“A few parts shy of ideal”
Reviewed 25 June 2012

Ok, let's first address the safety and security of traveling to Mexico, especially driving into the country. It's a legitimate concern and risk. However, of the few stories I've heard of, none involved American civilians traveling to Mexico.

That being said, if this resort had 1) much less expensive food at the restaurants, 2) water slides and/or a lazy river--they've been saying for at least 5 years that they'd have a lazy river, yet still no lazy river, and 3) more activities for kids, then I would visit this resort at least 4 times each year.

This has been our 3rd stay in as many years as we make our 5-hour trip from the Phoenix area. Remember, it takes an extra 20 minutes or so to get to the Mayan Palace versus the Sandy Beach hotels. You are isolated without quick access to restaurants off the resort premises. As a result, you pay top dollar for the restaurant buffet and pool food. The food is average. But being isolated isn't a bad thing, right?

The staff is so helpful, humble, and friendly. My car didn't start as we were checking out and of the valets got under the hood and helped us start the car by banging the starter with a wrench. The maid service cleans daily. At most time shares, you usually get just a mid-week cleaning.

The pool is large and great for kids. The one-inch tiles have been breaking off since I've been coming and eventually they will need to shut down the pool and fix it. But there are plenty of umbrellas to enjoy shade.

The beach is the cleanest beach I've been on. The water is so warm during the warm months.

The room beds aren't very soft. I prefer sleeping on the softer couches. The rooms are spacious. The floors are entirely laid with travertine stone. The A/C always works fine.

The workout gym is located above the spa and has plenty of weight stations and treadmills. My wife and I are usually the only people there. And it over looks the Sea of Cortez.

If you are ok for spending a week on just relaxing and enjoying water then this is a great resort. I was able to get this as a Getaway through Interval Internationl. Soooo cheap.

This hotel was clean, the staff attentive, and the pool/bar was lively. The best thing about this hotel was the cleanliness of the beach. This hotel is way out of the way from town. That was not so much fun, but the beach conditions really are worth the trip.

As a Grand Mayan owner, this resort is not at the same level of luxury or serenity; however, the property does have one advantage over other Mayan locations. The beach with its extreme tides and cleanliness is welcoming, easy to walk, play and beachcomb. The staff puts in good effort to serve and understand English. Only one restaurant, one pool restaurant, and an uninspired gift shop/grocery for food. We left before our week was up. Friends who had joined us for a few days warned us that they had been stopped by the policia not 100 yards from the border for speeding (when they weren't) resulting in a $50 payment to proceed. Travelers beware in Sonoyta.

It's been two years since we've been to Mayan Palace in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point). The drive was better than the last time. The border crossing was still easy at Lukeville. There were better signage in Sonoyta directing us to Puerto Penasco and also signs reading "US Hastle Free Zone" on the road.

Mayan Palace has paved a cement road to the resort (6 miles) but is 15 miles from the front gate to town. The airport is open and we were told that soon there will be flights from Las Vegas and Phoenix (I'll believe it when it happens).

A Sam's Club is opening in town the end of the week and should offer additional shopping for locals and tourists. We were told also a new movie theatre is almost completed and will show first run movies. We had a great meal at Mickey's Place on Blvd freemont; nice atmosphere and reasonable prices. For pizza we found Brothers Pizza. It felt like a local pizza parlor without the tourist prices and was located at Constitucion and No Reeleccion.

Mayan Palace has not built the Grand Mayan rooms that were supposed to be built four years ago. We were told they will be built soon, but they are selling other upgraded properties now like Grand Luxxe and Grand Bliss. The restaurant is still overpriced but with a captive audience, they can still ask the price.

The housekeeping staff kept the rooms clean and were very helpful. They make cute birds with the towels and leave chocolate kisses on the bed.

The Nicholas golf course on property is till a tough course to play with a few absolutely beautiful holes on the water. The fairways needed some work, but since it doesn't get a lot of play, getting out wasn't a problem.

We felt safe while in town and at the resort. I recommend visiting this city and area for a different and relaxing vacation.

Room Tip: Ask for a tower ocean room for a great view of the Sea of Cortez. You can hear the furniture being...

We had bought a deal off a site and were a little nervous about going, but we were pleasantly surprised. After reading all the reviews, I felt we were better prepared and had realistic expectations that were met.

There were complaints about the road to get there. It is 20-25 minutes from town, but it is 98% paved. The last mile or two to the resort is dirt, but it is well graded and is almost better then the paved highway.

We didn't have any problems checking in. A 5pm check-in is not realistic. Rooms are constantly cleaned as soon as people leave - the check-in should be earlier. Check-out took some time because everyone was checking out at the same time and were reviewing their bills.

Food there is ridiculously expensive. We only ate there because we had credit with the coupon we bought. Breakfast ranged from $15-$20. Lunch was about $20 per person. We didn't even do dinner, which was likely $35-$40 per person. It's worth bringing food to eat and driving to town to eat dinner. Some great places were Flavio's (incredible shrimp cocktail), Friendly Dolphin, and The Lighthouse (shrimp fajitas - TONS of shrimp).

We were in a "studio" room. Fairly basic. There was a safe in the room and they didn't charge to use it. Our studio room did not have a refrigerator, though, which was disappointing. We didn't ask them for a refrigerator, as someone mentioned in a review, though. The maids did a great job of cleaning the room each day. Our room looked out at the entrance. We were disappointed with this, but soon realized that might be the best because of the noise, music, etc. coming from the pool on the rooms that look out over the pool and ocean. The thing we hated about the room, though, was that you could hear everything in the hallway: kids yelling and running down the tile hallway, people slamming their doors, people having a conversation in the hall. There are no "quiet hours" and the noise went on until 12am each night. I was glad we brought ear plugs, otherwise, we wouldn't have slept.

The pool and ocean were great. Perfect temperature. Although in the rules it indicates people can't "save" lounge chairs, people did. Unless you went out there at 7am and saved a lounge chair, it was difficult to find a chair later in the day. Large families would save numerous chairs that weren't used most of the time. This should be remedied. Bring your own umbrella and chairs to set yourself up on the beach.

We avoided the time share people, despite their 8am calls. Win!

All in all, it was a great trip and a great deal with the coupon we bought. Wish we had bought two!

Room Tip: If you want a refrigerator and kitchenette, get a suite.

Check in process needs some help, but once you live thru that the resort is great. Our pool server, Martin, made our vacation fantastic! Great beach. Beautiful view and nice resort made this a great get away.

Room Tip: Ocean views are great but not necessary to enjoy a great view.

Stayed here with family in February. The hotel is nicely laid out and the rooms were spacious and well equipped. the grounds are very attractive. The pool looked inviting but it was far too cold to swim. the indoor pool was less attractive but available. The gym is dated with old equipment and there is an outrageous fee to use it. The pool table in the bar is dated and there is a fee to use it. The internet is available but there is an outrageous fee to use it. The drinks and food available at the bars and restaurants were outrageously expensive. There is a lot of empty beach to walk on, the sea was far too cold to swim. The staff were great and worked very hard to make you comfortable - but there's nothing there! So we would drive in to the little town daily. Services there are still limited and there is not much to see/do if you dont like ATVing which appears to be the big draw. The shrimp that the town is famous for are amazing and fishing boats for hire relatively inexpensive. Puerto Penasco - not really that interesting. Mayan Palace - presumptious and overpriced and definitely not worth returning to.
