges and paint peeling from the walls, also 2 jumpers in the wardrobe that must have been left by the previous guests, the most disgusting item was the extractor fan in the bathroom (pictured below) and for over £115/night this is simply unacceptable.

In the bar we sat for a pre-dinner drink next to a banquet ledge covered in food debris mixed with dead insects and spider webs.

In the dining room we were sat next to a window (with a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside) and the window ledge was covered in breadcrumbs. Sadly the food was not the best experience either. With advertisements claiming their own vegetable garden and local meat, we were excited to taste some beautiful spring produce, only to be served some over cooked tough lamb with accompanying vegetables that brought back memories of school dinners!

Before checking out we went to talk to the manager at the reception. We asked if we could speak away from the lobby as we did not want other guests to hear the conversation. I presented the employee with a face towel from our room that I had used to wipe some of the dirt from the room and show them. The employee offered £20 off our total stay. When I then met with the manager he offered £50 off and claimed that he stays in the rooms on a regular basis, I can not believe this or his standards are below being a hotel manager. I was then informed that I should write to the owner as the manager did not have the authority to deal with the complaint any further. This letter has now been sent and we await an explanation.

There are some beautiful hotels in the area at similar cost, get a special rate at Gilpin Lodge or stay at the beautiful Punch Bowl Inn where the entire feel and food is fresh, local, clean and modernly tasteful.

It is unfortunate that if as Mr Calvani says he is a hospitality professional he did not raise any matters with us until the time of departure. We do not accept the points raised and he has not allowed us the opportunity to discuss these with him.

Stayed the week before Channel4s programme went live. First episode was a true reflection of the hotel. Lovely staff, and Wayne every bit as funny as the programme potrayed. We had a very comfortable stay. Afternoon tea on arrival - scones, cake etc. Food good value for the price paid. Menu could be a little more imaginative. Pool and spa facilities a real asset
