“No buffalo to be seen but not a problem!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of our wonderful Canadian holiday mostly booked through Kuoni Travel UK.
I have to admit that, in spite of the excellent welcome we received at reception, the initial impression of our ground floor room was dark and a little daunting. The day was dull which didn't help and the lovely trees outside masked what little light there was. However, it gradually grew on me and the provision of a log fire ready for lighting (which I lit!) made a great deal of difference later on giving the room a lovely warming atmosphere. The following day the grate was reset for us but the weather had warmed up a little so I didn't use it again. It was a lovely facility to have on hand however.
After having driven from Jasper that day we decided to stay at the Lodge for the evening and eat in their restaurant. This was a good move as the food, wine and our waitress, Brie, were all first rate. The restaurant has an esoteric old world atmosphere and is delightful.
We went out for a meal in Banff (v. my review of The Bison restaurant) the following night for a change but had our final meal at the Lodge in the bar area, The food and service (from our same waitress Brie - nothing cheesy about her! Sorry, couldn't resist that!) was yet again first rate.
If we were to visit Banff again we would certainly go for this hotel again although they need to do something to improve the parking for residents which I found a little awkward at times.
One other benefit from a UK perspective was that I was able to settle the bill with my credit card in GB pounds saving the commission on the currency transfer.
P. S. If you are birders it's worth exploring the grounds and local area around the hotel too. An early(ish) morning walk before breakfast was very productive.

Room Tip: Go for an upstairs room if you can as they are probably brighter in aspect than the ground floor roo...

I loved this place! The room was wonderful, ask for a premier room, the bed nice, the bathroom was great, it was huge with a heated floor!!
The room had a fireplace, which we didn't get to use because they were having a heat wave while we were there!! We had a balcony with the greatest view of a meadow where the elk came out every evening!!
The staff were so helpful, telling us about some great hikes and places to see! They also had a wonderful cheese and cracker plate with a lovely note telling me happy birthday! What a treat!
The restaurant was very nice, the food wonderful and the staff very friendly!!
We would stay here again for sure, next time making it a longer stay!!
Thanks to everyone for making our stay special!!

Room Tip: Make sure you spend the extra money for a premier room, top floor!

We stayed at the Buffalo Mountain lodge in August for 2 nights in a room on the upper floor of the 900 block. It was a great spacious room with a high wooden lodge ceiling, comfy bed and a big bathroom with a full-size bath and separate shower. There isn't any air conditioning, but the high ceiling and fan in the room meant it was pleasantly cool.

The hotel is about 1.5 kilometres from downtown Banff, which is walkable during the day. Probably best to drive at night. It was great being in a secluded location up in the mountain.

We did not use any of the hotel facilities such as the restaurant or hot tub as our visit was so short. The staff on reception were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms will have higher ceilings.

Due to the reviews of others, when we arrived, we requested an upgraded room in the 1100 block... the extra $25/night was well spent... and gets you the type of room pictured on the hotel's website. Room was large and comfortable, with great views of the forest. Only real complaint was that we could've used screens on the windows, or AC... and desk clerk was away from the desk and napping on a couch when we checked out (at 6am granted).

Room Tip: Ask for upgraded room (they won't honor this request until you are actually checking in)... it...

We have stayed in banff about 8 times and this is our favorite hotel.
The staff is amazing and the location is great.
They allow pets in some rooms which is perfect for us. We ended up having our wedding here and it was perfect!
I would recommend this place 100%

This is a lovely hotel and we had a superior room right at the back of the complex which overlooked the gathering of trees, with fantastic views of the mountains to the right and left.
We were greeted by Roe Deer just outside our balcony on arrival in to our room - beautiful.
The room was comfortable, with a real fireplace (which we didn't use) a balcony and an amazing bathroom.
It is quite a walk in to the town from the hotel, but if you walk down and get a cab back it's not too painful. Banff town has everything you want, restaurants, bars and shops. Most of the shops are for Banff tourism things, but then you don't come here for the shopping!
The restaurant in the hotel is lovely and friendly and we had breakfast and dinner here most nights. The food is really good. We stayed here for 7 nights and used the place as a base to then travel out to the Lakes and other trails. The staff were really helpful in helping us choose which trails to walk and lakes to see. As some of the lakes and trails were shut due to bear activity, and they looked up the areas for us.
We even had a dip in the outside hot tub - but we had amazing weather so it was a bit hot to sit in a hot tub!
A really lovely holiday in a very romantic setting (to us anyway :) )

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Buffalo Mountain Lodge is a peaceful retreat on Tunnel Mountain in Banff, AB. The lodge is surrounded by 9 acres of towering fir, pine, and spruce trees, yet just a 15 minute walk or 3 minute drive from the shopping, nightlife and restaurants that are on offer in downtown Banff. A favourite visitor pastime is to observe the deer and elk who frequently nibble on the lawn, right outside the lodge's windows. The lodge has 108 guest rooms, an outdoor hot tub, and several options for dining, making it the ideal location for a weekend getaway, wedding, or corporate retreat. Buffalo Mountain Lodge is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts' family of companies. Rooms at the lodge have fieldstone wood-burning fireplaces, cozy duvets, LCD televisions and Blu-ray players. Many feature patios or balconies. Each room has been carefully decorated to reflect the mountain lifestyle in Banff-the accommodation is anything but 'cookie cutter.' The outdoor stainless steel hot tub is best enjoyed after an invigorating hike, bike or ski on one of the nearby trails-or perhaps to aid digestion after a sumptuous meal in the lodge's highly acclaimed restaurant, Sleeping Buffalo. ... more   less
