Only a five minute drive from Banff, Lake Minnewanka is really beautiful and easily accessible. The lake is clear and green and the mountains create an incredible backdrop. As Moraine and Louise lakes were still frozen this was a more than worthy alternative.

I thought the lake was ok nothing special but $46 for an hour cruise around a not very exciting lake, skip it and hike instead

Stayed at Two Jacks Campground at the end of Lk Minnewanka at a site along the river. Was a fairly wooded campground, beautiful coloured lake and the picture perfect quiet camping spot. Its so nice to get away from the crows in Banff and to feel like your really camping and in the mountains. Skip the hotels in Banff and stay here!!

We enjoyed a narrated cruise of Lake Minnewanka several miles east of Banff on July 4 and learned about the geological history and modern day developments since the pre-WWII period that led to this beautiful snow-melt fed lake nestled in the Banff National Park. This lake provides power for all of the surrounding communities and recreational activities in this part of Alberta and enjoys a rich history.

The tour sounded a bit tame for our boisterous kids so we went with the option to rent a small boat with an outboard motor. The rental place is run by the same people doing the tours, and they restrict you to staying in sight of the dam - which is about 8km out and back. We did this on the boat in an hour, which was just right. It was sunny but rather cool, and we sped along the lake watching for wildlife on the shore. The rental was around $50 for the first hour which is considerably cheaper than putting 4 people on the tour boat and a lot more fun.
