“Eden Ruined by Tour Groups”
Reviewed 29 May 2012

Stunning facility and location. The service was good and bad particularly in the food service area. The only time the hotel was pleasant was between check out and check in of tour groups otherwise it was constant competition for everything. This is an expensive destination, very nice rooms. They do have an elite floor where you may escape some of the tour madness but I did not stay there.

Again, we were absolutely stunned by the beauty of this historic location!
Our 2 night stay was in late May, and the lake was still partially frozen but still
the lake and moutain views were unbelievable. Our corner room afforded
us outstanding scenic beauty of both the mountains and the lake. The shoreline
walk made for some spectacular photos.
This property also offers a 24 hour Chateau Deli with a broad selection of delicious breakfast and lunch items to chose from, for take away or eat in a small dining area .
The restaurants were quite expensive, but we found the Walliser Stube lounge perfect for
2 glasses of wine and a shared cheese/meat plate appetizer.
Our second night we dined at the Glacier Saloon. There was a 20 minute wait to be seated; but we found our request for a window table, happily accomodated. The entree choices were varied and we chose to share the tomato goat cheese flat bread appetizer, and the Wild Game Fettuccini Bolognese .Both were absolutely delicious! The Service and Views were equally outstanding!

Room Tip: Request a lakeview room no matter the cost!

Truly a stunning location with spectacular views worth the extra price for the lakeview rooms. That being said, when measured against comparable hotels that charge similar rates, the total experience comes up a little short. Overall, the service was competent but nothing special. The Chateau should think about stepping it up a bit as its competition has already done so. Granted, we only stayed in a deluxe lakeview room. We were not on the gold floor. However, for the price of even the basic level of room in this hotel, I have received more luxurious amenities in other comparable hotels. For starters, the room decor is getting a little dated and needs freshening up. Robes and slippers are provided but they were pretty basic. The bathroom was a good size and quite nice but we needed those robes and slippers as it was freezing cold. Towels were very small and sparse. Basic coffee maker is provided, not the Nespresso that we are finding in similarily priced hotels. Even then, they did not replace the coffee we used or the wine glass that broke. As I am a President Club Member, I received a newspaper and free wifi. It's a good thing the wifi was free as it was down for one entire day and for several hours almost every other day. There is only one paper available and no paper on Sunday. $35 per day for valet parking is quite steep (that is not including tip). Soup and a pre-made sandwich in cellophane from the take out counter was a stunning $18. Otherwise, food at the restaurants on site was very good and the bed was very comfortable.

Keep in mind that this hotel is a destination itself. On weekends, hoards of people flock to the site just to see the lake so unless you get up early, there is quite a traffic jam on the lake walk which can detract from the experience.

Come for the view and the walk around the lake, but unless you spring for a gold level room, do not expect the royal treatment that you should receive for the price being charged at this property.

Thank you for your recent review. I'm pleased that you enjoyed the lakeview and that you found your room comfortable. Please know that beginning in the fall of this year, we will begin renovations on the majority of the hotel, including all guest rooms in the historic wings, which will offer a more luxurious feel for our guests. We will also be adding Keurig coffee machines to all guest rooms in the near future, with Nespresso machines already installed in Fairmont Gold guest rooms.

Warm Regards,

My husband and I stayed here for one night in May.
I read the review of this hotel and we booked a lake side view room. It's pricy but worth the price. View from the room was so beautiful.
If you stay this hotel, you should pay extra to get a lake side view room.

We stayed on gold floor. We loved the room. Both room and bathrooms were spacious and clean.
You can get juices, pops, and water from lounge and free breakfast is included.

We really liked this hotel and we would love to go back again when lake is not frozen.

Stayed in every 5 sat hotel in Banff now & planning on moving there in the not so distant future. This is definitely the nicest, everything about it is just amazing, literally just like something off a film. Being able to go walk on the lake when it's froze over is amazing. The views are something else. Once in. Lifetime opportunity I heavily recommend. Only issue is, it's miles away from anywhere, however, this is a selling point for most people. Staff incredible (as everywhere in Canada) & rooms unbelievable. Highly recommend the breakfast bar downstairs too, by Canada prices it was actually cheap!
