Farleys House & Gallery
More attraction details
Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Sussex home of Surrealist photographer Lee Miller and artist Roland Penrose. Lee Miller and Roland Penrose came to live at Farleys House in 1949 and for the thirty five years that followed they built up a collection of contemporary art treasures, many of which were created by their friends and visitors including Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington and Joan Miro. The work of these and numerous others are exhibited in the house alongside those of Penrose and Miller giving the visitor a fascinating look into the world of the Surrealists. Farleys House and Gallery are open to the public on Sundays between April and October each year. Private group tours can be arranged for 12 - 45 people on Tuesday and Thursdays with advance booking. All visits to the house are by guided tour.

“Lee miller's War”
Reviewed 7 September 2013

Great exhibition of Lee Miller photos taken just as WW2 ended, some marvellous atmospheric shots of London and quite a. Few harrowing ones of Nazi soldiers and their victims. Well worth a visit but only on until October

“This was a delight to find in the Brighton Fringe Programme”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

I had been taliking about visiting Farley Farm House for some years and I eventually booked a tour through the Brighton Fringe Programme for 26.05.13. Farley Farm House is open each Sunday for the summer of 2013 I believe. The tours last for 50 minutes and they allow approximately ten people on the tour which start on the 1/2 hour. There is plenty to do if you have to wait for the next tour as there is an enchating garden with sculptures on display around and about on the various lawns and there is an Art Gallery in the Barn that one entres to have access to the said farm and a place for refreshments. This is a real gem of a place especially as I knew so much about Lee Miller and her husband Roland Penrose beforehand as I had seen a reading/talk about Lee and her husband by their son Antony and his daughter and a few friends at the Pavilion Hailsham probably 5yrs ago and consequently read about Lee Miller. I chanced on their house in Hampstead last year by chance whilst visiting N T properties nearby. I have a friend who has a painting painted by Lionel Penrose, Roland's brother. The tour was informative as the guide was so enthuisiastic about the works of art on display and their home and their interesting artistic friends that Lee and Roland entertained in Muddles Green.
