puerto penasco is only 3 hrs away but it feels like a whole world away. no traffic like phoenix, its peaceful and you can see the stars and the air is fresh and clean, no dust storms, no smog, just perfect, you feel like you never want to go back to arizona.

There are great gentle horses you can rent to ride along the beaches for hours

Looked after somewhat by the Playa Bonita and Laos Mar motel staff, Playa Bonita Beach is generally open to the public and is favored by both locals and visitors. It is probably the cleanest and least crowded beach fairly close to town. Views of both old and newer Rocky Point (RP) are spectacular at sunrise and sunset. A few vendors sell tacos and locally-made crafts.

One downside is that during Spring Break, noisy ATVs might be objectionable to some tourists. Access is off the Coastal Blvd according to plentiful directional signage. If you want to stay I recommend both Playa Bonita and Laos Mar hotels. They are reliable and have long been favorites of RP regulars. Many claim the best buffet and best margaritas inn town are served there. Enjoy!

This fine blond sand beach stretches for miles. At dawn the beach is quiet, with just the surf to accompany you. You may want to dally in the tide pools--find pigmy octopus under rocks--or power walk--or just stroll. Dogs are allowed, and credit to the dog owners the beach is clean. Shells are abundant. It's a great place to get lost in thought.

Later in the day mariachi bands, food vendors and peddlers of all goods touristic will liven up the beach. Sundown is magnificent--we hoped for a green flash but no joy.

At dark the beach goes quiet again.

What luck such a beauty is only a few hours from Tucson.

had the beach to ourselves in the evening loved the tide pools

They could clean the beaches a little bit more - shouldn't allow glass on the beach - saw lots of glass beer bottles

This is by far the best place to watch the sun set. The water is warm and the scenery is beautiful. This is a safer place to visit. I would just suggest paying attention to your surroundings anytime you are in Mexico. Remember you are in another country so don't take anything for granted. I've never had a problem but you really should be careful.
