“Didn't start well, ended great!”
Reviewed 7 November 2010

My husband and I stayed at the Juniper this weekend with our Golden Retriever puppy. We chose this place because they are pet-friendly and provided amenities for pets. I already knew what the hotel looked like before we arrived, so I wasn't surprised at how dated the outside looked. It is renovated on the inside and felt very warm and inviting.

We stayed in a room facing the parking lot, on the right side of the hotel. We didn't mind our room. The bathroom was a little on the small side, but no big deal. The bed was comfy and the decor was nice. They knew we were bringing our puppy, so there was a water and food dish, a dog bed, and towel for her. That was very nice. They put all dog owners on the first floor so it is easy to take the dog outside.

We went into town for an hour or so and got a call from the front desk saying that our dog was barking. We didn't leave in the middle of our dinner, but came back a little faster than we originally were. The reason she was barking is because the right side of the hotel, on the first floor, is where the restaurant is, and it is very busy with people walking by all the time. She heard all of these people walking around and talking and it got her interested. One thing I will say is that you need to BRING EARPLUGS if you are easily woken up in the night. There was a wedding at the hotel this weekend and and entire bridal party was above our room being loud and playing music until 2 in the morning. The walls are very thin, and we could hear every single word they were saying as if they were in our room. I didn't say anything that night to the front desk because I understand that they're just having fun, I would've just rather it not be above my room.

The next morning, I asked the front if we could switch rooms and they did right away. This time to the other side of the hotel, first floor, and we had our own door that went out on to the porch and grassy area. It was awesome! Definitely an upgrade from what we had. If you are coming with an animal, make sure you request a room on the highway side of the hotel, and on the left side as well, as it is MUCH quieter. It was so wonderful having the door to go directly outside from our room, our dog appreciated it i'm sure =) Also WHAT A VIEW!! It was such a stunning view and so great to wake up to.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. It didn't start off so well, but it ended up pretty great. The staff was nice, most of them you can tell really like dogs and were happy to come and pet and love our dog. The room was clean and spacious (our second room). Don't stay at this hotel if you don't have a car and want to go into Banff, as it is not directly in town, but still very close driving distance. The walls are thin, so keep that in mind, also, on the highway side of the hotel (the one with the amazing view), the noise from the highway can be a nuisance to some. It didn't bother us one bit, since we live on a busy street and have bus stops next to our house. The restaurant was okay, we only had breakfast there once. The service was a little slow, but no big deal. I had the Organic Whole Wheat Flax Seed Pancakes, very good! Very filling. My husband loved his omelette. Anyways, it was an enjoyable stay once we were in the second room, and we will return again when we go to Banff and happen to have our puppy with us!

We had a "Weekend Box" given to us for Christmas last year, which included a one night stay (there were various "luxury" hotels across Canada to choose from) and other add-ons. We chose the Juniper, and the package included one night in a room with a view of Mount Norquay, admission to the Banff Hot Springs, a chocolate lovers platter, and a full service a-la-carte breakfast.

Regarding that package -->
The hotel as described: I would hardly call it "luxury", but it was still great .
Room with a view of Mt Norquay: We didn't really have much of a view - we could see the parking lot, trees, and like other people said, we were so close to the mountain we couldn't see much of it. This wasn't a huge deal to us, as we live in Calgary and have seen Banff and the mountains a lot in our lifetime, plus a view of trees is still nice.
Free Breakfast: Exactly as described, no hidden fees. The breakfast was delicious. I have many allergies (including eggs) which makes breakfast difficult, but they were still accomodating.
Admission to Banff Hot Springs: Self explanatory :)
Chocolate Lovers Platter: I would hardly call it a platter... it was a small chocolate oriented dessert for one (which was fine, due to my allergies I couldn't eat it anyhow). My boyfriend quite enjoyed it though.

Regarding the hotel -->
Location: It is located on the other side of the highway from Banff, which is good and bad depending on what you are going for. We loved it because it felt like a getaway, you're not right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of busy main street. Some people may prefer to be right in town, but it was still only a 2 minute drive tops.

From the outside, it looks ghetto. We were worried when we first pulled up. In their defense, we saw some construction / paint work being done while we were there, so I am sure they are in the process of fixing it up.

The inside is cozy - very nice lobby. Staff was friendly at check-in and check-out, and room service was quick. The outdoor hot tub is good, not very big but it was never busy.

One odd thing was that when we first entered our room, there was a bottle of Shiraz. We were thrilled and went to open it, when we realized there was a note - the Shiraz wasn't for us, it was for a guest at a wedding which was taking place at the Juniper that weekend! Oops. Good thing we didn't open it. We called room service to pick it up so it could be delivered to it's rightful owner, but it wasn't very nice to tease us that way!

The room itself was small but clean, and the bathroom was nice. I think they are going for the "cozy mountain retreat" feel. It works, we definitely left feeling relaxed! There was a mini fridge in the room but no safe. Luckily we were just staying for one night and didn't really need a safe, but it would be nice to have for a longer stay. The beds were a bit hard for our liking.

The Bistro is amazing - we had a fantastically delcious dinner there. I cannnot remember what our appetizer was called, but it was a mountain style platter of sorts - it had bite size portions of cheese, elk, bison, and other such things (very tasty). We both had a seafood dish for our main course (which was very delicious). The seafood was delivered fresh from Vancouver Island.

I booked this hotel as part of our honeymoon for one night only. It was an average price with some decent reviews so decided to give it a go. On check in the staff were reasonably friendly if not a little distant. However, once we saw our room we were not happy. The room itself was okay, but the 'Mountain View' we had been sold was not what I would call a great view (all you could see where trees as we were so close to the mountain). Anyway, this wasn't a major issue for us, the problem was the location of the room. It was located at the top of the stairs just near the main reception. I was sitting at the desk about 20mins after check in and as someone walked up the stairs, my glass of water was literally shaking (like that scene in Jurassic Park). It was incredibly loud and I knew it would become a very big annoyance later that night. Also, the main vent for the whole floor's air conditioning went above our room and was loud all of the time.

After a bit of a chat we decided to ask to be moved. They agreed to move us but as they didn't have any equivelant rooms, they would upgrade us for no charge to a King Suite. The difference was unbelievable. The room was still a little loud due to a group of people deciding to have a 45minute conversation in the corridor at midnight, but that's hardly the Hotels fault. The view was simply stunning (photo attached) and we decided to get up early and watch the sun rise from our patio.

The room was clean and amenities were good. We didn't try the restaurant or hot tub so can't comment.

Overall I would recommend staying here, but go for a King Suite. Oh, and if you are not happy with your room, it doesn't hurt to complain.

My husband, adult daughter and I recently stayed at the Juniper and loved it. We had a two bedroom room, one with two queen beds, the other with one queen bed. We stayed for three nights while we explored the delights of Banff National Park. It was lovely and quiet, being just out of town. The rooms were spacious and clean. The only negatives were the patchy wifi internet service and the fact that there is no lift to the second floor, which makes it a bit hard when lugging heaving suitcases. Apart from that we loved it and would be happy to stay there again.

Stay at the Juniper last weekend with friends and had an enjoyable stay. It was booked through Priceline.com and so it's a great value for Banff.

Pros:
-lots of free parking
-rooms are clean and decor is nice
-beds (we had two double beds) where clean and comfortable, blankets and pillows were just right.
-staff is helpful (upon check-in provided info and hours for hot tub, restaurants, reception. called for extra towels and soap, which was promptly delivered to the room)
-uses Bee Kind products for shampoo, lotion, soap, etc which is a nice product (organic and environmental friendly)

Cons:
-Not located within the Banff townsite which means you have to drive (you'll probably have a car anyways but it's nice to be able to walk to dinner in the town as well). It's on the other side of the highway (hwy 1) but it's easy to get to and there are signs.

-NO ELEVATOR this was ok for me and my friends but I can see this being a problem for accessibility reasons. if you can't lift your own luggage up a flight of stairs... this is not the place for you or at least ask for a room on the main floor.

Only stayed the one night so did not try the restaurants or the hot tub so can't provide info on that. Overall, a very good stay.
