“A great place”
Reviewed 16 August 2010

As all the guidebooks say, this place is a gem of a hostel. And given that most of the rest of the hotels in Lake Louise are hugely overpriced (e.g. the next door Post) this is also one of the best value options in town, even with a private room (ours was actually just a dorm room for four with two bunk-beds that they only put two of us in, which wasn't what I was expecting). Friendly staff, a good little diner (even if service can be a bit slow), internet access, helpful message board, and even a sauna! Everything else (food, park fees, memorabilia) in Banff and Lake Louise is going to set you back a pretty penny, so here's a place to make a little back up.

We stayed at the hostel over a long weekend. We were there mainly to hike, and the hostel was in a perfect location and price range to do this. One of the best hostels we have stayed in. We stayed in a very comfortable private room. The cafe onsite has great food and is well priced. This was important as there are not a lot of restaurant/cafe options in the Lake Louise village. The only negative comment is that it was quite noisy and we didn't sleep well during our stay. The noise was mainly trains going past during the night and banging doors. It is not a rowdy hostel and most of the other patrons were also there to hike and do outdoor activities. I would stay here again, but take ear plugs for sure!

5 star hostel! We had a double bed in a 6 bed dorm that was on a mezzanine level of it's own. Plenty of space with a toilet & basin for our room to share (showers were shared with other dorms and very clean). Huge lockup cupboards for our gear including tall lockers downstairs to put our boarding gear. Great kitchen facilities, free fast wifi and a pool table with an open fire to keep you toasty. Loads of info for anything you needed.

The cafe onsite had the best meals at a reasonable price (for Lake Louise!) and the staff were extremely helpful, allowing me to scan and sign documents I needed to get back home.

What more can you ask for?! This place is better than a lot of hotels we've stayed in!

I have to be honest and say, I wasn't that taken with Lake Louise itself. Although what a place to grab a coffee and just people watch!! But of course, it's all in the Canadian Rockies, which are just blow your mind stunning full stop.

That said, the HI hostel there is a real flagship to the hosteling world. Of course it had all the basics, but it also has a great restaurant/bar, and a social area for you to enjoy your beer in that will make you wish you'd packed your slippers! Ok, well maybe the slippers thing is just me, but when you see it you'll know what I mean. Enjoy!

I have stayed at the HI lake louise on many occasions, more recently booking a private room for me and my mother travelling around Alberta and BC. We booked a private room which turned out to have a double bed with single bed bunk so we had a bed each which was much more comfortable and a good night sleep. Very clean rooms and washrooms near the room. Kitchen was very good too. We were in the second building seperate from frontdesk and restaurant.

I have stayed previosly in the dorm rooms in the other building, one night being very quiet i had a dorm to myself and other nights I have shared. Dorms also very clean, duvet rather than blankets. And a washroom (toilet/sink) within room and shower across teh hall. The kitchen in this building is also very spacious. There is also a sauna, ski lockers and tv room and laundry in the basement and a huge lounge upstairs.

I used the restauraunt on previous ocasaions (this time we cooked), but i found the service good, at breakfast and at dinner and its a nice cozy chilled out atmosphere. Plenty of parking with power points for the cold winter months.

It’s not every day you get to write a hugely positive review, but luckily enough we visited this hostel and were hugely impressed.
Lake Louise is a small idyllic town in the Canadian Rockies, and the lodges and hotels are hugely expensive! On booking at the HI Lake Louise we were a little put off because the prices were much higher than that of any other HI in Canada (except maybe Whistler). Upon arrival via Greyhound we caught a Taxi to the HI (note – it’s a very short woodland walk from the shops/bus stop to the hostel – something we didn’t know!) and it is 2 beautiful wooded buildings right in the heart of the village.
Although the costs were high it is definitely the cheapest in the area and best choice we made. We stayed 3 nights in a private room which was a little small but the setting makes up for the $100 a night price tag. With a lovely backyard wooded area, in the winter full of snow and a walkway (as mentioned earlier) to the shops.
The Hostel has a games room, lovely cafe/restaurant with good cheap food, projector TV room, free Wireless internet and huge kitchen areas. Access to Lake Louise Ski shuttle is just across the road and they sell passes at reception at discounted rates. The Hostel also offers a repair shop in the basements where you can service your Skis/Board – very cool!
We took a weekend trip to Revelstoke from Lake Louise and they let us keep our excess baggage in the hostel lockers for free – all you need is a padlock. That was a pleasant surprise. We returned to the HI a couple of days later and did the Glacier walk behind the Fairmont (hugely recommended). The walk from the Fairmont to the HI (also recommended) is a good hour hike downhill – we opted for a taxi up there (uphill) which was $8 each. This time we stayed in a shared room and again although a little small it was perfect for what we wanted.
Be warned the price of buy your own food in Lake Louise its hugely expensive – it’s nearly cheaper to eat at the café onsite.
All in all the most idyllic location and probably the best hostel I have been to in Canada regardless of the money spent!

We only stayed here one night, driving back from jasper to banff. We paid $110 ca, for a twin room with shared bathroom. Reception and staff were fine, the restaurant was good for both dinner and breakfast. We did not try the kitchen or TV room. The setting is very nice but the actual building is old and needs upgrading, just basic timber construction and very noisy with banging doors etc. The bed was basic and comfortable enough, shared bathroom was not as much of a problem as it could have been. There was a newer section adjacent to the main building but nor sure if this was just dorms.

I would not stay there again, the Banff hostel was much nicer, but for the price we paid and convenience it was ok. There is not a lot of choice in this area and B + B's did not want to take a one night booking.
