“Easy and comfortable”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2010

Went to Banff for a skiing holiday with our three children (10, 12, 14) and found this hotel at a great rate. Lobby kind of uninspiring but that doesn't matter. We had an end unit, loft with two queen (v. comfortable) beds upstairs and a murphy bed (pretty good but not as comfortable - but we were exhausted so it didn't really matter) on the main floor with kitchen, fireplace and 1 1/2 baths. It was perfect for a family of 5, very quiet , despite lots of guests. Bathrooms looked just renovated, clean as a whistle, kitchen was spotless and maid service cleaned up very well each day. The kids loved the water slide - even the 14 year old! Most nights it looked pretty busy but the kids never had to wait. Parents soaked in the hot tub or sat in the steam room while kids slid. A second, separate pool and hot tub area was just as nice. Again, spotless change room /bathroom facilities - looked newly done.
We parked under ground which was a treat for the early morning drive to the ski hills - and got a big kick out of the huge pile of wood and chopping area (complete with axe!) in the garage.
Kudos to the staff for a well run, clean and comfortable facility.

We have stayed at the Douglas Fir 4 times and have never been disappointed. Indoor playzone and waterslides are great for the family (included in price) and the variety of rooms are perfect for any size group. Located on beautiful Tunnel Mountain, the view is incredible and it's just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Banff Ave. The Banff "roam" bus picks up regularly right in front of the hotel and is free for hotel guests - no worries about finding a plce to park in Banff!
Fully equipped kitchens are excellent and there is also a little grocery/liquor store on site.
We look forward to coming here every year - it is our absolute favorite place to stay in Banff!

Our family decided to stay in Banff for an extra night after attending a wedding. The Douglas Fir had a more attractive rate and waterslide so we decided to give it a shot. It was interesting to have a kicthen in a room of that size but it ended up working out quite well. The fireplace was a nice touch. The kids have never had a chance to fall asleep beside a real fireplace before! Although the kids were a little too old ( 8 & 9) to really enjoy the playzone, the waterslide was a big hit. We also took advantage of the shuttle which runs into town - what a fantastic way to get out and see the town.
I remember the Douglas Fir from when I used to come to Banff as a teenager. Even though it is an older hotel, it's nice to see that they are putting in the effort to keep it good condition. Enjoyable visit and would stay there again.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel and everything was fantastic. The front desk staff were awesome, room was really nice, kids loved the loft. I'm going to keep this short because I hate reading through tons of info, If you are going to Banff, do yourself a favor and stay here you will not be disappointed.

Great place to stay for a family trip to Banff. Quiet location, good sized rooms, well-appointed kitchen, wood burning fireplace, waterslides, play area, arcade...all for an extremely reasonable price. We have stayed here in all seaons and have NEVER been disappointed. The interior is a bit dated, but you can't beat the overall experience.

Stayed here over Christmas with my husband's family. We had great service and the hotel has wonderful amenities for children.

Location: It was a little hard to find for first-timers like us. Follow the Tunnel Mountain signs (the hotel is actually ON the mountain) and you should be fine.

Rooms: Although a little dated (think 80s), the chalets are very, very clean and well-kept. Our unit looked like it had new carpeting and the beds were fairly new. There was also a large flat screen TV which was of interest to my husband and his brother. There was a wood-burning fireplace which was a nice touch. My husband and I also appreciated the fact that there was an ensuite bathroom in the upstairs loft, which afforded us a bit more privacy.

Kitchenette: Very small, but extremely functional. Included everything we needed, including pots, pans, plates, glasses, cooking utensils and thoughtful additions like a corkscrew.

Amenities: Has an incredible water park that has two great (and very fast) waterslides. Our neices (aged 5 and 7) went there everyday of our visit, they never tired of it. It is free for hotel guests. Also has a nice large hot tub. Unfortunately, we didn't know that there is a hotel guest-only pool, so we didn't make it there.

The hotel also has a small laundromat and a grocery store onsite, which is wonderful for travellers on an extended trip.

Service: Top drawer!! Every staff member we encountered was courteous, professional and efficient. I was especially impressed that they even offered housecleaning services on Christmas Day (upon request). Everyone was cheerful and helpful, despite having to work during the holidays.

I strongly recommend this hotel if you have children. You will enjoy yourselves thoroughly!

We had an A-frame lodge, which was a reasonably sized chalet with separate upstairs bedroom and bathroom.
Very old and dated; also quite dark; but it was fine. Kitchen was certainly useful.

For skiing you can get a bus just outside. However, you then have to change at Mount Royal further down the road and this can actually start to get rather frustrating - especially if you are going to have to ship all your children's ski's too!!

The resort is a little too far from town for my liking. Yes, you can get a bus, but getting one back can be touch and go. The taxi fares start to mount up!

The resort chalets are very close together and when the weekend crowd come in, the place can start to get a little noisy - you can certainly hear clumping feet through the walls!!

The Waterslide park is good fun for adults and the kids. It has a sauna and whirlpool. Kids wanted to go every day!!
Came back to Banff in Jan 2010 (stayed at Inns of Banff), but thought we would go back to the Waterslide park for an evening. We were astounded when they said it would cost $20CD each (roughly £50)!!! Let's face it, you're only there for an hour. Joke
