“A lovely meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2014

This was the first time we had eaten at The George and, although we had to wait a little while for our meal (we hadn't booked and they were busy), it was well worth it. The selection of wines was very good, the food was beautifully cooked and the service was friendly. I can especially recommend the peanut brittle dessert! Having 'discovered' The George we shall certainly be returning.

“Heaven in Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014

My friend and I visited The George, whilst staying in Alstonefield for a long weekend, walking in the area. We paid two visits, once for a sandwich lunch, taken in the garden, whilst watching the preparations for an intimate wedding reception, and secondly for Dinner.

Dinner on the Friday evening was amazing. Emily and her Team ran the restaurant seamlessly. The food was truly divine; we sampled the Scallops, Baked Cod and the Mushroom Risotto - My mouth still waters when I think of the Baked Cod. Wine selection was also impressive; had we not got a long walk to face the following day, a second bottle would have gone down nicely!

Alstonefield is a sleepy little village, with beautiful views and great walks and The George is definitely worth more than one visit.

“Excellent food, service and atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2014

This is a lovely gastro pub popular with both walkers stopping for a pint and locals and visitors alike for the great food and service. We went on Tuesday night which was quiet which meant we had a lovely table and lazy long meal. It can be very busy especially during the summer months so would always suggest booking.
I had my starter and main off the specials board and was so pleased I did so as was delicious. Starter was risotto with great flavours throughout and three of us ordered the lamb shank as our main. It was cooked to perfection and the meat just fell off the bone. The other dish was a steak and kidney pie which also received rave reviews. As for the dessert mine was the clear winner . It was a chocolate mousse with peanut parfait, baby peanut brittle , a mini chocolate ice cream bomb etc. I could have ordered it again right then but refrained as very full.
We also had a bottle of red wine. The prices reflected the quality so be mindful this is at top end for food. Also the village is lovely for a stroll and lunch time menu assume less expensive and different menu selection.

“More a restaurant than a pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2014

We were told about the George by the owners of the cottage that we rented in Alstonefield, a great village pub they said, you'll need to book at the weekend though. We went across at 6.30 on Friday evening (without booking) and all the tables both in the bar and the restaurant were reserved. We promised to order & eat quickly and were shown to a table by the bar. We shared the hummus and flat bread appetizer followed by the steak and kidney pie, both were very good. We would have liked to stay for another drink after finishing our meal but the bar area is tiny, the only seating available was outside and not very appealing in the wet, so went back "home" instead.
