This was my first trip to this hotel and this area. I went with a bunch of retired firefighters from the Sacramento area who have been going to this area for several years. they go primarily to fish but also to spend time together, rehash years in the FD and yes, to maybe even consume a few adult beverages.
Can't give this property 5 stars, as it just insn't a 5 star resort. But what it IS is a fun place to stay. I fished for two days, and the boat (cruiser) and crew were fine. Fishing was off, but that's what fishing is all about.
The all inclusive food is good but not great, but again, it's only one part of the overall experience. One of the best parts was the staff. The restaurant staff welcomed us every evening even though it must be tough to seat a gang of 15 each night. All the servers made us feel welcome. I had dealt with Elizabeth in reservations and finally got to meet her in person. What a great lady.... very friendly and helpful.

All in all this was a very good experience. No flash or pressure as in Cabo. My friends and I have already booked for next year, and so should you.

Villas de Cortez is a new condo property that is part of the Hotel Palmas de Cortez Resort in Los Barriles, Mexico. We stayed at the condos from June 19-23, 2014, while my husband, our son and a friend fished for tuna and dorado. The resort is beautiful. It is located on a white sand beach and all the condo units face the beach and ocean. There are two pools, one of which has a swim-up bar, two restaurants that are quite good, and the hotel has its own fishing fleet. Occupants of the condos are allowed to use the pools and other facilities at the Hotel Palmas de Cortez which is just next door. The fishing was excellent. My husband was very satisfied with the boats he had reserved and with the captain and crew of each. He was especially impressed with the way the fish he caught were prepared, packed, and frozen at the Smoke House -- a service that was arranged by the hotel.

However, we were not happy with our accommodations at the villas. First, we did not get the unit we had reserved. (We needed a king-sized bed in the bedroom and two separate sleeping areas in the living room, which we were told the condo we reserved had.) On arrival we found that another party had been put in the unit we had reserved. We were put in the unit next door, which had only a double-sized sofa bed in the living room. Hotel management said they would provide an air bed so there would be two beds in the living area. While we were at dinner the first night, the hotel staff set up the air bed. When we returned from dinner the air bed was already flat. We re-inflated it, but apparently it had a serious leak and deflated shortly after we went to bed. The boy using it slept on the rock-hard marble floor all night. The boy sleeping on the sofa bed was poked by mattress springs every time he moved all night. The next morning I found two additional air beds stowed in a closet. With those inflated and set up in the living room for the duration, our party was at least able to sleep in greater comfort.

Cosmetically, the unit is very, very nice. Mechanically it was a disaster. Following are items that were not working in Unit 1302. (1) The key card reader in the door was not working when we arrived. We were given one "old school" key to share between the four of us until the next morning. We finally got keycards late in the afternoon of the third day. That was extremely inconvenient. (2) The washer and dryer did not work. (3) None of the telephones in the unit worked. (4) The DVD player did not work -- the unit did not have satellite or cable. (5) The dishwasher did not work. (6) The garbage disposal did not work. (7) The drain in the kitchen sink did not work and backed up. I complained to Pedro, the manager, about several of the major issues. He was always very agreeable, but nothing was done until the day we departed. Two hours before we had to leave for the airport, a repairman for the washer and dryer arrived and wanted in the bathroom to "fix things" while we were in the process of trying to shower and pack.

We were thankful that the air conditioning worked, the toilets flushed, and there was hot water for showers. The problem is those are not the "extras" for which we were paying a premium price ($320 a night). Although we really liked many features of the resort, I am sorry to say that we will probably not return because of the accommodations. I am giving Villas de Cortez a rating of 3. The location, the public spaces, and the fishing deserve a higher rating than that but Unit 1302 does not deserve a rating of more than 1.5 or 2.

Room Tip: If I were stay here again, I would rent through a private owner (VRBO). I think those units may be...

I am really sorry that your room had so many problems. We will contact the owner of the until to let them know of these issues. I just wanted to clarify one things from your review. That is that the Villas De Cortez is not part of Hotel Palmas De Cortez in any way. The units at the Villas De Cortez are all independently owned. The reservation office for hotel Palmas De Cortez does handle some reservations for some of the units, but they are all owned and operated by the private owners. The only unit that is owned by the Van Wormer family is the 4 bedroom Penthouse on the fifth floor.

Dont know what or why , but ...NEVER again. Arrived today 7-7-14. Driver was 30 mins plus late at airport. East cape transfers. Front desk Chuy has multiple programs & prices. Pay for room & boat extra charge for meal plan , fishing license, bait... Its all add ons !
Accommodations are outdated. Pool too warm , not refreshing.
After a hot humid day fishing, come back to eat outdoors no A/C ? Wall a/c unit wont get below 79-80 degrees ?
What happened here ? This was a fisherman's paradise ???

Thank you for your review. We are constantly remodeling our rooms to try and keep them fresh and up to date. We remodel a set of rooms each and every year. 5 years ago we lowered the room rates by $30 per person per night and made the meals optional. Many people did not like the fact that meals were automatically included. Playa Del Sol which is located 300 yards from Palmas De Cortez has a meals included plan for those who prefer that. Fishing License and bait have never been included with our hotel rates or boat rates, nor do we advertise it as such. I apologize if this was not made clear to you at the time you made your reservation. The pool being too warm is a tough one. At times the temperature rises and the pool does get warm. I apologize if your room's A/C did not work properly. They are constantly serviced to insure they are working properly. I wish you would have said something about the A/C while you were here. We could have either fixed the problem or change you into a different room. We are always striving to improve the quality of the hotel, and will continue to do so. Thanks, Eddie Dalmau/Baja's Van Wormer Resorts

If you are booking to fish, you will enjoy your stay. If you want a beach resort, this is probably not the place for you. This resort is focused on fishermen, so morning noise and beach activity with boat launching will likely annoy those who want to sleep in. There isn't a lot of night activity as the majority of guests are up by 6 AM. We were fortunate to have booked at one of the sister resorts that was unexpectedly closed. They honored our reservation with the all inclusive plan in a cabana room. We didn't really like the location and view of the room, so were upgraded with minimal charge to a second floor oceanfront room, which was very nice with a private balcony. We enjoyed our meals on site most of the week. We ventured into town for a few meals that were also very good. It helps to speak some basic Spanish phrases if you leave the resort. We really enjoyed renting ATVs and touring the arroyos, we also made some snorkeling outings to Cabo Pulmo and Punta Puscadero. The water was still a bit cool in March. We'd love to return later in the year with warmer waters to really enjoy the snorkeling. Fishing was fairly good, but we have had much better experiences for the price off of Cozumel. The crew was really not well prepared, much of the time. We spotted a fairly large Mako shark off the bow and they had no bait prepared after we had caught a small one earlier. By the time a bait got in the water, the shark was gone.

Room Tip: Upgrade and request a second floor ocean front room to get a private balcony

Thank you for your review Barbara! It is always nice to hear from our guests. March is not a great month for fishing, as our season really doesn't get going until April/May and goes through November. December-March are considered our off season and we become a wind surfing/kite boarding destination. We hope you will come visit us again during our peak season to enjoy warmer weather/water and much better fishing. Thank you again! Eddie Dalmau/Baja's Van Wormer Resorts

This hotel is the best full service hotel in town. They offer everything you could expect including pools with swim-up bar, banquet facilities, salon, spa, an excellent restaurant, two bars, and a full fishing fleet for the adventurous. The room-with-meal plan is a good choice, but there are also many places to eat in town that you might want to sample, so think about what works best for you. Room run from singles to multi room suites. Wifi is available and the service is good. The staff is always helpful and the beach is outstanding.

Room Tip: I always like the top floor rooms which can cut down on noise from room above.

My first stay last year was so fantastic. So I decided to visit again in May 2014. If you love to fish then this place is Mecca. Both visits have been in off season April and May, tops for Stripped Marlin. 7 days of fishing equalled 27 stripped Marlin landed and released. (thanks to Capt. Alberto and mate Daniel). Accommodations were clean and very comfortable. Great hot water!!!!!! My only complaint would be the food at the Bay View restaurant. Not as good as last year. It was nice to see familiar faces. most employees have worked there for decades. Palmas de Cortez has now become a yearly tradition for me.

Room Tip: ground floor rooms are great if your lugging a lot of fishing poles. Close to the pool and bar can g...

This was one of our favorite stops on a recent Mexico trip simply because of the lack of tourists here. The town was secluded & the beach was empty. The staff was friendly & helpful. The rooms were clean & more modern than most MX hotels. We loved the beautiful entry way & the beach/pool side bar. The bartenders were not overly friendly, but did make good drinks. The pools were large & didn't have many people at them. We did get a massage & thought it was great. We felt very safe the entire time here. We look forward to coming back here again someday just to relax.
