If in the Canadian Rockies, you must take a white water rafting adventure. Based on my research and experience, Hydra River Guides is the best choice. There are others closer to Banff, but these only offer Class 3 Rapids (which are relatively tame). Others outfitters put you in rafts where you do very little paddling (i.e., the guide had a rig that does most of the propulsion).

Hydra River Guides puts you on the Kicking Horse River, which has Class 4 rapids. The difference between Class 3 and 4 rapids is significant. It was a sheer adrenaline rush paddling through extremely powerful mini-waterfalls and navigating away from dangerous rocks. I'm a very experienced paddler, but was pretty drained physically when we made it through. Even some of the Class 3s were like bucking broncos. One rogue wave almost took me out of the boat.

We did the afternoon session. If you have a family, get there early as there is plenty to do at the launch site, like hiking and ballplaying (you can even squeeze in a zipline ride across the river). They serve a very nice lunch of grilled burgers and dogs which really hit the spot. Next is a safety brief which is probably the scariest part of the expedition (no one on our trip fell out of their rafts). The outfitters provide you with everything in terms of safety gear and wetsuits.

Our guide Karl was friendly and very knowledgeable. It's a great way to spend 4 hours. Most Highly Recommended.

My husband and I tried white water rafting for the first time August 9th, 2014. Roddy gave us an amazing first time experience on the water! We really loved that we were given our safety information as we needed it and felt like we were told everything that we would need to know.
The food was top notch! Much better than we expected for a BBQ lunch. We are looking forward to doing the extended run next year!

Friday 8th August, our guide was Gonzo, first class guy, very professional but good fun. The river trip was great fun but there were a couple of issues which made me rate the day 4 stars rather than 5. Firstly the transport provided from Banff was a bus which you couldnt close the windows so people were sitting with towels round them to keep warm. The other issue was when we got fed after the trip (the burgers were delicious) we were given a cold drink but had to pay $2 for a hot drink! Come on guys what would it cost you to provide a pot of coffee? The trip cost $140 plus tax per person and even in the middle of summer people get cold so a hot drink should be available free of charge.
