Stayed for one night whist attending a 25th wedding party. Lost my car keys between the hotel and the party. The staff could not have been more helpful checking taxi firms and even made an offer of a free night accommadation whilst we made arrangements , not required but was most appreciated.Good pub type hotel. Would stay again.

My husband and I stayed here over the Bank Holiday weekend with friends. While we usually like older properties with character this hotel is not one we would want to return to. The website suggests that the hotel has been well modernised and decorated; unfortunately this can't be said for our room. While an attempt had been made to make it so, the standard of decorating was appalling, the furniture barely fitted in the room (only one bedside light), and what furniture was there was filthy with spillages from previous occupants. Our room was on the back of the hotel, which avoided any road noise but overlooked the car-park and the outside drinking space. So on the warm Saturday night when the hotel bar was packed the noise levels were excessive which meant we had to shut our windows to get to sleep, only to wake later when the room became too hot to sleep in. Perhaps if someone stayed mid-week the noise would be less as it certainly seemed quieter the second night of our stay. The bathroom was compact, but basic, and there was very little water pressure for the shower.

The rest of the hotel was fine and the reception we had as we arrived was friendly and helpful and this was repeated on the last morning of our stay during breakfast. We ate in the hotel on the Saturday night and the meal, while pricey, was very nice, although the selection was limited for someone who doesn't like very rare lamb or tuna. What we weren't told was that the hotel didn't serve food on a Sunday evening. This wasn't a problem for us as we wanted to eat elsewhere, but could have been if we'd arrived back late and wanted to eat there. The breakfasts were generous.

Overall the hotel is well located to access the sights and attractions of the Peak District, but it was really a pub with rooms or an inn rather than a hotel and if our room was anything to go by (Caron) it needs updating and thoroughly cleaned. I should also point out that either the bed or the mattress in our room does slope downwards, which makes for an interesting sleeping position.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors may be quieter

Dear Guest

We are sorry that you have experienced an unfortunate stay with us.

We take all comments on board and always ensure that we correct things that are wrong to make sure that are put right.

We are at the moment going through all our rooms to freshen them up throughout summer and autumn, this room in particular we are making progress to ensure that it does get done immediately. I would just like to note that the furniture in the room is vintage and that is why it looks off colour with regards to the stains.

We are glad that you enjoyed your food with us and do hope that you return to see our rooms have been refreshed and some refurbished.

Kind regards and many thanks

We went there for a wedding that was closeby, lets say the friday night, before the ceremony, was a great rehersal, if you are into pub life, and think it's better not to be too far from bed, this is the place!
The breakfast is huge, perfect for hangover cleaning.
The rooms are clean, mine was small, but what else do I need but a bed and a shower.
The building being very old, you have to wait a bit for warm water in the shower, niothing too bad though.

A great little hotel which we would visit again. The room was beautifully decorated, we had the garland room, and had a lovely olde world charm to it with the beams and low ceilings. (although my 6ft tall partner had to mind his head) The whole building seemed nicely decorated and had heaps of character.
We had lunch and breakfast here and the food tasted fresh, well cooked and well presented.
The service was very polite and prompt if a little nervous, I think there were some trainees on shift, but this was not a problem as they were well supervised.
Nice biscuits in the room. (quality loo roll. I know its a small thing but it makes a difference)
The only problems we had, which were small, were that the shower cubicle in the bathroom was tiny and the saloon style doors to the bathroom did not shut properly and left a slim gap through which you could see in and out.
The hotel is situated road side and our window overlooked the road. The road is quite busy and with the window open we could not sleep and with the window closed the room was very warm and a bit stuffy.
We would stay again but ask for a room away from the road.

I thought this was an ok B&B. Good check-in and out times (2pm and 11am). Could do with a deep clean in my opinion - fried food from the pub can be smelt in the rooms. Perfectly ok for one night but I wouldn't want to stay longer.

Fantastic Hotel with excellent facilities with a great location.
Restaurant food was excellent with first class service and a good variety, definitely recommend that you use the dining facilities.
Bar facilities are good and it can get a little noisy Saturday night.
Our room was very good and comfortable.
Staff very professional and could not do enough.
Will definitely be back!!

This is a lovely hotel to stay at, although its not ideal for those expecting an early nights sleep on a Saturday. Being a 17th century building, and a very popular place for locals, the two didnt make for a quiet nights sleep. Being that I can pretty much sleep through anything though this wasn't a problem, but I can imagine this could be for some. Also, the window in the room did not shut fully, so there was a far bit if street noise and i can imagine pretty cold in the winter. We stayed in the Monroe room, which had an adjacent bathroom. Again not a problem as it was reflected in the rate of the room, but it would be nice to have had some dressing gowns in the bathroom, for those moments when you need to nip across in the night.
We had a meal in the restaurant which was very good, and would absolutly recommend this to guests.
In all, I would recommend this hotel to stay in on a Sunday and during the week, and the beds are so comfortable we did sleep really well dispite the noise. On a personal note, I was a bit disappointed there where no complimentary biscuits in the room. Not the healthy option I know, but would have tipped the scales a little for me.

Dear Guest
Thank you for your review we do take all comments on board.

I have spoken to my housekeeping with regards to the biscuits to ensure that they do put them in all of the rooms. With regards to the Bathrobes, we do have these for this particular room and they are kept in the wardrobe, again, I am sorry that my reception team did not mention this to you and I will ensure in the future that they let the guests know who stay in this room.
We are glad that you enjoyed your meal in the restaurant and we do hope as a resident you do come back to stay with us in the future.

Kind regards and many thanks
