“We Loved the resort and the friendly staff”
Reviewed 2 March 2014

This was our first visit to the resort in Nuevo Vallarta. Like in Stacy A's comments we were given a hotel type room, as the type room we purchased was not built yet. They up-graded us to a room in the Grand Bliss which gave us access to the pools at the Grand Mayan. Both the hotel and staff were great. The restaurants were very good. We met with member specialist Imaria Agboh and she offered to take care of any needs or concerns that we might have had, she was excellent. I would recommend this resort to anyone who wants an enjoyable vacation. I look forward to returning here and also going to some of Vida's other resorts in the future .

Room Tip: If you want a room with an ocean view be sure to ask for it while making your reservation.

Tomorrow, we'll conclude our second week at the Mayan Palace, and overall, it has been a very enjoyable experience. But there are some problems that management needs to address, although the most bothersome one probably cannot be handled. I speak of noise from an adjacent apartment, which is so noticeable that the walls could be classified as being made of paper. We have a one bedroom unit with a connecting door to what I surmise is probably a studio "lockout" unit, so the noise problem may not be as bad if a two bedroom unit is your choice. Noise from a TV and normal conversation, as well as someone snoring, can be heard frequently when the unit is occupied. Another problem - irritating, but can be worked around - is the lack of an easily accessible bar or coffee shop in the hotel itself. We were told that it was necessary to go outside the hotel building to gain access to the next door "La Plaza," which does contain a number of good food shops and a creperie. But La Plaza is physically connected to the Mayan Palace. We found out from a bell hop that it is possible to get into La Plaza by going to the first floor (not the ground floor) and then going through an unmarked double door, which, if locked, can be opened by someone in the grocery store just on the other side. Most of the time, it remains unlocked. Why the Mayan Palace is so oblivious to the convenience of its guests is simply beyond me. The door should be marked, and guests should be advised of this as an optional way to get into La Plaza. Another complaint is the cost of the Internet service. While it is fast enough at about 2 Gb per second download speed, there were a couple of occasions when it would not support streaming video service due, I expect, to the load on the network from other guests. 975 pesos for a week is simply exorbitant, especially when other resorts in the area now have free service.

At this time, the gym in the Mayan Palace is not in operation - it has been stripped of all equipment, and you must go to the Grand Mayan to use the gym there. The Mayan Palace gym is allegedly being renovated, but that's cold comfort at present. Moreover, the equipment in the Grand Mayan gym is dated. The concept is good, but the execution leaves something to be desired. Several of the weight machines require one to assume an awkward position to use them, as compared to equipment in other gyms I normally use back in the United States and on cruise ships. Walking for exercise is very easy to do here, as there is an extensive network of walking trails throughout the Mayan properties, and it can be about a mile walk from the Mayan Palace to the Grand Mayan gym. There is also a very efficient system using golf carts or similar for getting around between buildings on this huge resort. My wife is using a mobility scooter, and there is a special unit that allows her to load her scooter on the cart so that it can be transported anywhere on the resort. This is a definite plus.

The quality of the timeshare presentation this time was good, although the obnoxious presentation we went through here about seven years ago still holds the record for unpleasantness. Coming through the airport in Puerto Vallarta no longer makes you run the gauntlet of timeshare touts, but we were met at the hotel by a person who, in a weak moment, convinced us to participate. Our presenter, Christina, was very pleasant and professional, and when it developed that we definitely were not going to purchase anything, she turned us over to her supervisor, who rather immediately became somewhat pushy and unpleasant. He refused to listen to me when I pointed out that his time was up, became rude towards my wife, and I had to call him down. He then left in a huff. We did get the promised "presents," but anyone going through this routine should expect more of the same.

Would we come here again? The unequivocal answer is yes. Overall, the experience has been a good one, if not perfect.

Our vacation at the Grand Mayan was very enjoyable. Our Vida Member Specialist is Tema Ramariz who provided our update in a very professional manner. He will be our Member Specialist from now on. We had met him before at another presentation and were very impressed with his courtesy and helpfulness,

Since this resort does not provide free wi-fi to all of the buildings, I cannot give it an excellent rating. For a five star resort not to provide this service to all the guests, not just the guests in the Grand Luxe, it does not seem to be a fair situation. This is a complaint that I heard from many guests during my week at the Grand Mayan.

My wife and I celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary while at the Grand Mayan. Our evening (turn down) maid whose name is Maury and her Supervisor, Jazmine, made our anniversary very special. They decorated our room with several flower arrangements, candies, towel arrangements (very clever) and a beautiful card. They are to be commended.

Our time at the Grand Mayan was Feb. 8-15, 2014.

We stayed at the Mayan Palace for a week at the end of January. We traded through Interval International and I have to say this is the most disappointing trade we have made.
First Impression: after a long day of travel to arrive we are told we first have to meet with our "hostess" as the room isn't ready yet. We are then given the time share introduction and promised that if we went to a presentation it would be only for an hour and a very good breakfast would be provided. We had to say "NO" many times before she understood that we weren't going to listen to a time share spiel. We learned later that another couple had agreed to the breakfast, were bussed to another property and spent 5 hours before they could return. We insisted on being allowed to check into our room but were not allowed to upgrade it as "we are very full right now." We noted the next day that very few people were around on the grounds and only a handful by the pool each day so I rather doubt they were full. Also, we were given tan bracelets to wear in order to go about the property but could not use any other pools, only the one designated for those who didn't upgrade.
Room: very neat and clean but just a basic hotel room with not even a small fridge, coffee pot or microwave. The view was terrible; we were put on the non ocean-view side because we didn't go to the presentation. The full sized beds were too hard. The noise from the hall was quite loud and echoed when people talked.
Grounds: spectacular! Very lush with many plants, birds and iguanas. However, if one wasn't in the best health there was too much walking to get to the pool or ocean. Never did see the crocodiles the signs warned of.
Pool: it was very large with different depths so could accommodate the young and old. The water was a bit chilly because, after all, we didn't get an upgrade and therefore couldn't use the other pools which had warmed water in them. The pool staff were great and the exercise classes were fun.
Location: a walk down the beach got us to the NV Marina but we didn't learn this until a couple days in. It was too far to walk to a store or anywhere else. You had to take a cab or go on a tour to do anything off the property. They do have shuttles that can take you around the property if your health is poor or you're disabled.
Food: As others have said, the food was very expensive except at the Taco Break by the golf course. And I have to say they made very good and very authentic food for a decent price. We often had snacks by the pool at Happy Hour time but that could add up quickly as well. When we walked to the Marina, we found Eddys which I must say is a great find. We ate a couple meals there and were very happy with the food and the prices.
Entertainment: Again, because we did not go to the presentation we were not voluntarily provided information on what might be occurring each day. We learned on our own about checking with the travel desk and then got info on tours that might be done. In the evenings we would find out by walking about or returning from somewhere that there was live music at the Central staging area. We did go on the Tequila tour and enjoyed the tour of PV as well the the location where tequila is distilled and tasted (many flavors!)
Overall, the property is too big for it's britches as they continue to expand. You could see and hear construction going on. There are several different Condo buildings and clearly a tier system in place which delineates who owns a timeshare and at what level they own.
We probably won't be returning to the Mayan Palace.

We went to this property on an RCI trade a year ago. After reading all the reviews more, we were nervous about our decision with regards to the time share hawks. We were sent over for our bracelets and after about 15 minutes of a firm "no" We got out of the time share tour. We were not happy about the tricks they used to try and get us to take the tour. They told us our room was terrible and we could get upgraded if we took it. As it turned out, our room was large and lovely with a view of the mountains.
The grounds are spectacular, the entire place is immaculate and there were staff fixing and cleaning things constantly. Except for Tacos Break, all the on-site food is expensive, but no more so than any other resort or NYC and everything we ate was of very high quality and taste. We walked to Eddies for 2 dinners and both were very good.
There is no oven in the unit and the fridge is small, but there are adequate pots, pans etc.
The suggestions about wal-mart are great, but take off your bracelet when you go. If you wear it, other time share people will stalk you.
it was a great vacation!
The beds are hard.
