The folks at the hotel are real nice and try to keep it clean. However; the facility is ancient and decrepit.

The "standard room" is dark, dreary, and depressing. My wife actually started crying even though we are extremely experienced travelers. The "superior' room we upgraded to was nicer but still equivalent to a 40 year old never refurbished Motel 6 with an ocean view.

We stayed at the Villa Varadero from Mar. 1 - 8. There were 2 adults and a 3 and 6 year old. We booked the one bedroom suite, all inclusive. When we first got there, I was not impressed. The room seemed a little old. By day 2 we were very happy. The one bedroom suite was great with kids and we made good use of the kitchennette. There was a small grocery store within a 2 minute walk so we could stock up on some things. I loved that it was a small resort and everything was close. You could go to the beach, restaurant, bar, pool or your room within a minute. The weather was perfect and the beach was beautiful. We swam everyday and there were no rocks or seaweed at all. The bus station is right outside the door, so we used that for PV, Bucerias and the water park. The kids had a blast at the water park which is only a few minutes away. The one bad thing is the food is not good. For breakfast we could always eat something as they had made to order eggs, french toast and pancakes. There was also juice and hashbrowns so we were all happy with that. Lunch was OK, but the kids only wanted hot dogs and hamburgers sot that was fine too. Supper was not good. We only ate there one night and ate out every other night. There are many great restaurants in Nuevo and PV so I didn't mind. I would stay here again, but people really need to know it's a 3 star and not more. In my opinion the good outweighed the bad. I have been to Mexico 13 times and stayed in 2 and 5 stars, so have lots to compare to. If you're looking to be pampered or have 9 restaurants, this is not the place for you. If you just want to relax with a great view and friendly staff, I would recommend this.

We arrived at Villa Varadero January 11th 2009 and were very disappointed with the place, the room was horrible fridge was old, Microwave very old paint coming off, no hot water, leaking sink and generally very depressing. We were moved after complaining to a newer suite but even that wasn't great but a lot better than what we had. Found the breakfast ok, we did not have any other meals there as we had heard they weren't good. We had an odd few problems but they were prompt to deal with them and the staff was very friendly. Beds were hard, but we managed with that we found the place just too old, hallways were smelly and the biggest thing that was always breaking down was the elevator. I really wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone unless money was a huge issue.

Arrived at Villa Varadero with two friends, another two to arrive later in the week. Our room was dirty, with something spilled over the table top and one couch. The refrigerator was balanced unevenly on top of a table with a microwave on top of it. Could hardly reach the microwave. Had to have staff connect refrigerator, as we were afraid of knocking down everything. Bathroom light burned out; called maintenance, but they did not arrive until the next day; showered in the dark; sliding glass door would not meet the frame to lock; nor did the windows; noisy, as we were located over the front desk area; left the next day for comfort of the Mayan.

First I want to say that the staff at this hotel were VERY accommodating. All of them spoke adequate English and were very helpful. Our hotel package included breakfast only.

Breakfast included a fruit bar and local Mexican fare that varied slightly each day - seasoned scrambled eggs, fried potato slices with onions, some kind of seasoned tortilla casserole, refried beans and a type of hot sauce to put on it. On two days they offered fried bananas, which are not my thing. They also had sweet bread (kind of like the U.S.'s sweet pastries, but made with a lot less sugar) and you could have omelets, pancakes or french toast made to order.

We did have two small problems that the staff took care of immediately. First problem - when a light was out in the bathroom, they replaced it within 15 minutes. Second problem - on the second night of our stay, there was a bad smell coming from the air conditioner. The next morning, they immediately moved us to a different room, which is great customer service.

The room was always kept clean. Our one and only main problem was the bed. It was so hard, it was like sleeping on cement, and I kid you not. Even the pillows didn't help - they were lumpy and hard. We stayed there five nights, and by the time we left, our backs and shoulders were sore. Its no wonder they offer massages for $35 USD. This is the only reason why I am giving this hotel three "stars". Everything else was great.

The hotel apparently caters to middle-class Mexicans, so there are a lot of Mexican families staying there, but lots of Americans and Canadians also.

A summary of our vacation: We had breakfast, got towels and claimed our spot on the beach, drank beer on the beach or boogie boarded in the afternoon, showered, watched the sunset, and went out to dinner. For 5 days straight. It was a great time!

Restaurant recommendations, all within 2 or 3 blocks of the hotel are:

eStudio Cafe - The menu is short, but their cheese and onion quesadilla was to die for. I had it twice.

8 Tostadas - Kind of hard to find, but if you walk around the nearby marina area, you'll find it. Its close to the dolphin encounter area. My husband had dorado enchiladas and I had chicken fajitas that were to DIE for (you have to ask for the tortillas and homemade salsa). The tortillas were paper thin and didn't tear - non-filling, healthy and delicious! We went back to this restaurant twice, and on the second night they gave us a free shot of tequila. We highly recommend this restaurant! Our bill was 250 pesos including two alcoholic drinks.

After we checked out on our last day, they kept our luggage in a secure area and let us sit on the beach until it was time for us to leave at the airport. Customer service was excellent! But the owner of the hotel really needs to do something about those beds!

I would definitely recomend this hotel, it was one of the greatest vacations of my life. Great Service, Great Food, Great beach, and the room was pretty mexican style. If someone has the oportunity to go to Nuevo Vallarta, México you should stay at Villa Varadero Hotel.
