Num-Ti-Jah Lodge
Reviewed 5 August 2006

This is an authentic "destination" mountain lodge, and a rather old one at that. The Num-Ti-Jah itself, and not just the spectacular Bow Lake and Crowfoot Glacier setting warrants a visit, for at least 2 nights. This is a very special place of great natural beauty. The setting is inspiring, and the lodge itself--although the epitome of “rustic”--is really very warm and comfortable. The room we had was quite large. Ours had an in-suite washroom, but while most visitors will want this feature, be advised it is exceedingly small. The only real disappointment was the evening dining. While the breakfast buffet was substantial and a reasonable value, the evening dining experience was decidedly too "California" for us. If paying high prices for distressingly small but "pretty" portions (as little as 4 ounces of meat coupled with perhaps 1 ounce of risotto and 5 tiny green beans) is your idea of “fine dining,” you will be well-served. The quality of the food was quite good, but the quantity is simply inadequate--particularly if you are a man who has worked up an appetite hiking the many neighboring trails. One man dining at the table next to us commented that his dessert was “all plate.” In truth, this extraordinary lodge is so remote there are no alternatives for dinner. Still, despite the quibble about the Canadian food practices (sadly, not uncommon in the mountain parks), I highly recommend this lodge as a truly memorable destination. The congenial social gatherings near the large fireplace after dinner are what you go for, anyway.
