“Good value food, not so good decor.”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

We stopped here for a meal as it was convenient and didn't look too busy, so didn't really have any expectations. First impressions were that the décor was very dated and the whole place lacked atmosphere, however, the staff were very welcoming, smiling and friendly. For a Saturday evening the restaurant was quite quiet, which I would think was down do the lack of atmosphere and possibly its position next to the main road. The restaurant was also a little on the cool side.
The food, however, was good honest pub fayre. Nothing fancy, but what we had was well executed. We had carrot and coriander soup which tasted home made and came with a piece of warm baguette, and mushrooms in a creamy stilton sauce which was very tasty.
Mains were gammon with duck egg, fish cakes and Cajun chicken. We all chose to have these served with chips and veg. The chips were crisp and fluffy inside and the veg (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, carrots and peas) were fresh and nicely cooked. The gammon and chicken were tasty and tender and the fishcakes were good as well and all the portions were generous. One of us had a couple of glasses of the house red which was fine.
We didn't have room for pudding so rounded off the meal with coffee, one ordinary and one decaffeinated. The ordinary coffee was fresh whilst the decaffeinated appeared to be instant.
The service throughout the meal was attentive, polite and friendly.
Overall we all felt the meal was good value and we would happily go back again if in the area. It's a shame the décor doesn't match the food and service.

Nice little pub but could do with an injection of personality to the decor on the inside - to either become quaint chic old or modern. Food - steak was great and veggies were fresh and cooked just right. Starter - hubbies was great, mine was home made soup which was ok but i also cook that soup at home and do it better (of course ;) ) My soup had just been microwaved (i presume) as the bowl and soup itself were so so hot - too hot to eat whilst my hubby had his starter. Staff boxed this up for me to take home which was good. Desert wasn't great - overpriced cheese cake which seemed to have been a defrosted frozen supermarket one with a soggy base and little flavour. The cream on my liqueur coffee seemed to have a bitter taste so think it was on its way to souring. Staff were warm and welcoming and helpful so great service. With the food I think if you have the right thing its great. Would probably return at some point and try some other options. Although we live locally passed many times but never eaten there.

The room was nice and clean that is the mosty important criteria for me with a decent ensuite shower room where everything worked. I spent the evening in the pub having a few drinks plus a steak dinner that was very good. I also had the English breakfast that was again great value for money with everything cooked fresh. Would not hesitate in staying again. One small crib they only supply soap dispensers so bring a sponge or a bar of soap (I prefer a bar soap anyway)

Had breakfast here today with my friend we were met at the door and shown to a table by a very friendly young lady. The breakfast was excellent good quality sausage and bacon mushrooms fried egg and a choice of tomatoes or baked beans. Also toast plenty of butter and choice of marmalades and jams excellent value for £3.99. The waitress who had greeted us was very efficient and helpfull. Will definitely return soon and have lunch here

We enjoyed our stay at this B&B. Having the bar and restaurant on site was great. The food in the restaurant is reasonably priced and delicious and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed. The only downside was the ceiling in the bathroom and just outside our room, which was very water damaged. This didn't detract from our stay though and we would recommend it to others. The old well in the restaurant was also very interesting.

Get the mushrooms with slilton sauce ,too much sauce which is great as you can save to eat with your steak, which was superb, only complaint lot of grizzle so I was glad I had the 16 oz as I still had plenty to eat.

Bit noisy as tables were rather crammed together . But will probably go back.
