Our four-night stay over Christmas (3 adults plus dog) fulfilled all our needs and expectations. The owner met us on arrival and was attentive to our wishes (down to Chrismas decorations!) The cottage is clean and comfortable without being clinical and full of personal touches which were much appreciated.
The solid fuel burner in the lounge was a real bonus in warming the entire house (supplementing the electric heating in other rooms) Not for a moment were we cold, despite near zero temperatures outside.
The kitchen is generalyl well equipped with cooking facilities for those wanting to hunker down and self-cater. However, the local pub (short walk away in the village) is to be recommended - excellent food and hospitable service.
Off-road parking would have been a bonus, though not a deal-breaker by any means.
A fantastic stay all round. Can't wait to come back for another visit!
This cottage was so lovely and perfect for a few days away from it all. The pub in the village is within walking distance and we had a very nice lunch. Look forward to visiting again.
Foxhollies is a beautiful clean & comfortable, well stocked cottage in a stunning, quiet location. Fantastic views and lovely walks. We enjoyed a walk to Hartington where the people were friendly & welcoming. The owner is helpful, lovely and ensured our stay was as good as it could be. We would definitely recommend this cottage to friends and family.
As a group of 5 friends and 2 small dogs this was the perfect place to meet up and spend a weekend together. Kevin, the host, was very welcoming, flexible and really helpful from the time I booked by answering initial messages quickly but also by adding extra touches which we really appreciated. On arrival the wood burning stove was blazing brightly making the cottage feel very cosy and Kevin was keen to make sure that everything was just right for us, which it was. We only had a weekend booked but would be very happy to return and spend much longer there as the views and nearby walks were great and there's so much more to see. We all would definitely book again!
Foxhollies is in a gorgeous location with an amazing view across the Manifold Valley and close to beautiful Dovedale. It's the perfect place to go for wonderful dog walking and peace and quiet. Alstonefield village is charming and very friendly with 2 lovely oldfashioned pubs, the Watts Russell and the George within walking distance, both with fantastic food! Foxhollies itself is really cosy with a great fire and traditional huge farmhouse kitchen and classic wood beamed ceilings and quirky furnishings to make you feel at home! The garden is enclosed and perfect for barbecues and sitting out to enjoy the sunset. Wish I still could live there!
Stayed at Foxhollies from 5th -10th November.Thought this was a super cottage.Loved the location and the proximity to a great local pub within walking distance.Excellent walks on the doorstep and a short distance from the pretty market town of Ashbourne.
The cottage had everything I needed and is of a high standard. Will definitely return here on a regular basis.I loved it!
We were only the third letting for this cottage, which is why there arent many reviews yet but this is a great little place. Charming Foxhollies Cottage perches at the top of the hill at the edge of the village with far reaching views across the Staffordshire Dales. Alstonfield is a small, peaceful and pretty village, perfectly located for walks from the door of the cottage along either the Dove or Manifold valleys. (Ordnance survey sheet 24). There is a working farm immediately behind the house, and we enjoyed watching the shepherd working his flock with a sheepdog in the field opposite.
The cottage has two rooms on the ground floor, a large kitchen dining room with all mod cons, and a smaller sitting room with views over the valley, shuttered windows and a woodburning stove.
Upstairs are three bedrooms, one iron framed king size bed with ensuite and also a single bedroom off it. And another bedroom can be either twin or kingsize (zip and link), this bedroom has a small shower room next to it, virtually en suite. Stripped boards, pine furnishings and light colours upstairs, it felt fresh and clean. Beds were made up with pretty sheets, and lovely soft towels for the bathrooms.
We didnt really spend lots of time at the house as we were out all day, but it was a perfect base for a few days walking.
The George in the village is excellent (300yards), we took the kids and and dog and had a superb meal by the fire in the bar, The Devonshire in Hartington has more standard pub fare and a very nice landlord!
