“Quality”
Reviewed 30 November 2011

RESORT:

This resort is best described with the word "Quality"; next "Luxury". It's a must experience to really appreciate what people are saying in their reviews. After staying at the Residences, it will be hard to go back to a regular resort. We met many people who were repeat guests. I will mention a few fabulous items:

Service: every staff member gives their 100% and there is an abundance of staff
Food: luxury gourmet food, let's just say, we held off on drinking too much to save room in our stomachs for the food. Also drinks are served in glasses and not plastic cups
Rooms: Huge and have everything you need, else just call room service and ask for it.
DRINKS: excellent variety and quality
BEACH CLUB: amazing, it will be hard to stay at resort without a beach club now, food and drink were top notch. Actually I loved their food menu here, its gourmet too. We also asked for a bowl of regular potato chips and they were happy to please.

INCLUVISE TOURS:

Some inclusive tours were great and other not sure why they include them at all. The tours through Vallarta Adventures are top notch! Especially the Sea Lion Adventure.

However the Canopy/Zip line tour included by the resort is not good. After zip lining in Costa Rica and then doing to Vallarta Adventure Outdoor Adventure tour, I'm not sure if the one included is all that safe (careful where you place your finger, you may open the only clip that attaches you to the line..). It also wastes a lot of time at the beginning, commuting back and forth to the city before finally heading up the mountain. And then once completing your tour, you are hungry and want to go back to the resort to eat and drink but they keep you an extra 2 hours, for you to eat there (and pay) and then go on a tequila tour/tasting before heading down the mountain and them conveniently dropping everyone off at the resort. If you can drop everyone off at the resort, why do we need to take individual taxis to a gas station so everyone has to pay, to then head to the city, wait for a staff member and then head back towards the resort before heading up the mountain. What a waste of time. This brings me to the taxi issue.

TAXI:

There has to be a smart & convenient way to coordinate all these taxis to the tours. The concierge desk at the Residence organizes most of the tours (included and non included) for you and hence why can't they organize the taxis? Most of the taxis say "Marival" on the side of them, so if the resort owns these taxis, why can't they coordinate them so to save us money (i.e. share taxis), or else include them in the tours aswell... And when you get into the taxi, each driver says a different price for the same location (and when you do share a taxi, the driver still expect full price from everyone...). I really wish Mexico would make installing meters mandatory so tourist don't feel like they are always being taken.

Many of these issues are minor and revolve around the waiting times for tours to start and taxi issues.

Marival Residence itself is a fabulous place and we may take the whole family next time (kids & grandparents). Hope to see you there sometime.

Room Tip: 3rd floor and up, good view of ocean.

Having recently returned from the Residences. I thought I'd spend more time on some of the negatives as there are many 5 star reviews that rave about it. So here in no particular order are some of our complaints that keep it from being a 5 star.

1) Constant music. Personally, when we leave the hustle-bustle of the city, we want to relax and get away from it all. We found unrelenting music to be a form of unwelcome noise pollution. Although it is not loud rave or disco music, there is always music in the background so after a while you feel like you're caught in a huge elevator. The music never stops from about 9AM until midnight. Suggestion: If you must have music, at least cycle it with 30 minutes of silence. We want to hear the breeze in the trees and the birds, Very tough with the omnipresent music on.

2. Tipping. The tipping situation is strange. For an all-inclusive that supposedly includes tips, there is constant unwritten pressure to tip. But how much to tip? After every meal, your waiters bring you a bill to sign. For two, the dinner bill is usually 900 pesos. If you were at a restaurant in the U.S., you would be expected to leave 15% or 20% as a tip which is not an insignificant amount of money. There is no way we could justify tips like that when tips are "included". What makes it tougher is that you often have 2 or even 3 waiters get involved in serving you. Do they all get tips? At a buffet, where you get your food and the waiters hover. What do you tip? What we ended up doing is typically leaving 20, 40 or 70 pesos for various meals depending on how much waiter involvement there was. I'm sure some will consider that unnecessary while others will consider it "cheap". There are pool boys, bell hops, taxi callers, maids, turn down service, shuttle drivers. We felt as if we always had to walk around with money to tip the huge staff (which requires constant money counting to see if we had smaller bills which we never had enough of). This all adds up and is a major annoyance. I'm not sure what the solution is, but it's a not insignificant drawback.

Internet. OK, this one is a real sore spot for us. At this point, nearly everything from a Motel 6 and up includes free wi-fi. The Marival is a holdout and charges a hefty fee for wi-fi. However, as if that isn't bad enough, we found our laptop constantly being kicked off the connection which required a call to the front desk, the same 5 minute conversation each time and then a new user name and password. Highly annoying! In addition, if you go to the sister resort for beach access, your codes will not work over there. Because of my line of work, like it or not I had to check in with the office several times a day. I was forced to plan trips to the beach accordingly and then usually deal with no wi-fi when we returned due to being booted off the network. Please Marival, free wi-fi at both resorts would make vacations much more relaxing and productive.

VIP Beach Club. Very nice, but not ideal as you cannot just walk 100 yards from your room down to the beach. You have to take the shuttle back and forth to the beach.

Middle of Nowhere. The resort is really in the middle of nowhere. There is nothing like a small town, or shops or a mall that you can stroll to. As such, everything involves a taxi trip. This is a drawback. If after dinner you'd like to walk off your meal and check out some shops, it's just not an option.

Coffee. OK, I'll admit up front we're big coffee drinkers. We like good hot fresh-brewed coffee with half and half. You basically cannot get a good cup of hot coffee at the Marival,. It's either fairly hot out of a carafe but awful, or you can request a cafe latte "de maquina" which is fresh brewed, but it arrives at your table at room temperature. Also, there is no half and half. It all seems to be 'Carnation' canned milk which we hate. For big coffee drinkers the Marival is hell on earth!

Hot Food. Related to the above coffee comments, most of the meals arrive lukewarm. You're warned that the plates are hot when you should be warned that the food is not!

Hotel Exchange Rate: It is a pet peeve of ours that hotels use money exchange as a profit center. While the official rate at our visit was about 13.9 pesos to the US dollar, the hotel was giving 11.7, about an 18% discount! As far as I can tell, this just hurts the staff as they end up getting dollars as tips instead of pesos. I hope the hotel gives the staff a better rate!

Smoking. A fair number of guests smoke. Ideally they would create smoking and non-smoking sections. Nothing worse than being on the beach with a chain smoker next to you or sitting down for a meal and find after you're settled that you're next to smokers.

Despite all of the above we had a great trip but there is room to improve.

Spent 9 days at the Marival this year Nove.12-21. The difference I found compared to other all inclusives that was that the food was much better. Others Ive been to had buffets but at Marival most of the food is ordered off a menu, although there is a breakfast and lunch buffet here. The overall quality of the food was great I thought. The staff are super friendly and accomadating. Although it isnt right on the beach you never have to wait more than a couple of mins for a beach shuttle to take you to their sister resort that is right on the beach. The beach club they have there is also amazing, although they could use a few more umbrellas as it is sometimes tough to get one if you dont get to the beach reasonably early. Overall an awesome trip!

I've been all over Mexico since 1982. Not all have been an all inclusive package but about 80% have. I felt obliged to make a comment on Marival Residences as they are way above anyone else. I can't speak for the really high end resorts but this is certainly a five star place at a 3 or 4 star price. The food is excellent restaurant quality and the service was top notch. They really made you feel like you had nothing to do but relax and enjoy. You never needed to leave the place. I would highly recommend it to anyone and have been doing so since my first visit.

We just retruned from our 5th time at this resort. This is now like home away from home. We have visited with consistant first class service and quality since its opening. We have come both as a couple and as a family with the end result always total satisfaction. Carlos, Reggie and the entire rest of the staff will go out of their way to make you feel at home, to ensure it is the best vacation you can have, and that your every need is taken care of. The residences are superb; roomy, clean, and complete with all amenities you could need. The food and drink at Omaggio, Lemmon Grass, and Insu are top notch. The VIP Beach Club at the sister resort is totally awesome, Paco will make sure your drinks are fresh and you are well fed during your time at the beach. The free tours are also outstanding. We also recommend the Rythms of the Night excursion, well worth the ticket price. One additional note, each time we return we always see someone that we had met during one of our previous visits, so we've concluded we are far from their only repeat guests.

Room Tip: All residences are fantastic...very roomy, Views are great from upper floors, more convenient access...

It was our first time in Mexico and weren't sure what to expect. Everything was handled professionally and completely. All transfers were perfect. This resort was everything I expected and more! Service was impecable. The staff was more than accommodating. After the first morning, Andreas met us at the door of Ommaggios restaurant and escorted us to a table in his area. He remembered every drink and every order and would confirm with us that it was what we wanted. Excursions were included - OMG - they were incredible. We swam with dolphins and sea lions. We took a sunset cruise. We snorkeled in beautiful cove. We toured old Puerto Vallarta, went up into the mountains and ate lunch in the rain forest. It was the biggest plate and the freshest sea food ever. Transfers to and from the resort were perfect. At no time did we feel any concern about leaving the resort or making it back there. Back at the resort, every night at Insu, the bar on the roof, gave us a beautiful and new sunset to enjoy. Christian was our wonderful service person there. He greeted us anytime we came in, offered us the drinks he knew we cared for. One night I was cold and asked for a hot cocoa. Within two minutes, Christian showed up with a steaming hot cup of the best hot cocoa I have EVER had. I would recommend this resort to ANYONE wanted to go to Mexico. We met people who were staying in Mexico 21 days and moving resorts twice. Once they experienced Marival, they decided to spend the entire time there. Having the sister resort to use as an option enhanced the experience since it had a private beach just for the Residences guests. Very well secured. If you didn't have a band you couldn't stay there. Our room was a two bedroom, two bath suite with full kitchen, fully stocked refridgerator, living room area, washer and dryer and a HUGE balcony. Sorry for bouncing around on this review but there are so many AMAZING things to tell. They did everything right !

Room Tip: If you want an ocean view, stay third floor or above. Rooms 313, 414 and 515 are right in the middl...
