“Self contained room & fun with a view for a family of 5”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2009

As a family of 5 it can be difficult to get comfortable accommodation at a reasonable price. Well we achieved that and more at the Douglas Fir resort. The room was nice, inc a balcony with a fantastic view of Rundle Mountain. Fireplace, Kitchenette and free WiFi.
For the days when the mountain weather has, well, the run of the mountains, there was an indoor double water-slide, pool and playground. Great fun! The indoor parking was convenient too our room, and for Banff in general as a place to visit for holiday, I couldn't speak highly enough. There was a small general store for supplies or downtown Banff was only a 5 minute drive for other goodies.
We all enjoyed our stay at Douglas Fir.

We stayed in the Rundle Suite with my parents and our three small children. The layout was great as we could be upstairs and not disturb my parents too much. The view of Mt Rundle was fantastic. The kitchen was great for kids as eating in restaurants is always a challenge with small children. Free Wifi. Waterslides. Indoor playground. All much appreciated. We drove and parking was easy. We also took advantage of the free Banff bus service which drops you right to the resort. The suite was clean and comfortable but not luxurious although the spa bath in the downstairs bedroom was impressive.

We had a great stay. The staff was pleasant and helpful, and the children loved the waterslides and playground so much they never wanted to leave the hotel. We all enjoyed watching the wildlife from our balcony. I would (and have) recommended tthe Douglas Fir to anyone, especially families with children.

We chose this hotel because of the play areas for kids, but overall I'm not super impressed. The hotel is a bit out of the way, and although your hotel key gets you free banff bus service, it's still hard to schlep the kid & all the kid gear around sans car. We are in a one bdrm condo - it's charming in some respects, but really just dated and worn. There are random hairs on the blankets and because the decor is dark, the whole place just never feels very clean. The bathroom is clean and functional though. The kitchen is functional, but again, not anything to write home about. The dishwasher doesn't work very well. I suppose overall you get what you pay for, and at least I'm not worried about the kid breaking anything fancy because there's nothing fancy here!

We stayed here for 3 nights in September and really enjoyed it. Our room was a studio in the main lodge building which had a decent kitchen, an adequate bathroom, a double bed and a living area with couch, table and best of all an open fire. We also had a balcony with a beautiful view of mountains and fir trees which really made the room. The interior is a bit dated but this is forgiven due to the view and the fire which we lit at night and gives an almost "log cabin" feel to the place.

The hotel is a bit out of town but we did not mind as it was quiet and peaceful at night. The Banff ROAM bus stops just outside and it only takes a few minutes to get in to town. There is also free parking available at the hotel.

Would highly recommend this place and will definitely go back in the future.

I really liked that this was not in town. Banff is a great village but I could live without the traffic noise at night. You could walk to the town center if you're physically fit or take the free ROAM buses.
I agree with the other reviews that said the hotel was rustic but clean. No bedbug could survive the amount of bleach that they used on the bedding! That's fine with me!
Nice location, service was good. No problems with housekeeping not showing whenever we wanted them.
And, let's not forget the water slides! No child can resist! If you're a couple or adults only, stay at the Buffalo Mountain Lodge just across the street, ( a little more upscale). But, if you have kids, this place can't be beat!

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Douglas Fir. The room was quaint and rustic. The beds were comfy. The breakfast groceries were waiting in our condo when we arrived. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The kids LOVED the waterslides. And we loved the great off-season deal, stay&ski 3days for the price of 2. We will most certainly be back same time next year and hope the great value is continued!!
