“Pleasant enough hotel- a bit out of the way”
Reviewed 29 September 2010

Stayed here 2 nights as part of a tour. It is one of the farthest out of the hotels in Banff- it took us about 15 minutes to walk in. There is also a bus service running by, I think about every 30 minutes. Our room was perfectly acceptable, and very quiet, despite the proximity of the ice and cold drinks machines. It was however very dim, as we were in a corner of a courtyard which hardly got any sun. We had breakfast at the Voyager next door- we didn't have a voucher, and our meal was in a nice room, and was fine. The hotel is close to Tunnel Mountain, where we did a good walk (and saw chipmunks). We ate in a very good Korean restaurant in town. We also used the outside heated pool at the Voyager, for free,-water really warm and lovely views of the mountains-and then we ran in to use the hot tub inside!

The Spruce Grove Inn is now the Annex to the Voyager Inn next door. The Voyager provides the bar and restaurant. There are so many other places to eat and drink in Banff we did not use these facilities.
The hotel provides good sized, clean and comfortable rooms.
The reception staff were helpful.
The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the town centre where there are a great selection of bars, restaurants and shops.
If you have run out of booze, the Voyager liquor store provide the best value drinks I found in Canada.
The Old Spaghetti Factory downtown provides reasonable quality, great value meals.

My husband and I stayed at the Spruce Grove Inn, Banff, for 2 nights in September. We actually paid in advance for three nights, but bailed out a day early, and needless to say, didn't get any money back.

Having researched TripAdvisor before booking my room, I was VERY careful to note that the really, truly awful ratings for this hotel are actually for its sister hotel, the very dumpy Voyager Inn right next door. If you book a room at the Spruce Grove Inn, you better be careful to specify that you DO NOT want the Voyager Inn. But in any case, that's where the complimentary breakfast is served every morning. You have to turn in a voucher to claim that "prize", and my advice would be to skip it and eat out! (The Wild Flour Cafe on Bear Street comes to mind on.) The complimentary breakfast is served in a dark, upstairs room that is utterly charmless and very institutional looking. The fare is pathetic and not worth your time.

OK. Our room at the Spruce Grove was alright, but even though this is a new complex, the bathroom is very dated and not optimal. New hotels often separate a sink from the john/shower, but here it's all in one tiny room with barely any counter space at all for toiletries. I fantasized about hanging a shelf on the back of the bathroom door! There is no soap dish, and the sink slopes at an angle so your soap bar is constantly slipping into the sink - such a simple fix! Bring your own. Also, the tub is VERY high, so you have to step WAY up (knee to chin) to get in for a shower. I can live with that.

For folks who like to picnic or eat healthy fare in your own room, be forewarned: there is NO fridge and NO microwave in the rooms. The ice machine is on only 2 floors, and you just can't keep milk safely for several days in a cooler with ice. Bummer. That forced us to eat out or buy sandwiches.

The underground parking lot is great - BUT! - the access to it from the outside is actually highly unsafe. You have to slide your room key into a slot on the LEFT side of the driveway (to enable the car's driver to reach it). But EVERY time we were entering the garage, someone was coming out, so we'd meet head-on right in the steep driveway. Good chance for a collision right there.

Finally - there is a myth that hotels like this are booked up. I tried to book my room at the hotel's website a few weeks before arriving. I got a message saying ALL rooms were booked. So I went to TripAdvisor, punched the hotel in, got several online sites (Expedia, Hotels.com, et al) which showed any number of rooms available. I booked my room, which was subject to the hotel's cancellation policy, but had to pay in full, in advance. And the rate of $120/night was no bargain. Our room had a single window, no balcony, which leads me to believe that unless you book a large block of rooms (like if you're in a tour group), you're gonna get the one by the ice machine, noisy elevator, boiler room, etc. I bet if I'd walked in off the street and asked for a room I would've gotten a better rate!

The problem with places like the Spruce Grove Inn (located, BTW at the extreme far end of Banff Ave., far from stores) is that they survive based on the bookings provided by online sites. So huge blocks of rooms are reserved for these sites to draw in traffic. Also, the Spruce Grove Inn has NO restaurant or any amenity on the premises. Other hotels all along Banff Ave have at least one place (Chilis, a sushi bar, something) to draw people in. Banff is a stunningly beautiful place to visit - even in ceaseless, pouring rain such as we had for 2 days, but I would not stay at the Spruce Grove Inn again.

This is a fine hotel. Nothing to write home about but not bad either. It is what I would call the middle of the road. You get what you expect for the price you pay. There isn't a bargain and you’re not getting taken either. It is basic but clean. It is newer but the decor looks out-dated. It is not a room you really would want to hang out in but you don't mind staying the night.

I could go on but I think you get the point. If you are looking for a bit of a break on the cost of staying on main street Banff then this is a choice you should be OK with.
If you are looking for a little bit more, a little bit of an atmosphere that makes you think you are somewhere special then this is not for you.

The one thing of note for this hotel was that the underground parade was tall. I got my 4x4 in with room to spare and I don't fit in too many places.

We spent two nights here in May. We originally booked for the sister hotel next door, the Alberta, but due to their difficulties in accommodating a large coach party, we were asked when we checked in, would we mind moving next door. We had a very pleasant comfortable room, with a balcony at the front, overlooking the mountains . No probs at all. Breakfast was in the Alberta next door, and Continental style, fairly good choices, and adequate for our needs, ( Included fresh fruit and yoghurt .)
Good customer relations, pleasant and helpful staff, secure parking for our car beneath the hotel. Liquor store next door!!
Its a brisk 20 min walk to the town centre if you don't want to drive, but plenty of eateries on the way. Try the Sushi bar on the main drag.... its superb!

We chose this hotel mostly because of the price of the room. Once we got there, so worth it! We ended up staying an extra night. The staff were friendly and accomodating. The room was a nice size but the view from the balcony was amazing. We had thunderstorms both nights, but we could leave the door open and listen since the balcony had a roof. That was a wonderful sound to hear the thunder echo at the base of mountain!

This hotel was booked for us as part of a tour. Although it is one of the furthest hotels from the centre of Banff we didn't mind too much as we enjoy walking and there is a bus stop close by. The room was fine - reasonably clean and comfortable - and the parking was easy in a car park with card access under the hotel.

We were given breakfast vouchers and duly made our way to the restaurant in the hotel next door for our breakfast. We were told that we were not eligible to use the restaurant and our breakfast room was upstairs (no elevator). We were horrified when we walked in - a few tables in a large room with loaves of bread for us to toast next to open bins, and awful coffee.

Our friend is disabled and she had to go in the kitchen elevator, through the kitchen to get to the breakfast room. It was most unpleasant....sometimes it is better not to know!
Our friends compained and refused to do this again the following morning, so in the end we were allowed to eat in the decent restaurant downstairs where the waiter was exceptionally nice and helpful and we had an excellent continental breakfast for the next two mornings. Otherwise we would have sent the vouchers back to our holiday agent and had breakfast in Banff.

On returning from a trip out for the day we arrived back to find the door of our room had been left wide open - presumably by housekeeping staff. Fortunately all our belongings were still there but it could have runied our holiday. The receptionist apologised and said she would 'have a word' with the housekeeping staff.

This is potentially a really nice hotel let down by poor management.
