“Wonderful value for a means to kill a couple hours!”
Reviewed 20 November 2013

The admission price is just a voluntary donation. That's it! We had time to kill before our dinner reservation and spent it here, and I'm quite glad we did. It closes at 5pm, but you don't need too long to go through everything. If you like to read everything, you can easily spend a few hours. If you are more of a browser or you have kids, you probably can expect to spend maybe half an hour.

The staff are extremely friendly! There is no food allowed, but I came in with a sucker and the front desk lady got me a bag to put it in and allowed me to carry it with me.

“Interesting Local History”
Reviewed 14 November 2013

The Whyte Museum is open daily with a monetary donation of your choosing, so the price is definitely right. Some of their exhibits are permanent while others are temporary. My interest was peaked with the Mountain Guide pictures, but also loved the displays into the Whyte's relationships with Native Indians. The information on the Brewster family was also informative.

Lots to read and look at if history interests you, but wouldn't really recommend for younger children as I think they would grow bored without hands-on attractions. For adults, it's a great place to learn more about Banff's ancient history, shop at the gift shop, and enjoy beautiful artwork.

“Unique value”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

For the admission price of a voluntary donation this museum is an excellent value. It offers a one-floor look at Canadian Rockies life and exploration. Polite and professional staff. We did not check the outdoor exhibits.

“Excellent local Museum, worthy of a few hours visit”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

Many local museums can be old and tired, but this Museum had a interesting range of small exhibitions, well organised, with lots of interpretation levels, some very technical, others quirky. The content reflected the interests of the couple that originated the museum collections, with combination of local artists, ethnographic displays, history of surveying in the Rockies, mountain exploration, development of tourism as well as natural history of the region.

We expected to spend less than an hour, and wandered out over two hours later. The special exhibition was based on paintings of Canadian Pacific Railway, which showed some of the areas we travelled through, so we could compare landscapes past and present.

There were also small videos on different aspects of the life of the Whytes, other personalities from Banff, life in Banff and the Rockies, with places to sit down when your feet got tired.

For those with interest in archives, these are also based in the building, although we didn't get to see them, as they were only open in the afternoon. This museum is open more days than the Banff parks Musuem, which is only open Wednesday onwards.

There was no entry fee, but donations box as you exit. I was impressed by the standard and informative displays so happily donated in the box when I left, so they could keep up the good work.

“Peter and Katherine Whyte”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

Love this place ... if you want to learn about the history of Banff ... lots of great stories here. Also great artwork and good gift shop. There are old cabins in the back area of the museum that are open on certain days for your viewing.
