“Good location, NOT great value”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2014

The Crossing is in a fantastic location for exploring the Icefield Parkway. Though tired, the accommodation is comfortable (no air conditioning), and clean. The prices at the restaurant, pub, store, gas-station, etc are ridiculous. Others have commented that the location is not remote enough to justify the prices, and I agree. It is on a highway, an hour's drive from a town (Lake Louise). An example - I bought a gator-aid and a Vitamin Water from the store. It was almost 12dollars. They were normal sized bottles (300-500mls). I thought the cashier had made an error... she explained to me that that was the price without batting an eyelash. The next day in Lake Louise, I made the same purchase for 5 dollars. The gas is about 60cents/liter higher, etc...

I could go on and on with examples in the restaurant and pub, but you get the idea...

the location is nice... but not worth the nickles and dimes...

The Crossing is handily located where the David Thompson Highway joins Highway 93, running north and south through Banff and Jasper. The scenery was great in every direction. We stayed in a cabin-style room with basic furnishings, but it was clean, quiet and comfortable, and met our expectations. Food was expensive, but a bowl of chili and a hunk of bread on the balcony of the Pub satisfied our evening need for an meal without breaking the bank. A gas station is on the site. The young staff, mostly from Australia, were friendly and helpful. No complaints!

The Crossing has been adequately described by previous writers: it is rustic with paint peeling off the deck, but the view of the mountains was fabulous and the room/beds were very comfortable. No Wifi, no hair dryer, etc but simple is good too. However, beware the 30-day cancellation policy!! BTW, the restaurant was very good. Staff were young but very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: If you have disabled people with you, ask for a room that you can drive up to. Our room was accessib...

Previous reviews had established low expectations. Couldn't have been more delighted! Cozy down duvets, coffee-makers in the room, beautifully tended flowers and landscaping. Clean rooms with no noise transfer. Not new, but clearly good effort being made. Loved all the hummingbirds too, and of course, stunning views!

Room Tip: loved the rooms in the back

There is no new ownership at The Crossing, However the fresh renovations and changes to the facility have been made possible in large part due to the renewal of the lease. Without this the companies hands were tied to a great extent. The owners are looking forward to many more upgrades throughout the resort and historically took great pride in the quality of facilities at The Crossing. They are eager to be in that position again. Please keep in touch with our new website for up-comings.
Thank you
Mike

This motel / resort at Saskatchewan Crossing on the Icefields Parkway probably has one of the best locations anywhere in the Rockies. The views are 180 degree and are spectacular. Reasonably close to superb hiking trails and the Columbia Icefields. The last time we stayed was in 1980 … not much has changed since then. The rooms are basic … and reasonably clean. There are only double beds .. no queens or kings. They do provide BBQs so guests can do their own cooking and a gazebo to eat in. They do have phones / you need to use the public pay phone to make long distance calls. WiFi is available at a cost of $20 per night. They do accept small pets for a fee! Very pricey for what you actually get but as I said earlier … they have the LOCATION! I have reviewed the Mount Wilson Restaurant separately … it's the only one around … and not worth stopping for! The resort has a motel / cabins / cafeteria / restaurant / gift shop / gas service station … everything travellers may require when this is the only stop for over an hour in any direction. (Lake Louise to the south / Rocky Mountain House to the east/ Jasper to the north)

Room Tip: The best views are probably the ones facing west towards the highway …. but the views are everywhere...

I appreciate your comments. We rely on accurate feedback in order to make appropriate changes and upgrades for all our guest. As we have undertaken a major renovation program at The Crossing that will cover 3 years I ask that you keep an eye on our website for new milestones, and perhaps we may continually improve things to accommodate you. In the meantime I would like to make note that WI-FI is $10.00 per day and We do not have any B-B-Q facilities other than in the Pub where one can enjoy the experience of grilling their own meat as they like.
Once again thanks for the comments.

We stopped at this motel during our road trip around Banff and Jasper. The check in was quick, staff were very pleasant. The room was outdated but clean and bed comfortable.

The problem was the bar/restaurant/gas station pricing. Everything was double or triple cost as if we were staying at an airport with vendors that have no clue what things cost everywhere else in the world. You want to have something to eat, pay $14 for a raw burger and then grill it yourself. How about gas, normal price $1.28 a litre, but we charge $1.80 just because. This place is not so remote that it cost them that much extra for transportation of all these goods.

Thank you for your feedback. We rely on accurate information in order to make changes and upgrades to better serve our customers. Perhaps you misunderstood the Pub offering. The indoor B-B-Q provides a fun experience for our guests and is very popular. The cost you refer to also includes Chili or Soup and Apple baked beans as well as Potato salad and Tossed salad c/w dressing. We also have 2 other restaurants at The resort however if you are dining after 10:00 p.m. then the pub is the only venue open. Yes the price of gas is high but I wish to pass on that the increased costs of generating our own power with diesel generators as well as significant increased costs of our recently renewed lease with Parks Canada and housing and feeding 60 employees all contribute to the retail price at The gas station. The price is a reflection of the overall costs of operation of the resort.
Again thanks for your feedback and we hope to see you again.

My stay at this resort was a very pleasant one! It was the perfect way to experience nature and the beauty of the Rockies. The front desk staff was real welcoming and friendly. My room was very clean, comfortable and the view from my window was unforgettable. The flowers on site were picture worthy as well.
There are several things one can do while staying here including a few lovely walking trails. I really enjoyed the trail leading to Pony Bridge. Highway 11, right next to the resort, is also a very scenic highway to cruise and wild life everywhere! I saw mountain goats, deer as well as a black bear. These were all right next to the highway! Peyto Lake is a must see and this is only a half hour drive away. The Ice-fields are also only a half hour away and offer helicopter rides which is really cool. I recommend this place to everyone! I'll be back for sure!!! ;)
