“cheapskate hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2014

Our trip with the Rocky Mountaineer was for the most part wonderful. The exception was the Banff Caribou Lodge & Spa. We stayed for two nights. They seemed to be cutting corners in every way. There was no air conditioning or fan. We were given one washcloth for two people for two days. They gave us one small sliver of soap for both the sink and shower for two days. There was long black hair on the bath towel which obviously belonged to neither of us. We had one orange which we cut up on the first day. Since we did not have a plate to put it on, we used the top of the ice bucket. It was not cleaned - found with the dried orange juice on it the next day. The mattress was ridiculously soft - probably old and worn. The carpet was in very bad shape.

This hotel is one of many along hotel row on Banff Avenue in Banff, quite a walk away from the downtown shopping and dining area. After staying there, I can see that it is obviously keyed toward serving the masses arriving in tour buses and traveling on the next day. I suspect it performs that function well. But it does so with the minimum of care for those tourists. The lobby is nice and the staff were personable if not particularly friendly and welcoming. Check-in was efficient. The rooms were very dated and somewhat shopworn. The bed was a swayback in need of replacement, and not a welcoming beacon for those with bad backs. It was also dark and a little dreary. The bathroom was also rather small, but functional. The hotel is geared toward winter visitors, and is not air conditioned. Given the coolness of the air in the mountains at night, that might not be such a problem except that the only ventilation is provided by a small window that cranks open from a side hinge only a few inches. Left to its own devices, the room is much warmer than the outside. A fan is provided but moving hot air is still hot air. After a miserable first night, we learned to go up to the room early and leave the door propped open for a couple of hours to cool down the room from the air conditioned air from the hall. The door does not completely close behind you, and you have to remember to firmly shut it. It can also be hard to open since it sticks, and both these points represent concerns from a safety and security standpoint. There is a Mr. Coffee coffeemaker but we found our pot still contained coffee from a previous occupant and we had to clean it before use. We ate breakfast (twice) and dinner (once) in The Keg restaurant. Breakfast was an average to somewhat below average buffet. Dinner was expensive but fairly good, with a small but decent wine list and pleasant service. Internet service in the room was almost unusable. It was so flaky that you could not even reliably retrieve e-mails, although at times it was a little better and we could get mails. In the lobby, it was fast. Their advertisement of blazing speeds was clearly inappropriate in the rooms, and an exaggeration in the lobby. In this day and age, you should not have to go to a hotel lobby to use internet services. I would likely not stay here again, particularly in the summer.

A nice place. Nothing incredible but nice. Rooms were clean. A bit small and dark, but not bad. Breakfast buffet was fair. Lunch and dinner menu were much better. In my few, Lodging in Banff is overpriced. However you pay for the location. In comparison to the other properties in the area, this one is okay. I can't highly recommend it, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from staying there. One side note, I was proactivily told by the front desk, that we were overcharged for the first few nights but they "counldn't do anything about it since we had already agreed to the price." However they were able to adjust the price to the correct rate for our remaining days. Seemed a little unusual but I didn't argue. Also, I should mention that we paid for an upgraded room. After staying in the room for a few days, I am still somewhat puzzled as to what we were upgraded to? Honestly, I didn't really notice anything different in the upgrade. Room was small and dark. One small window with modest furnishings. On a positive note, the housekeeping staff was very friendly. Overall, the place is okay. Wish I could say more.

This hotel is quite a walk out of town - about 20 mins
Our room was quite dark - the room was long & narrow but only a small window - but who stays indoors when on holidays?
We ate at The Keg in the lobby - expensive & ok !!
The rooms had no AC but plenty of fans - but it wasn't hot enough to need them
It was clean & comfortable - but we took the walk into town both mornings for breakfast so can't comment on anything more

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the front street but not a problem

We stayed here only for one night but we would have been happy to stay longer. The staff were very nice and friendly and were prepared to do what was necessary for their customers. The bedroom was spacious and well fitted out, spotlessly clean and everything in it's place. We went for a steam when we arrived and then had a lovely dinner in the Keg restaurant attached to the hotel which was excellent. We sat outside in the open which was lovely on a beautiful night.Thw waitress who served us was first class. We slept well and we have no problem recommending this hotel/restaurant to anyone

Hotel it self was very nice, good facilities like Spa and sauna, Great restaurant "The Keg" in the lobby fully recover end the sirloin steak and crayfish tail , yum, few issues though our room had the roof line coming in across the room lowering the ceiling height in Centre of the room and making it hard to get around the room, also no air conditioning in summer, only fans and room was next to maids storage which. ade it noisy at times.

The staff here was absolutely wonderful at the front desk as well as in the restaurant. I had an upgraded king room, but it was fairly small, although clean, for the most part. I was going to send this part of the review to the hotel privately but there was no way to email them directly, so I have to put it here. The coffee pot in my room needs a deep clean with a brush. It was filthy. You cannot let all of the coffee grounds and residue accumulate on these. Another problem I had with the room was there is no air conditioning. It was August and there is only a small window for ventilation. They do provide you with a wonderful (dirty) little fan which is great for white noise but I do not like a fan blowing on me all night and is does not really cool the room.
