I attended a conference at the Fairmont Banff Springs during June 2012. I had room with a view of the river, and on a clear day you could see snow-capped mountain peaks. The beds were comfortable, and the room had ample space. There are several good bars and restaurants in the hotel. The center of Banff is a short walk from the hotel, and there are good hiking trails nearby. The staff was helpful and polite. This is a true full-service, luxury hotel.

Room Tip: There is a small cafe for coffee, snacks and light meals located near the concierge desk.

On May 19th, 2011, I submitted a bad review of this hotel, after having received a very bad experience.

To their credit, the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel management offered to make up for the bad weekend by offering us a complimentary 1 night visit.

Because of our own time constraints, we were unable to use the free gift within the 1 year limit they put on it, however, having contacted them at almost the 1 year mark, they were happy to extend the offer for the extra month we needed to use it.

The experience the second time around was much better. The service was excellent, there was no check-in even required, right from valet service to having our luggage delivered, everyone treated us very well. The staff at the spa were very friendly, the staff at the restaurant were very friendly.

It was a complete 180 Degree turnaround from the last visit. Based on this visit, I would recommend the hotel again. I would only hope that the service we received was the standard service for everyone, not because we were flagged as "VIP - make sure their stay is excellent"

My only single concern this time around, was I found their food service prices astronomical (food service not complimentary this visit).

I do give them full marks though for making up for the first horrible visit.

Wow! I am a platinum member with the Fairmont. I used my certificates which were earned for staying at a Fairmont hotel for over 53 nights. As a reward for my being away from my family, I decided to book with Banff Springs. I used my upgrades to get a suite. Was told that I would have a view of the valley. When we did arrive, much to our anticipation...we were totally disappointed. We were in the Stanley Thompson wing on the 2nd floor facing the parking lot. Had I known this when I booked, I would have chosen a different week-end. Nonetheless, the hotel did what they had to do and chuck us as far as possible. The hotel itself was extremely busy (not a bad thing), but it's easier to deal with a complaint from a platinum member using free nights, then taking complaints from a paying customer to have the room changed. It's not hard to do the math and understand how much money the Fairmont has made off of me after spending 53 nights in their hotels. Oh well.

The suite was ordinary. The hallways were dated and apart from cleaning staff (who were all pleasant), the wing seemed severely unattended by staff. I don't blame them as it feels remote from the main hotel. If you should stay, book rooms at the very least in the main hotel.

You are definitely paying for the location and it's history and for this, so long you understand this; then you won't worry about the price. It was clean to say the least.

The set-up in the lounge for cocktails is also in need of a refresher in its taste of scattered furniture. While it tries to be eclectic with a wide array of chairs and tables, the use of space made it odd to walk around in search for a spot. Still had a decent evening. Be also ready to pay $16 per cocktail.

The staff was really great when you engage with them. I really appreciated the no tip policy which everyone adhered to in this hotel. Other Fairmonts gladly grab your tips. Therefore, nice touch seeing the price you typically can pay for this place.

Finally, just remember to ensure that you get the room you ask for...or at least understand what you are getting before being disappointed. Understandably, not everyone can get a view.

We stayed four nights celebrating out 50th in August, 2012. We loved the ambience of the "Castle." It was the perfect setting for us. We spent several evenings on the Rundle Terrace enjoying the great view of the mountains and the Bow River valley. We toured the Castle with Dave, the historian, and spent many hours lounging and reading immersed in the charm of the hotel and the grandeur of the view. We did have to work around the four weddings taking place on a Saturday.

We have been planning this trip for six months and went on to visit several National Parks in the US and stayed or had breakfast, lunch or dinner at many of the old railroad lodges. The Fairmont Banff Springs was the high point of our trip. The only disappointment was THE Anniversary Dinner at the Banffshire Club at the hotel. Of course, we were anticipating a quiet intimate dinner for two with all the decorum that only a place like the Banff Springs could deliver. Unfortunately, this was spoiled by two very boisterous parties of ten. One group left after our salad course, only to be replaced immediately by another. Quite a disappointment!

Room Tip: Must pay $700 to get THE view.

This hotel is a typical five star Fairmont, with all the usual luxuries, restaurants and services one would expect - the room was large and the bed very comfortable. The hotel itself is so large, we were provided with a map to find our way to our room! It was set amongst the mountains and just an easy 15-20 min walk to the Banff township. A tip - the Fairmont chain does not provide free wi-fi to the rooms but if you join the Presidents Club, free of charge, either on-line before leaving home or at the check-in desk, you will receive all the benefits of this Club (which includes free wi-fi) at all Fairmonts.

OVERALL CONTEXT: This is THE hotel in Banff. They know it, so they charge insane rates, but they don't deliver. That's the bottom line. Sad, but true.

DETAILS:
1. Placed in Stanley Taylor Wing (to be avoided). Check in required multiple calls and subsequent calls to supervisors to have refrigerator and roll-away delivered. Room hit 80 degrees during first night. Took them two nights to move us to rooms in main hotel building.

2. Calling for any kind of service was torture. 75%+ of time put on hold, typically for 3 minutes+. Phone staff had serious attitude - - no sense of providing service to guests.

3. Check out reinforced bad experience. Waited on hold for 10 minutes (no joke) to order car and bellman. After 30 minutes went to bell stand to get cart myself since no bell man came to room. I was later told by car valet team that the operator had requested car but never put through our request for bell service.

4. Be aware that there is great inconsistency between rooms at same price level and that many rooms are very small.

5. There were a few positives. Concierge team was wonderful, knowledgeable, helpful (especially Lynn). Car parking / valet team also friendly and helpful. The facility is extremely well maintained.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the Stanley Taylor Wing - second class accommodations.

Just returned from spending the Labour Day weekend at the Fairmont Banff Springs. The Banff National Park is spectacular and that's all that needs to be said about that. To have all that hiking, canoeing, kayaking and just amazing landscape to look out at, is in itself amazing and makes for a most fulfilling vacation. To have a an excellent Hotel to stay at during your visit there, well that's just nothing less than perfect.

We are Fairmont Platinum members. We stayed on the Gold Floor. The room was small, but with a spectacular view down the Bow River valley with stunning views of Rundle Mountain and Tunnel Mountain. Late at night we opened the window while we slept and could here Bow Falls - an added perk. At first we wanted to switch to a larger room, the Gold Floor concierge said she would accommodate us, but the concierge advised us that the view would not be the same. We went with the view, kept our room, and were very grateful for her advice. We quickly became quite comfortable in our room and wouldn't have traded it for anything. PS we requested that view in the first place, paid for it, and got it.

I think it important to always mention the name of someone who provided excellent guest service and advice. We found all of the Fairmont staff once again outstanding as we always do in all of our Fairmont experiences, but Clare McCann (Gold Floor on Labour Day weekend 2012) was probably the most impressive staff member we've ever encountered. She was well versed in the area and all of the events, tours, and offerings available to make our stay an outstanding one. Top that with a delightful personality and genuine warmth, I can't think of better credentials for a concierge staff member. Fairmont should never let her slip away from them. If Fairmont could have one of her in each of their locations, they'd have it made across all of their resorts.

Restaurants were as good as any you will find in the town of Banff. We now know that looking outside the complex for food options, though interesting, is hardly competitive. That said, if you're looking for a less pricey option for a light lunch, try the MacLab Bistro at the Banff Centre. It has a spectacular view and was comfortably prices. Stroll the Centre while you're there. Interesting place to see.

Town is beautiful, but the shops lean heavily towards the tourist trade naturally. You will find things greatly overpriced and what you are paying for is the opportunity to say you bought it in Banff nothing special beyond that. That said, COWS Ice Cream is very good!

We will return as soon as we recover from this years hikes in Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Sunshine Meadows, and Tunnel Mountain. They are all spectacular, but don't miss Sunshine Meadows. We are outdoorsmen so we love it all. Unfortunately the last day the weather wasn't working with us so we had to forego a kayak excursion, but that will come next year. Also due to GRIZZLY warnings we had to pass on a few hikes because we didn't meet the mandated minimum number of 4 on any hike in lieu of those warnings. Next year we will bring two more with us. Otherwise that aspect of our stay was outstanding. Much of which was arranged for by The Fairmont Springs.

In summation, yes it's beautiful and yes it's pricey. Yes there are weddings and events, but we found this Fairmont unlike it's sister Fairmont Orchid in Hawaii very careful to see to the comfort of all it's guests and not just it's convention and special event participants. This alone gives this hotel big points in our book.Learn about the rooms and locations. Read and do homework. If you end up in a less than desirable room in this hotel, it might be your own fault for not specifying what you're looking for. A large room may offer you the luxury of space, but not necessarily a prime view. This is a large complex so it pays to be specific

We were very pleased and we will return next season.

Room Tip: If you want the prime view, I'd say it's down the Bow River Valley. Specify the size of bed...
