The sushi here was delicious although we ended up spending more than we had anticipated but it was well worth it. Our server was very friendly, highly amusing, and obliged us by taking pictures every time she saw we were trying to do so. She was very informative and helpful. We will happily go back!

Thank Vicki P

We love Japanese food and always check out local Japanese restaurants when traveling. The food at Samurai was excellent, and we really enjoyed the shabu-shabu hot pot experience. Our server was warm and personable, and our dishes served quickly, one after another.

Shabu Shabu is a Japanese cuisine that my wife and I really enjoy. Recently we were in Banff and were pleased that this was on the menu of Samurai, a Japanese restaurant located in the stunningly beautiful Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. While the price was somewhat steep for outside of Tokyo, our hunger won the debate and reservations were made.

The location of the restaurant in the hotel seemed to be an after-thought, perhaps added to meet the demand of the growing number of Asian visitors to the hotel. The space was fairly small and perhaps not overly attractive, other than the sushi bar in a separate room that looked warm and inviting.

When checking in the host indicated that they had a special tonight on Shabu Shabu. Yes? Please tell us more. At a nice discount off the Shabu Shabu menu price we had soup, steamed rice, a variety of sushi, a variety of tempura and of course the main star Shabu Shabu.

This turned out to be a very enjoyable dinner. The sushi was excellent and we understood that it is flown in from Vancouver. The tempura was fairly typical and included a nice variety from shrimp to vegetables. The Shabu Shabu was also excellent although I think the broth was somewhat weak and could have used a little more sizzle. I found myself using salt on the meat, something I have never done previously in a Japanese restaurant.

The lady server we had that evening was excellent. She was both friendly and professional and she made sure that our evening was enjoyable.

We went there considering the great review we saw, but the place is not that nice. The decor is slightly nicer than a quick sit and go restaurant.

We ordered the party boat, and most of the sushi were the tiny little ones with a small piece of fish, cucumber.... it was really not worth it. It was probably worst than what you can find at airports. Perhaps the a la carte would have been better. The pieces of fish for the sushi were so thin... really sad.

For the price it was not worth it. I would not recommend this place.

Since we had a very lovely lunch outside on the patio of the hotel we decided to go back in the evening for diner to the hotel. Samurai was our choice since we love sushi and tried it all over the world. The atmosphere is not like the rest of this special hotel. Waiter came to our table and didn't have a friendly attitude. We orderers a few things and some were quit good, others were not. Edamame was not even salted. Tuna tataki was good. Waiter didn't bring water, we had to ask for and never asked if we wanted another drink.Every time we had to ask to order something. He was just not in the mood of working tonight. Our mains were quite good. Too bad for such an amazing hotel that they don't look better after this restaurant
