“NICE and RENOVATED HOTEL (avoid room 111!)”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

The hotel is renovated and it is nice. Mid size clean rooms.
Friendly and young staff. We arrived late at night and the restaurant staff welcomed us even if it has been closed 15 minutes before.
It is quite, but the last morning we where waken up by a noisy group of people that were waiting for the restaurant to open for breakfast (our room was right beside the restaurant entrance).
I'm suggesting the staff to do something to avoid that as it was very disappointing! We were on vacation and we needed to rest!

Room Tip: Avoid room 111 (beside the restaurant)

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. I appreciate your feedback.

I’m sorry that you experienced noise outside your room. We operate inside a renovated building and do have some challenges with noise. We are looking into soundproofing so that your stay could be quieter in the future.

I’m glad that the restaurant staff were welcoming, the rooms were clean and you thought the hotel was nice. We hope to see you again soon!

We have stayed here on a number of occasions and recently had our wedding in this hotel on the long weekend in August. It is our favourite place to stay in Banff. The staff is wonderful - from the housekeeping staff, to the front desk staff, to the chef and wait staff at the restaurant, to the managers. The staff went above and beyond to make sure our wedding went off without a hitch and all of our guests commented on how much they loved the place.

It is definitely a simple hotel (i.e. you won't get a swimming pool or super fancy tv) but that is part of the charm. Who goes to Banff to watch TV or swim in a swimming pool anyway? The views from the hotel are spectacular. I would say they are on par with the Rimrock and the Banff Springs but at a fraction of the price and without all the day tourist traffic. Be sure to get one of the rooms with a view. I have never had any issues with the noise from the hwy trafffic and have eaten on (and got married on!) the patio which is above the highway. The Juniper has taken great care with the decoration of the hotel with interesting items of native art, old pictures and menus from the hotel and vintage postcards from Banff. The other great thing I like about the hotel is that it is secluded from the hustle and bustle of Banff but is a short walk or a cheap cab ride away from the town center if you want more action. Staying at the Juniper is more akin to staying at a lodge with great hiking trail leading out of the hotel. It is so much nicer than staying at one of the cookie cutter hotels on Banff Ave.

One of our favourite parts of the Juniper is the restaurant. I believe it is one of the best restaurants in Banff and by far has the best view. We have stopped here several times on the way back from hiking or skiing and we never fail to be impressed. The menu is creative, uses high quality and local ingredients and is reasonably priced when compared to similar options in the town. The wait staff is excellent and seem to really enjoy working there. We noticed that we had some of the same waitstaff over the dozen or so meals we ate at the restaurant over the last year which is rare in Banff as it tends to have a large staff turnover. I have had breakfast, lunch and dinner at the bistro and all have been delicious and thoughtfully prepared.

As far as our wedding was concerned, the day was perfect and we could not have asked for more. Our guests all loved the venue and we had a great time staying at the hotel. The staff was very helpful and were happy to meet with as many times as needed to tweak menus, assist with decorating advice or ideas and generally make our day everything we could ask for. The food was delicious and the servers made sure that all 80 of our guests basically got their meals at the same time as the head table. My husband's family is full of people in the restaurant business and accordingly are a tough crowd. They were very impressed by the food and service. It is a great place to have a mid sized (60-90 people) wedding as literally all the guests can stay at the hotel.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view. Families may want to check out the cabins which are a little more rustic bu...

pleasant place just across highway 1. About 1.5 km walk from town center our room had a magnificent view of the mountains but was noisy from traffic on highway. Room was small, furniture old. Clean. Very pleasant and helpful staff. No breakfast. no microwave available.just coffee in room. overpriced. Would not return. Bed not very comfortable.

Dear Guest,

I appreciate you taking the time to write a review about our hotel. I apologize that you do not think that the price reflected your experience with us.

We do provide high quality down comforters to every room so I’m sorry that you thought the beds were uncomfortable. We do operate inside of a renovated building rich with history however that means it doesn’t block out 100% of noise from the highway. We are currently looking into better soundproofing options.

I am glad you thought our staff were helpful and the hotel was clean with some of the best views in Banff. Thank you again for your feedback.

Myself, husband and another couple rented one of the Chalets, and our dog. Very nice, quiet place to stay. Lots of room , very clean, neat. Full kitchen, and the Bistro also has excellent food. It is located out of town but only a few minutes drive. Much quieter and peaceful away from the crowds.
Loved our stay, would defiantly stay here again, and would recommend it to friends.

The Juniper is located away from downtown Banff, just off the Trans Canada highway at the foot of Mt Norquay. The location is isolated but only a 5 minute drive from services in the village of Banff. It overlooks the Bow River valley and the mountains beyond. The highway is close but traffic noise was not too noticeable. Rooms are large, and those on the south side have a balcony with nice views of the valley. Our room had 2 queen beds, a sofa, chairs, desk, fridge, chaise lounge, a wardrobe, coffee maker, tv, & free wifi. There was ample counter space in the bathroom with good mirrors, fluffy towels, and a drying cord in the shower. There is no elevator so luggage must be carried to the second floor. This was not a problem for us but could be for some in which case a room on the first floor should be requested. The on-site restaurant had very good food at a reasonable price and our wait staff, Mason and Dave, were very pleasant and attentive. The open-faced salmon sandwich and the barley/mushroom soup were excellent. The Mt Norquay ski area is a 5 minute drive up the mountain with nice hiking trails in the summer. Be warned, however, that the mosquitoes were fierce in late July when we hiked the Stoney Squaw trail about 5:30 in the afternoon. Might not have been quite as bad earlier in the day but be prepared to use bug repellant liberally.

Room Tip: As others have said - best views are on the south side with views of the valley.

We have stayed at The Juniper for 5 consecutive summers, and we're always thrilled with our stay. This year we were married on the Juniper patio facing Mt. Rundle, and all our guests & family were blown away by the view, the rooms, the food, and the low price of their rooms. Every detail of our wedding was handled to perfection, with every smiling staff member going above and beyond to make our day perfect - beautiful personal touches by people who really cared! The Healy Creek Suite was the perfect home for our wedding week, and we'll be returning every time we visit Alberta!

Room Tip: Ask for Valley View or Rundle View - Mountain View may get you a view of the woods of Mount Norquay.

We really enjoyed our five night stay at this boutique hotel, which has the best view in Banff! It's perched at the base of Mt. Norquay overlooking the entire valley and town of Banff, but because of its elevation, you can only see a few buildings (esp. the Fairmont) so your view is much more natural and scenic. The view from our room was spectacular and you felt like the surrounding mountains were embracing you (see picture). The hotel is also isolated from any other manmade structure, so you're completely surrounded by woods, giving you that feeling of being in the wilderness. It was super easy to get into town, which was just a five minute drive away (or less). We were able to go out for dinner and enjoy the hustle and bustle of Banff Ave, yet still enjoy the natural environment at the hotel. In terms of look and feel, the hotel has a very chic and modern look, yet has Native art pieces and sculptures throughout, so you get fitting reminders of the area and its original culture. The hotel and our room was very clean and the grounds were very clean and well maintained. Our room was great and very spacious. We liked having a full couch and three comfy upholstered chairs throughout the room. The staff and service was amazing. We arrived a little after 1am and was greeted by a very friendly and witty front desk associate named Patrick. He was very helpful and even asked us if we were hungry and if we'd like to see a bigger room, which was a great idea because we took his advice and upgraded! We were also impressed with the hotel's restaurant, where we ate breakfast every day. I HIGHLY recommend adding the breakfast because the food was great and it's the best way to get centered before embarking on your day. It gave us a chance to really soak-in where we were, what we've done, and what we planned to do. Having breakfast daily with that incredible view made our trip extra special and feel less hurried (see picture). We also appreciated the waitstaff, especially Mason, who was very attentive to our needs and even provided some interesting historical information about the recent floods (we didn't know anything about it) and some very useful advice about staying safe during our hikes. He suggested bringing bear spray and informed us that the hotel had a can we could borrow without charge during our stay. We took his advice and felt a lot safer during our hiking trips! We also saved dinner at the hotel's Bistro for the last night, but we wish we had eaten there sooner because we would've come more often. The food was the best we've had compared to other restaurants in Banff (we ate at four other places) and it was great to see local and regional fare on the menu (we had fish from Manitoba, which was full of flavor and cooked perfectly!), and again, because it got dark late, we had a fabulous view during our meal. And lastly, as a US-American same-sex couple, we felt very welcome by everyone at the hotel, which is something we really, really appreciate and look for when we book our trips. It was great to see that another same-sex couple had booked the hotel's event space to renew their vows after being together for 25 years! We loved this hotel and plan to stay again the next time we're in Banff. A great and ideal representative of Canada!
