I stayed here one night. As I was arriving late in the evening via the Banff Airporter, I was told that the Spruce Grove Inn reception would be closed and I would have to check in at the sister Voyager Inn and walk through the connection to get to the Spruce Grove rooms. (I was told that the Spruce Grove was the updated property and the Voyager the older one, but they were sister hotels.)

I didn't have any luggage on me (airline lost it) -- which was a good thing. The trek to the adjoining Spruce Grove required navigating a steep set of carpeted stairs (downward there, at least). It was a bit of a hike, but not by, say, Las Vegas hotel standards.

The night reception fellow was extremely personable and kind.

If the Spruce Grove represents the updated property, then either it had only been updated 20 years ago or their interior decorator is truly "old school". There is nothing remarkable, nor is there nothing overly negative, about the decor here. It is as bland as any Motel 6.

The room was freezing when I arrived; it took a good half hour before the temperature got up to speed.

Free wireless was a nice perk. And free local calls were appreciated.

The "free" breakfast was not particularly tasty and the coffee was bad -- even with heaps of sugar. But it was "free" so what do you expect. At least you had the option of upgrading or ordering something else off the menu. The waiter was nice.

All in all, a bland stay. I wouldn't recommend this property if you want downtown Banff at your doorstep (it is a bit of a walk into town, but do-able if you have the energy). But, considering how expensive Banff hotels generally are, you could do worse. Just don't expect deluxe accommodations.

We stayed here for 5 nights during our stay in the Rockies and based our choice on the price and location of the hotel. The room was large, comfortable and clean but quite basic and there was a faint smell of stale smoke. The railway line is fairly close to the hotel and on a couple of occasions we could hear the freight trains at 3am. The hotel was rebuilt in 2002 but the decor was quite dated. The hotel doesn't have many facilities but that was fine, as we were out all day and spent very little time in the hotel. The reception area had many leaflets about the local attractions, which was useful in helping us plan our itineries. We had breakfast vouchers, but we had previously read poor reviews about the breakfasts so we didn't use them and chose to have breakfast at Melissa's and Coyotes instead. There was a 10 minute walk into the centre of Banff. This wasn't a problem for us as it was a pleasant walk, and we even saw some deer on a couple of occasions when walking to and from the hotel. We used the free underground car park and had no problems in finding a parking space. If you are looking for no frills accommodation when you are exploring the Rockies then I would suggest you consider this hotel.

I booked this online because of the price. Photos looked okay, but should have checked the other reviews. Very dissapointed in our stay. The front desk addressed our issue with the defective sofa bed. The toilet ran loudly every five minutes, even with the bathroom door closed. Ice machine outside our room was used often during the night by other guests and heard the machine draining constantly. Hallways were noisy. Worst of all was the smell of the carpet! Made me ill. Filled out a comment card and handed it in upon checkout. Voiced my concerns again, but no discount was given. Next time I'll pay more and stay closer to the town center.

The main advantage of this hotel are its relative affordability, which can be difficult to find in Banff. The hotel provides a comfortable bed, a clean smallish room, a private balcony and good underground parking. It's connected by a tunnel to its sister hotel, the Voyager, which is where any additional amenities are located. These include a restaurant and liquor store, and a hot tub and outdoor pool. It was a real treat to swim in the outdoor pool in October and to hear that it's open year round because they heat it. On a beautiful October weekend it was a pleasure to have the ten minute walk to downtown Banff, and to be away from the crowds but I might feel differently in winter.

We were upgraded from the Voyager Inn into this (connecting) sisterhotel. The rooms are very (!) spacious and hotel was quiet. The reception was manned limited hours (be directed to Voyager inn otherwise). The beds were not that good. The WiFi was excellent. Bathroom was clean and rather roomy and double sink and countertops. The only thing with this hotel is that it is not cozy (high ceiling, cold light, white walls). It doesn;t feel like a cozy room.

Skip the (free) breakfast. It is not good (limited choice: white/wholeheat bread, two types of dry muffins, cereal and (a plus) small cups of yoghurt, coffee and tea). You can order additional hot breakfast (which we did not). Pool, Sauna, hot tub and breakfast was served in Voyager in. A definite plus is the underground parking lot!!

We have stayed at the Mount Royal hotel as well. If you need Wifi, good parking, roomy bathroom go for this hotel. If location and cozy feeling is more important: choose Mount Royal.

Stayed here 2 nights as part of a tour. It is one of the farthest out of the hotels in Banff- it took us about 15 minutes to walk in. There is also a bus service running by, I think about every 30 minutes. Our room was perfectly acceptable, and very quiet, despite the proximity of the ice and cold drinks machines. It was however very dim, as we were in a corner of a courtyard which hardly got any sun. We had breakfast at the Voyager next door- we didn't have a voucher, and our meal was in a nice room, and was fine. The hotel is close to Tunnel Mountain, where we did a good walk (and saw chipmunks). We ate in a very good Korean restaurant in town. We also used the outside heated pool at the Voyager, for free,-water really warm and lovely views of the mountains-and then we ran in to use the hot tub inside!

The Spruce Grove Inn is now the Annex to the Voyager Inn next door. The Voyager provides the bar and restaurant. There are so many other places to eat and drink in Banff we did not use these facilities.
The hotel provides good sized, clean and comfortable rooms.
The reception staff were helpful.
The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the town centre where there are a great selection of bars, restaurants and shops.
If you have run out of booze, the Voyager liquor store provide the best value drinks I found in Canada.
The Old Spaghetti Factory downtown provides reasonable quality, great value meals.
