“Fantastic Resort”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

The hotel is in an easily accessible part of the town with about a 20 minute coach ride to the town of Puerto Vallarta. It backs onto a stunning beach with white sands and clear blue water with an adults pool and one for the kids. The facilities are of a brilliant standard, particularly the themed restaurants such as the steakhouse and Asian restaurant. The staff are very friendly and cannot do enough for the guests, the animation entertainment team work tirelessly to provide activities throughout the day such as volleyball, beach soccer, water polo and activities around the pool involving most people. Overall it was a brilliant hotel to stay in and was one of the many brilliant things about the town in general, a perfect place to stay whether you are with friends, family or a couple.

Room Tip: Leave the A/C and fan on throughout the day so you return to a cold room.

I have stayed in several Riu's because it's a safe bet as far as all-inclusives go. The food and service are typically the same at most Riu's. I do not think any of the all-inclusive resorts have the greatest foods, but some do better than others.
The rooms were very clean, the staff was very friendly, and the beach was very nice with no trash. This was my first time at this Riu and I would stay there again.

We had a great time here! All of the employees were so nice! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for all inclusive. We went with a group of adults but there is definitely something for everyone. Especially with kids. Ready to go back!

Stayed here from 17th may for two weeks. Very good flight on Dreamliner but to long. Fast check in at the riu I had emailed the hotel to ask for a room on the second floor and quiet which is exactly what I got. Lovely room bed was hard but it didn't bother us at all. The mini bar was supposed to be filled every two days but we had to keep asking. Food was really good went in two speciality resurants and enjoyed no trouble booking it's best not to go early wait till later and no queues. The reason I would never go back is it was far too busy with locals and many many kids we were in riu cancun last year at the same time and yes it was busy but not many kids. Also location was ok but nothing to walk to outside. Didn't like. The sea it was so rough and the pools were awful so noisy and packed the adult pool was full of very loud yobs shouting and swearing drunk and worse smoking in the pool. Also I didn't like the fact that smoking was allowed inside the bars.we also found that waiters were serving the Mexican people and ignoring us didn't like that. That's the only reasons wouldn't return. Went on a couple of trips and also went on the buses and taxis. We were lucky to share taxis with others so it worked out cheaper all in all a great hotel but not as good as the riu cancun.

We checked in May 31 and checked out June 3. We had 3 kids with us (14, 11 and 5).

Pros:
-Check in went smooth
-Rooms are gorgeous and clean
-Hotel overall is kept immaculate. There was always someone cleaning
-Pool for the kids
-Hotel staff was very friendly and extremely hard working. We saw several of the employees at the hotel for hours (12+) and then returning the next morning to work the same shift. All with a smile
-Nighttime entertainment was good
-Hotel does have a problem with the birds in the restaurants, but they do a great job of picking up the food and crumbs to prevent the birds from coming back.
-Beach was nice. Never had a hard time getting chairs

Cons:
-One of our rooms had a light out and the TV remote didn't work. We had to call three times to have it fixed
-The first two days (Sat and Sun), there was a waiter at the pool who brought us drinks from morning until at least 4pm. The last two days (Mon and Tue) there was no waiter until 1pm. We had to go and get drinks ourselves
-Not alot of games/activities for the kids
-We asked the front desk about kid activities and she said it was in our "welcome envelope". There was nothing in the envelope, so we assumed nothing for the kids. Come to find out, they have a Kids Club and we completely missed out.
-I have read through other reviews there was access to the Riu next door. That was never explained so we didn't know that either.
-When we reserved our time slot for the 3 speciality restaurants, we reserved the Steak House and the Chinese. The gal that reserved it for us told us to come back the next day to reserve the French Restaurant. We come back the next day (815am) and she tells us it's full. We explained that we came by the night before and tried to reserve and she told us to come back. How did it get full that fast? So...we missed out on the French restaurant.
-Food was OK. Some of the food clearly had a "freezer" taste to it and clearly was recycle from previous meals. Most of the time at the buffet, there were empty dishes of items never filled. The flare was catered toward Mexican cuisine.
-Dessert was subpar. Melted icecream, bite size frozen cakes and various fruit.
-FYI: You are not allowed to wear cotton TShirts in the pool
-As mentioned, the hotel caters toward the Hispanic population. During the evening events, alot of the staff spoke Spanish with no translation to English. You had no idea what was going on.

We probably would not return to this resort as we expected more activities for the kids and more interaction (games, etc) with the Staff throughout the day. Kids tend to get bored after the 3rd day of straight swimming with nothing to engage them.

We stayed at this hotel from the 17th May 2014 for 2 weeks. First impressions were very good. The lobby area was spacious and welcoming and it was the speediest check in we have ever had. We were in room no. 8062 which is a standard room, which had a large digital safe and large flat screen tv. The bed was enormous and very comfortable.

The room was very clean and plenty big enough however the mini bar was not replenished every two days as it should have been so we were often left without any drinking water and coffee. We did phone down to reception who promised to send some up but they never did so we had to collect water from the reception desk ourselves on several occasions.

The hotel inside and out was always being cleaned, tiles on walkways were polished and the communal toilets were always clean. The gardens were immaculate.

We found the bar staff very friendly and did not find getting a drink a problem. We also found it easy to book the speciality restaurants.

Waiters in the buffet restaurants were a bit hit and miss. Some days they couldn't do enough for you and other times we were just blanked. The food was also sometimes cold.

The beach was great and there was always plenty of sunbeds, the sea was warm. The swimming pools were the best temperature we have ever come across and were not overcrowded.

There is nothing to do outside of the hotel as there are no shops or restaurants within easy walking distance so if you are the type that like to have a stroll out on an evening for a drink or bite to eat then this may not be the place for you.

The staff at this hotel work very hard.

Our main dislike was the birds flying around the indoor buffet restaurant and also the lunch time buffet restaurant which is by the beach. Whether it is breakfast, lunch or evening meal (if there was still daylight)the birds were flying around the restaurants, walking on tables and perching next to the food. There was birds mess on the chairs, tables and floors which, if you were lucky was wiped away, but never properly cleaned so the stains were always there. We also saw the birds take food from the buffet dishes and also any plates of food left unattended on tables. The waiters just seem to ignore this. We found this totally unhygenic and totally unacceptable. We both have had severe stomach upsets during our stay, which have continued since we have arrived home.
We are wondering whether these upsets are down to the birds in the restaurants. Riu need to get this sorted as we spoke to many other people who also found the birds a big problem. It is such a shame as they work so hard to keep every thing and everywhere else spotlessly clean.

Thomson rate this hotel as 4 plus but we would not have rated it this high, having stayed at their 4 plus ratings previously.

Don't get us wrong, we had a good holiday but there is definitely room for improvement at this hotel.

Just returned from a 14 night stay at this hotel. Overall we had a fantastic holiday and would recommend this hotel and location to others.

Plus Points
- Amazing staff, helpful and friendly
- Great food in the main buffet, lots of choice. Also a better option for lunch as it has a greater selection and is cooler and quieter than the beach restaurant. We had no issues finding something tasty at every meal. Selection did become a bit limited at busiest times, mostly at weekends, when trying to keep up with sheer volume of guests
- Super clean, staff are always on hand scrubbing something
- Drinks, plentiful and if they aren't strong enough - ask for a double, it's never an issue. Service of pool bar staff is amazing - sometimes they're serving up to 8 people at once and yet some still find it necessary to be rude to them! Not on, these guys work so hard and for such long hours. Be polite and wait your turn!
- Adult pool is kept strictly for adults - totally appropriate given service of alcohol and the nature of the games etc
- Animation team - great group of people and a packed program everyday. Only suggestions would be that a lot of guests are staying longer than 1 week so it would be better to have enough events and games for two weeks to avoid repetition. Also, aqua aerobics is great but having it at 12pm is the hottest part of the day where people get sunburnt. It's would be safer a bit earlier in the day. Also, not a fan of the relaxation and massage section - no offense but I have no need to be touching a group of people in bathing suits, that I've never met before! Similarly, Zumba at 3pm when everyone has spent the afternoon drinking, won't maximize participation. If it was early morning, more might start their day that way.

So/so
Rooms - they are super clean and functional but could do with an upgrade. Beds are quite hard, furniture and decor is a bit dated. It wasn't really an issue for us as we don't go on holiday to spend it in the room but a few tweaks would make it more comfortable.

Needs improvement
Speciality restaurants - not so special. The Asian is buffet style rather than service and although the food was ok, it wasn't that warm and nothing you couldn't get in the main buffet on themed night. The steak house was table service but we felt rushed, hadn't finished our starters when mains arrived, desert was cold. Gourmet was the best of the 3 but food wasn't what we consider to be gourmet.
Wifi - don't mind that it's only 1.5 hours a day but fact that it's only accessible in the lobby is nonsense. It also makes the lobby look permanently untidy and unsociable as people are generally milling around on various devices and not talking to each other
